IBM 4704 FINANCE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM DISPLAY STATION MODEL 2 Announcement Letter Number 183-008 dated February 1, 1983 US - Last Revised on February 1, 1983 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability Customer Letter Section IBM 4704 FINANCE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM DISPLAY STATION MODEL 2 The 4704 Model 2 is a modular, user-configurable 9" CRT display and keyboard station for input and output in interactive banking and administrative applications. It offers flexibility in work station layout and configurations, and can be tailored to meet the needs of various platform and administrative applications. The 4704 Model 2 attaches to the IBM 4701 Finance Communication System Controller via the optional Device Cluster Adapter (DCA). Highlights . Similar in appearance to the 4704 Model 1. . The display module contains the logic and power necessary to drive the integrated CRT plus keyboards, optional magnetics, and PIN keypad devices. . Two means of operation: 1) key tracking in the controller or 2) locally in the 4704 Model 2. . Local keyboard tracking and cursor controls can relieve the load on the controller. . Displays, under program control, either 1,920 characters (24 lines of 80) or 480 characters (12 lines of 40). . Status information is displayed at the bottom of the screen. . Support of alerts via Communications Network Management. . 3278 Model 2 compatibility on the 4701 DCA. . 3604 and 4704 Model 1 application code can be migrated to the 4704 Model 2 when key tracking is performed in the 4701 controller. Magnetic stripe reader/encoder and PIN keypad support is provided. . Screen editing controls such as clear, erase input, and erase field are self-contained. . Choice of anti-glare filters which provide yellow characters on brown background or bright green characters on dark green background. . Additional standard display functions included: - Upper and lower case characters - Normal or high intensity - Adjustable brightness and contrast - Audible alarm - 7 X 9 dot matrix - Operator selectable cursor . Four different keyboards are available to meet a variety of user requirements. These are 50-key function, 62-key alphameric, 77-key extended alphameric, and the 107-key administrative keyboard. . Attaches magnetic stripe reader or reader/encoder. . Attaches a nonencrypting or encrypting PIN keypad. New features . Attachment is via coax cable to optional DCA feature in the 4701 controller. . The 107-key administrative keyboard contains 62 alphameric keys, 15 predefined control keys, and 30 user definable function keys. The 15 predefined control keys include the following functions: clear, erase input, erase field, dup, field mark, insert, delete, and cursor movements. The 30 user-definable keys may be labeled as needed and the labels then protected by a transparent key cap. . Self-contained key tracking relieves the controller from the necessity of processing each individual keystroke as entered by the operator. The alphameric keys, cursor control keys, erase keys, insert, and delete require no controller action as they are processed entirely within the display. The controller is only involved if data or status information requires processing, such as when end-of-message keys, program function keys, or attention keys are pressed. Programming support: The 4704 Model 2 can be programmed to operate in two ways: 1) with key tracking in the controller or 2) locally within the 4704 Model 2. Application programs developed for the 3278 Model 2, the 3604 Models 3 and 7, or the 4704 Model 1 can operate unchanged with the 4704 Model 2 when key tracking is performed in the controller. In addition, application programs written for the 3604 Models 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 will operate although modifications may be necessary. Magnetic stripe reader/encoder and PIN keypad support is provided. Minor modifications are required to the configuration definition (CPGEN) to include the 4704 Model 2. To take advantage of the advanced capability afforded by local key tracking, the application programs need to be modified. See IBM Product Announcements dated June 22, 1982 (4701 Model 2) and September 14, 1981 for details of controller data support. See IBM Programming Announcement dated July 30, 1983 for host support details. First customer shipment: First customer shipments (general availability) of the 4704 Model 2 are planned for December 1983. Security, auditability, and control: User management is responsible for evaluating, selecting, applying, and implementing the security and auditability features of the 4700 and the System/370, 303X, 308X, or 4300 processors, and for the appropriate administrative and application controls. Volume purchase price reduction: Machines in the 4700 Finance Communication System qualify for a purchase price reduction for volume orders.
