IBM 5080 GRAPHICS SYSTEM FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE CAD/CAM, DATA, AND ENGINEERING/SCIENTIFIC GRAPHICS Contents Announcement Letter Number 183-145 dated November 1, 1983 US - Last Revised on November 1, 1983 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability Customer Letter Section The IBM 5080 Graphics System combines high performance, high user-interaction capabilities, and powerful graphics functions in an application-supported, ergonomically advanced graphics workstation designed for placement in a normal office environment. A choice of color or monochrome high resolution raster displays, a range of distributed graphics functions, and a selection of graphics input and output devices are offered. The 5080 Graphics System announcement is made up of the following components: . The 5081 Display (available in color and monochrome models) . The 5083 Tablet . The 5085 Graphics Processor . The 5088 Graphics Channel Controller The 5080 Graphics System is supported by the IBM Graphics Access Method System Product (GAM/SP), GAM, and application software of CADAM*, CATIA**, CAEDS***, and CBDS2. * CADAM is a registered trademark of CADAM, INC. ** CATIA is a registered trademark of Dassault Systemes *** CAEDS is a trademark of Structural Dynamics Research Corporation The IBM 5080 Graphics System integrates a high-performance and highly user-interactive display with powerful graphics functions. The ergonomically advanced graphics workstation is designed for placement in an office environment. The IBM 5080 Graphics System features include over one megabyte of system memory, up to 256 colors or gray shades, and a 2-D/3-D transformation and clipping feature. System/370/43XX/30XX host systems attachment with enhanced GAM/SP support (Release 2) under VM/SP, MVS/370, and MVS/XA operating systems is provided. Currently available IBM Graphics Access Method software will support the 5080 Graphics System using 3250 compatible orders under MVS/370, MVS/XA, VM/SP, and VS1 for operation with IBM and user-written applications. The IBM 5080 Graphics System is compatible with the IBM 3250 Graphics Display System. (See Compatibility section.) CADAM, CATIA, CAEDS, and CBDS2 support the IBM 5080 Graphics System. This set of IBM CAD/CAM application products provides an effective means to utilize computer capabilities in mechanical and electrical drafting, design, analysis, and manufacturing. Use of these products can increase productivity by shortening the time from design through manufacture, permit better designs with greater accuracy, and provide improved engineering change control. See availability notices for specified operating environments. Highlights . High performance graphics functions: - vector drawing - polygon area fill - 2-D/3-D coordinate transformation and clipping - picking - circle generation - character and line generation (fixed and programmable). . High resolution, 1024 by 1024 pixel-formatted displays in both color and monochrome, which may support simultaneous displays of up to 256 colors from a range of 4,096 or 256 gray shades. . Consistent high quality images independent of screen content support prolonged use with minimum user fatigue. . Ergonomic design for placement in normal office environments - the 5080 workstation units are attractive, compact, and easily installed. . 3250 compatibility. (See Compatibility section.) . Easy migration of applications and devices through the intermixing of IBM 5080 Graphics System and 3250 configurations. . 3270 feature (optional feature #5510) allows both the graphics and the 3270 applications to be concurrently active and alternately displayable. Logon and logoff actions are not required once the sessions have been activated. This feature is supported using a TP SNA/SDLC attachment. . High speed data transmission of up to 2.5 megabytes per second between the IBM 5088 Graphics Channel Controller and a host channel operating in data streaming mode. Up to two megabits per second transmission between the 5088 and the 5085. . Customer setup for flexibility on the 5085, 5081, and 5083. . Automatic diagnostic checkout of the 5085 and 5088 units occurs each time they are reset or powered on. This process for a 5085 includes automatic configuring of the peripheral devices that are attached. . Industry standard optional RS232C feature (#5510) for the attachment of RS232C compatible devices. (See RS232C devices such as the IBM 7374 and 7375 Color Plotters.) Differentiate logical parts of a 2-D or 3-D mechanical model . Differentiate logical components and layers of a circuit board . Clarify the analysis of finite element models . Use of color highlighting to: - emphasize areas of current interest - clarify selectable menu options. Description Attachment of a 5088 Graphics Channel Controller Model 1 to the host system channel provides control facilities for up to 16 (32 with the 5088 Model 2) 5085 Graphics Processors with 5081 Displays and/or 3251 Displays attached through a 3255 Display Control Unit and/or an RS232C port connected device (see RS232C devices section). An interactive workstation consists of a 5085 Graphics Processor and a 5081 Display. Peripheral features (e.g., the alphameric keyboard or 5083 Tablet) connect through the base of the 5081 Display into the 5085 Graphics Processor. Peripheral options: Tablet, lighted program function keys, dials, keyboards. The 5085 Graphics Processor permits the concurrent attachment of a color and a monochrome model of the 5081 Display. Additional displays may be cable-connected from either display connected to the 5085. These displays must be the same model as the display to which they are cabled. Any and all displays attached to a single 5085 show the same picture. The IBM 5081 Display: The display is the main interactive vehicle for the user. Picture quality, display appearance, and human factors have each received extensive development attention. The display has the following characteristics: . Clear, comfortable view of the screen enhanced by an anti-reflective treatment in both the color and the monochrome models. . Contrast enhanced by a special filter additive in the glass of the display. . A 19-inch diagonal screen with a 1024 by 1024 pixel array displayed on an area approximately 284 mm/11.2 inches by 284 mm/11.2 inches. . Sharp, precise images due to a small pixel spot size in both the color and the monochrome models. . Steady, bright image using special phosphors uniquely adapted to a 50Hz non-interlaced refresh rate. . Display controls for coarse convergence adjustment (color display only), picture centering, contrast and brightness, and four indicators for fault isolation are conveniently located at the front base of the display, behind a flip-down panel. . Compact dimensions - 490 mm/19.29 inches high, 490 mm/19.29 inches wide, and 553 mm/21.77 inches deep. . Convenient tilt and swivel mechanism for user selection of the most comfortable viewing position - standard in the 5081 Display. . RS343 attachment for the cable connection of an additional 5081 of the same model number. All 5081 Displays connected in this way display the same picture. . Up to 256 simultaneously displayable gray shades (5081 Model 1) or up to 256 colors (5081 Model 2) from a range of 4,096 colors. . Attachment of peripherals via convenient plug-in connections located beneath the display at the front of the tilt-swivel base; the plug-in connections attach to the 5085 Graphics Processor via a single cable. The IBM 5085 Graphics Processor: The 5085 has a comprehensive graphics architecture that includes the 3250 Graphics Display System compatibility. The 5085 provides a powerful graphics order set with more than 75 orders. The 5085 controls the workstation's display list buffers, concurrent graphics and 3270 data mode sessions, peripheral device attachments, RS232C attachment, and display functions. It may contain up to 1.1 megabytes of system memory. A workstation is a 5085 with one or more 5081 Displays; all displays show the same picture. IBM 5085 Graphics Processor Performance: The new 5080 orders, in combination with the increased amount of 5080 system memory available to the user and microprocessor graphics functions in the processor, enables an application to significantly offload host processing. The 5085 Graphics Processor uses multiple processors and specially designed hardware to achieve the following performance characteristics: . Hardware generated high speed vector to raster conversion: - The pixel generator writes pixels in any direction at the rate of 100 nanoseconds per pixel. Actual drawing time varies based on the graphic order used and system variables such as dynamic RAM refresh time. - Horizontal pixel write speeds in certain area fill operations may be accomplished at faster rates. . High speed fixed character generator using separate, dedicated, high performance memory. . Separate microprocessor to handle data transfers between the 5085 and 5088 at the high rate of two megabits/seconds. Other microprocessors in the 5085 may perform parallel processing of display list and peripheral device control. . High speed display list order processing is provided by a 16-bit bit-sliced processor. . High speed transformations (scaling, rotating, and translation) with coordinate clipping of two and three dimensional objects with the optional transformation and clipping feature (#1021). This feature may offload the host by permitting image manipulations and successive transformations in the 5085. . Calculation capabilities of arithmetic operations, including sine and cosine, along with stacking and concatenation of transformation matrices. . Separate microprocessor supplied with the optional 3270 and RS232C Attachment feature (#5510) to permit 3270 processing in parallel with all other operations. . Additional 192K memory included with the optional 3270 and RS232C Attachment feature (#5510) (used for the 3270 and RS232C microcode and communication for the RS232C ports). . Optional peripheral I/O units contain microprocessors that offload the 5085 and provide diagnostic functions. 5085 Graphics Processor functional capabilities: A single model of the 5085 is available which has: . Compact size (590 mm/23.2" high by 320 mm/12.6" wide, by 568 mm/22.37") for convenient office placement; fits beside a desk or under a table. . 128K bytes of system memory for storage of display lists and 5085 control programming (expandable to 1.1 megabytes with the addition of system memory features). In a system which has the base 128K bytes of system memory, 64K bytes are reserved for the 5085 control program. Of the remaining 64K bytes, an additional 8K bytes are reserved for these display list functions (as area fill workspace, area fill pattern and line patterns, and future expansion). The remaining 56K bytes, as well as any additional feature of system memory, is available to the user for storage of information for display lists and programmable vector character sets. . Optional System Memory feature (#6311) - 512K each to additional one megabyte of memory. . Polygon area fill - the functioned polygon fill has the following characteristics: - Use of solid or user-defined fill patterns - Filling of 2-D objects including those being dynamically transformed, (e.g., rotated, scaled, and translated) and clipped - Filling of circles as well as concave and convex objects - Filling of multiple overlapped and disjointed polygons that contain shapes (islands) and/or crossing sides (bowties). . Both fixed and programmable line type and character set generators. Four fixed line types and four fixed character sets are provided in the hardware. Fixed characters and line types are not scaled which facilitates reading of text and easy line type identification when a picture has been scaled. The programmable character generator permits users to define their own vector definitions for any character. These vector-defined characters can be scaled and rotated like any other vector the 5085 processes. Multiple programmable character sets and line types may be loaded in the 5085 system memory with the active programmable character set and line type dynamically selectable by the user. . Four simultaneously displayable colors or gray shades (expandable to 256 with the addition of Expansion Pixel Memory features #3621). . Automatic mapping of color to monochrome images to facilitate intermixing of color and monochrome displays. . 3250 graphic order compatibility (see Compatibility section). . Double frame buffers facilitate smooth picture transitions without blanking or flashing. . Three-dimensional, 64K (X) by 64K (Y) by 64K (Z) virtual world coordinate space. . 4K by 4K virtual image space mapped to the 1K by 1K real screen coordinates. . Bit-mapped images in the host displayed conveniently using a special graphic order. . Circle generation - circles that are scaled using the circle generation facility retain a smooth form without requiring host interaction. . Audible alarm with volume control. . Frame buffer write and erase protect function which facilitates animation, menu overlays, and visual detection of vector intersections. . Diskette drive (5-1/4") with a formatted capacity of 360K bytes used to store the 5085 microcode, error statistics, and configuration data; storing microcode in this way establishes an easy method for providing future enhancements with minimum customer impact. 3270 and RS232C Attachment (#5510): This optional feature adds both a 3270 processor and the ability to attach RS232C compatible devices. Feature #5510 permits an IBM 5080 Graphics System user to access 3270 applications in host systems that support an SNA/SDLC attachment. Separate interaction with 3270 and 5080 graphics applications can be maintained simultaneously. The user may alternate which image is shown on the 5081 Display by a simple keyboard action. The integrity of the display images for both applications is normally preserved by the 5085 Graphics Processor. For exceptions, see Principles of Operations, GA23-0134. By providing access to both 3270 and 5080 graphics applications, the IBM 5080 Graphics System supports the data and graphics computing needs of engineers and other professionals in a single workstation. Feature #5510 supports the following 3270 functions: . Base 3270 functions. . Regular and high intensity for each of seven specified colors provided that a 5081 Model 2 (color) and at least one additional Expansion Pixel Memory feature (#3621) is installed. (It is recommended for systems with color 5081 Displays that at least one additional Expansion Pixel Memory feature .#3621) be added in the 5085 Graphics Processor to achieve compatibility with color IBM 3270 displays.) . Screen sizes (80 characters per line): - 12 lines (960 characters) - 24 lines (1920 characters), as the default - 32 lines (2560 characters) - 43 lines (3440 characters) . Multiple partitions. . Extended highlighting, blinking, reverse video, underscore. . Field validation. . Audible alarm. . Alphameric keyboard with 24 program function keys. . APL using the APL keyboard and 12 of the 24 program function keys. . TP communications using SNA and SDLC protocols, external, self-clocked modems at speeds up to 9600 baud. (The 3270 Feature may be multidropped.) RS232C devices: Two 25-pin RS232C attachment ports will support devices that: . Conform to electrical interface specifications, EIA RS232C and CCITT V24. . Have a transmission protocol that can be supported using the generalized 5085 RS232C attachment interface architecture. The RS232C attachment port can support data transmissions up to 9600 bps for ASYNC attachment. Two areas of 16K bytes each (of the 192K bytes of additional memory provided with this optional feature) are used for host-generated device protocols and data that communicate with the RS232C-attached devices. This is suitable for many devices, including the IBM 7374 and 7375 Color Plotters. Each activated RS232C port is addressed separately by the host application using it and is considered one of the addresses of the 5088 Channel Controller or the 3258 Channel Control Unit. When a device is attached to the RS232C port, it can run concurrently with the graphics and 3270 capabilities. Peripheral Device Features Alphameric Keyboard: This feature is a low-profile, cable attached, EBCDIC typewriter-like keyboard which can be adjusted easily to any of three surface inclinations matching a user's preferred hand position. The keyboard has 104 keys that may be operated with or without audible feedback. The key arrangement has four clusters of keys: . 10 special function keys. . 59 keys in QWERTY arrangement, plus special standard keys for engineering graphics. . 11 keys for cursor control and the functions of shifting between 5080 graphic and 3270 modes. . 24 program function keys arranged in two horizontal rows of twelve at the top center. (In 5080 graphics mode, these PF keys can be used in place of the first 24 lighted program function keys if lighted tops aren't required. Normal PF key function is supported in 3270 mode.) APL Keyboard: Use of APL is only supported via the optional 3270 feature (#5510). The APL Keyboard has modified keytops to allow the entry of 81 specific APL characters. Exit and entry from APL entry mode is controlled through a special APL on/off key. In other respects, the APL Keyboard resembles the Alphameric Keyboard. Lighted Program Function Keyboard: The Lighted Program Function Keyboard is a separate assembly with 32 keytops in which amber-colored light emitting diodes (LED) are imbedded. The case profile and surface inclination adjustment are designed to match those of the Alphameric and APL Keyboards. The keyboard LEDs can be turned on and off under host application control to indicate which keys may be selected at a given moment. Correspondingly, a unique signal is returned to the application for any key pressed. In this way, a user and an application may interact. The keyboard functions operate compatibly with 3250 programs. Dials: The dials are a flat, compact, low-profiled, desk-top unit with eight, cone-like dials. The dials may be turned continuously in either direction. Upon rotating the dials, a range of scalar values indicating extent of rotation and direction are signaled to the 5085 Graphics Processor. An application can read and interpret this input for any suitable purpose, such as panning, zooming, and rotating two or three dimensional images. 5088 Graphics Channel Controller: The 5088 operates as a shared, high speed channel-attached controller for the workstations. It may attach to a System/370/43XX/30XX channel with a channel data rate of up to 2.5 megabytes per seconds in data streaming mode or up to one megabyte per second in conventional channel mode. Functional compatibility with the IBM 3258 permits attachment of IBM 3255s and 5085s. Since 5085s may also attach to the 3258, the capability to mix units from the 5080 Graphics System and the 3250 Graphics Display System protects customer's investments and eases migration. The 5088 functional capabilities include: . Compact size (590 mm/23.2" high by 320 mm/12.6" wide by 568 mm/22.37"). (It has the same physical dimensions as the 5085 Processor for easy placement.) . Attachment of sixteen 5085s and/or 3255/3251 workstations and/or RS232C-attached devices on a Model 1. The Model 2 has two sets of 16 attachments for a total of 32 attachments. . Each RS232C compatible device connected to feature #5510 or a 5085 requires one 5088 or 3258 address. This applies, for example, to attachment of the IBM 7374 and 7375 Color Plotters. . Two-megabit per second data rate between the 5088 and 5085 in a 5085 configuration. (A 3255 attached to the 5088 reduces the data rate to any 5085 or 3255 attached to the same 5088 Model 1 or to the same side of a dual 16-attachment, 32 total, 5088 Model 2, to one megabit per second.) . Standard channel interface attachment at up to a 121.9 meters/400 feet distance - block multiplexer, selector, or byte multiplexer (burst-mode) channels. . Use of either 3250 type (75 ohm) cable or 3270 type (93 ohm) cable for attachment to 5085 Processors. The maximum distance between the 5088 and a 5085 depends upon the attenuation characteristics of the cable and any connectors (customer supplied). Use of 3250 (75 ohm) and 3270 (93 ohm) cable permits attachment up to 1,000 meters/3,280 feet apart. The use of special low loss 75 ohm impedance coaxial cable may permit attachment up to 5,000 meters/16,400 feet apart. See "IBM 5080 Graphics System Site Planning and Preparation Guide" (GA23-0129) for details. . Efficient data transmissions by overlapped processing on the host channel and 5085 serial interfaces. . Channel transmission overhead reduced by processing data in blocks up to 64K bytes. The 5088 Graphics Channel Controller provides new channel command capabilities which permit applications to use advanced or extended functions in the 5085 Graphics Processor. Included in these capabilities are: . Control of display lists that are greater than 64K bytes. . Select write/read memory area commands for minimizing channel utilization on large writes/reads. . Loading of programmable vector character sets into system memory. . Controlling allocation of 5085 memory for functions such as large polygon fills which require more than the default workspace. . Overlapping of device processing. . Additional sense information to assist in fault isolation, program debugging, etc. Sense information is provided separately for each 5085 device. The 5088 also supports the 3258 channel commands to assist existing 3250 users in either mixing 5080 systems with 3250 systems or to permit the use of the currently available GAM or GAM/SP Release 1 access methods. When the 5088 execution is limited to 3258 channel commands, the performance characteristics of the 5088 may be less than that of the 3258 depending upon the amount of data that the application reads from the terminals. If the reading frequency and/or volume of input data is low, then the 5088 performance should be comparable to a 3258. (This is normally the case for the IBM-supported CAD/CAM applications.) Additional RAS capabilities: . Enhanced 5088/5085 link problem determination capabilities. . Improved error detection. . I/O error alert. . Machine check broadcast to 5085 with optional automatic restart. . Power on/off remotely from the host CPU. The IBM 5083 Tablet: The tablet is a thin, flat surfaced unit of compact design, which offers a comfortable way for users to interact with the display. It has a palm rest and a tilt height adjustment mechanism. The x-y coordinate position of the stylus or cursor is transmitted to the 5085 Graphics Processor. . Dimensions of 400 mm/15.75 inches wide, 431.5 mm/17 inches long, and 21 mm/0.82 inches deep which includes an active area of 292 mm/11.5 inches by 292 mm/11.5 inches. . Resolution characteristic of .127 mm/.005 inches. . Light weight (6.5 lbs. or 2.9 Kg) for use either on a work surface or a user's lap. . Cursor feature with a convenient hand-held "mouse-shaped" unit with four buttons for application use and a fine cross hair for precise alignment and accurate digitizing of source data. . Optional stylus feature (pen-like device) for user interaction with the 5080 system. (An indication is provided to the application program when the user activates the stylus tip switch by pressing the stylus tip to the tablet surface. The tactile feedback from pressing the stylus tip assures the user that a selection has been made.) . 3250 light pen emulation using the stylus or cursor feature (mutually exclusive, one feature may be attached at a time) . Models 1 and 2 3/84 Technical Information Specified Operating Environment Software Support: All functions of the IBM 5080 Graphics System, including a subset which supports the IBM 3250 Graphics Display System, operate under Release 2 of the IBM Graphics Access Method System Product (GAM/SP). Under GAM/SP Release 1 with VM/SP or the Graphics Access Method (GAM) sub-component of the graphics programming services component in MVS/370, MVS/XA, or VS/1, support of the IBM 5080 is limited to the 3250 subset. However, users are able to invoke extended 5085 function, such as color, by coding display lists using appropriate 5085 graphic orders. Larger than 32K byte display list buffers are not supported. See GAM/SP Programming Announcement dated November 1, 1983, for details. Compatibility: IBM 3250 Graphics Display System applications should operate on an equivalently configured IBM 5080 Graphics System. Although the 5080 system is functionally 3250 compatible, there are certain incompatibilities due to the use of a raster display (the 5081) to emulate a directed beam display (the 3251) and to certain performance or function differences. These differences are in the following areas: . Highlighting by overwriting of vectors . Vectors with a single endpoint off the screen . Never ending display list . Wrapping of vectors in coordinate space . Last position of an unprotected field . Buffer wrap . Address returned by GEOS (end of order list) . End of application . Time dependent display list programs . The 5083 Tablet in light pen emulation mode instead of the 3250 light pen For explanations of each, see "IBM 5080 Graphics System Principles of Operation" (GA23-0134). The 3250 architecture is defined so that on a 1K x 1K raster display, character truncation would normally occur around the display periphery. A migration aid, called normalization, is provided that allows the viewing of the entire 3250 screen without program modification. (See "IBM 5080 Graphic System: User's Guide," GA23-0130 and "IBM 5080 Graphics System Principles of Operation," GA23-0134.) Relationship to 3250 performance -- The following performance enhancements have been made to the 5080: . More information can be displayed on the 5081 Displays while maintaining a bright, sharp, steady image. . Higher host channel and serial interface speeds will provide faster data transmissions. . Larger blocks of data (64K bytes) may be transmitted using Graphics Access Method System/Product Release 2. . Overlapping of device processing using new channel commands. . One on one dedication of a 5085 processor's resources to an end user eliminates performance inconsistencies that may result from the 3255's resources being shared by up to three end users. The 3270 compatibility requires the optional 3270 and RS232C Attachment feature (#5510). It is recommended for systems with color 5081 Displays that at least one additional Expansion Pixel Memory feature (#3621) be added in the 5085 Graphics Processor to achieve compatibility with color IBM 3270 monitors. The 3270 programs can operate with the 5080 system using host systems that support SNA/SDLC 3270 attachment and applications that use the supported features. The 3270 functions and attachments not supported are: . Data entry keyboards . Numeric lock . Magnetic slot reader . Magnetic hand scanner . Loadable programmed symbols (PSS) . Multiple partitions with scrolling . Tablet emulation of a light pen . Keylock Security, Auditability, and Control The IBM 5080 Graphics System uses the security and auditability features of the system control programs under which it operates. User management is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and implementating the security features for administrative procedures and for appropriate controls in application systems. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The customer is responsible for: . Physical planning and site preparation, including required electrical service and facilities. Setup and installation of: - 5081 Display. - 5085 Graphics Processor and peripheral features (lighted program function keyboard, alphameric keyboard, dials). - 5083 Tablet with stylus or cursor features.
