IBM 3179 COLOR DISPLAY STATION Announcement Letter Number 184-039 dated March 20, 1984 US - Last Revised on March 20, 1984 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability IBM announces the 3179 Color Display Station, a new, low price, color display member of the IBM 3270 Information Display System. The 3179 is a compact, 7-color, 1920-character, 14-inch CRT with bright, clear colors and a smudge-free screen surface. It features a new, modifiable keyboard, and function equivalent to that provided by both the IBM 3279 Models S2A and S2B. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS * Low price plus volume procurement discounts up to 40% at quantities of 3,000 or more. * Compatibility - Plug compatible with IBM 3279 display Models S2A, S2B, 2A, 2B, and 2X with comparable function. - Can be used in existing 3178 or 3278 environments to display four colors with existing field attribute definitions. * Screen characteristics - Bright, clear colors. - Requires no color convergence adjustments. - Etched, enhanced contrast CRT screen is designed to reduce both light reflections and fingerprint smudges and to produce high quality, high resolution alphameric text. * New keyboard - A new modifiable keyboard with 122 keys provides 24 individual program function (PF) keys, a numeric pad in adding machine layout, and cursor-move keys positioned in a cross pattern for easier use. - Keyboard layout can be modified by the customer to fit application requirements. - Low-profile, movable keyboard with coiled cable has an adjustment for use at any of three angles of inclination: 6, 12, or 18 degrees. - Keyboard switch setting by operator allows either of two modes of keyboard operation: . Emulation mode When a 3179 keyboard is used in Emulation mode, it must be attached to the following engineering change (EC) or microcode release levels of the control unit or Display/Printer Adapter. 3275 Any EC level 3274 Configuration Support A Microcode Release Level 15 or higher Configuration Support B Microcode Release Level 26 or higher Configuration Support C Microcode Release Level 47 or higher Configuration Support D Microcode Release Level 61 or higher Configuration Support P Any Microcode Release Level Configuration Support T Microcode Release Level 31 or higher 4321 Any EC level 4331 Any EC level 4361 Any EC level The 3179 keyboard emulates existing 3178, 3278, or 3279 typewriter keyboard. (#4621, #4627) If the 3274 is configured to support ASCII, the necessary keyboard changes are made by using clear lens keycaps and paper insert accessories. If the 3274 is configured to support entry assist in Emulation mode, the necessary keyboard changes are made by using clear lens keycaps and paper insert accessories or stick on labels which are shipped with the 3274 Control Unit or ordered as publications. . Native mode When a 3179 keyboard is used in Native mode, it must be attached to a 3274 with Configuration Support D (microcode Release 63). This combination provides several levels of function: If the 3274 is configured to support entry assist or response time monitor, a keyboard overlay is used to indicate the appropriate definition of the PF keys. If the 3274 is configured to support APL or data entry, the necessary keycaps to change the keyboard appropriately are available as accessories. The 3274 keyboard definition utility is used to redefine the keyboard layout. Additionally, the construction of the keyboard is such that all standard size (or square) keys have a removable keycap upon which the nomenclature is engraved. With these facilities, a customer may define the keyboard layout by swapping, moving, deleting, or copying keys. Sets of keycaps will be made available as accessories to accommodate some common layouts. Clear lens keycaps and paper inserts will also be provided for customer-unique labeling. * Attachment The 3179 attaches to a 3274 Control Unit, a 3276 Control Unit Display Station (via the Terminal Adapter), or a 4321, 4331, or 4361 Processor (via the Display/Printer Adapter). * Functional offerings - The 3179 consists of five machine elements: video, logic, keyboard, pedestal, and line cord. - Audible alarm and security keylock are standard. - Keyboard numeric lock (ON/OFF) is standard, selected via keyboard switch setting by operator. - The 3276 and the Display/Printer Adapter of 4321, 4331, and 4361 support four-color only. The 3274 supports both four-color and seven-color. - The ASCII keyboard layout is available in Emulation mode via the use of clear lens keycap and paper insert accessories. - The 3179 allows the customer who does not need the numerics on the "numeric pad" and who wants to ease the learning process associated with the new PF key locations to copy some PF keys down to the "numeric pad." PF keycaps for standard keyboard layout are available as an accessory. - The 3179 consumes less than half the energy and generates less heat than the 3279. - The 3179 does not provide the following 3279 optional functions: . 2560-character screen . Magnetic reader control . Selector light pen . Programmed symbols (no GDDM graphics capabilities) . Video output . Operator selected color and highlight keys * Human Factors - Video pedestal, provided as standard, provides 19.4 degrees of tilt (minus 4.4 to plus 15 degrees) and 180 degrees of swivel (plus or minus 90 degrees from the center position). - Compact display unit takes approximately one-third less desk space, compared to the 3279, and is 10 kilograms (22 pounds) lighter. DESCRIPTION * The 3179 attaches to a 3274 Control Unit, a 3276 Control Unit Display Station (via the Terminal Adapter), or a 4321, 4331, or 4361 Processor (via the Display/Printer Adapter). * Entry assist is supported for the 3179 in Emulation and Native modes when the 3274 has appropriate microcode. This can provide improved operator convenience and productivity for text-related tasks. Note: Keyboard overlays may be used for the nomenclature in Native mode. Stick on labels shipped with the 3274 Control Unit or ordered as publications may be used for the nomenclature in Native mode. * The response time monitor and alert capability are supported for the 3179. * The 3179 supports ASCII requirements in Emulation mode via the use of clear lens keycap accessories, which can be labeled with the appropriate ASCII notation. It is required that the control unit be customized for ASCII. * The 3179 supports APL and data entry keyboards via the use of accessory keycaps in Native mode. * The 3179 supports standard emulation keyboard layout via the use of accessory keycaps and 3274 keyboard definition utility. * Various keycaps are provided as accessories and can be ordered from the IBM National Distribution Division (NDD) for the modification of the keyboard. (See your IBM marketing representative.) * The following accessory keycap changes are available for shipment only from the IBM plant at the time of machine order entry: - APL Keycaps and Keycap Removal Tool (feature #3028) - Data Entry Keycaps and Keycap Removal Tool (feature #3031) - Clear Lens Keycaps (60 caps) and Keycap Removal Tool (feature #3025) - PF Keycaps for 87-Key Typewriter Keyboard Layout and Keycap Removal Tool (feature #3034) * The 3179 must be used with Configuration Support D with microcode Release 63 in the attached 3274 to take advantage of the modifiable aspects of the keyboard. * The keyboard definition utility is supported in the 3274 Configuration Support D with microcode Release 63. * A keyboard removal tool is standard with the 3179, so the customer can readily change keycaps. * A Switch Control Unit (feature #9181) is available as an accessory and can be ordered from the IBM National Distribution Division (NDD). It is also available for shipment only from the IBM plant at the time of machine order entry. * Through the use of error indicators, offline tests, and the Customer Problem Analysis and Resolution (CPAR) guide, the customer will isolate a failing element for repair or replacement.
