These conditions can be summarized as follows: * Extended temperature operation * Extended vibration and shock operation * Extended voltage transients operation * Extended particulates operation The 5531 provides plant floor personnel with a system capable of handling computer applications in the plant floor environment. It supports all of the functions of similarly configured IBM Personal Computer XTs. The hardware configuration consists of a system processing unit (including processor, memory, combination adapter, diskette, fixed disk and corresponding adapters), a keyboard, and an optional 5532 Industrial Color Display. Each 5531 comes with a keyboard, 128Kb of memory installed in the system board, one dual-sided diskette drive (formatted capacity of up to 360Kb), a diskette adapter, a 10MB fixed-disk drive and fixed-disk drive adapter, a color/graphics monitor adapter, and a combination adapter. The combination adapter offers a fully programmable asynchronous communication port, a parallel interface port for printer attachment, a battery-backed clock, and a thermal sensor interface. DOS support modules for the clock and thermal sensor will be shipped with the system. A cover door for the disk/diskette area is provided to facilitate the addition of an optional, user-installable key lock which restricts access to the disk/diskette area. The 83-key keyboard offers commonly used data and word processing functions in a design that combines the familiar typewriter and calculator-keypad layouts. Special symbols, such as those used to draw lines, may be accessed with a combination of keys. The keyboard is attached to the system unit with a coiled cable, permitting adaptation to a variety of work environments. Depending on the application program, up to 40 special function keys can be supported. The system unit contains eight feature card slots. Six of the slots are full-feature slots that will accept full-size feature cards. The remaining two are short slots that will accept smaller feature cards. A standard 5531 configuration makes use of three full-feature slots and one short slot. The three full-feature slots are used as follows: one for the diskette drive adapter, one for the fixed-disk drive adapter, and one for the color/graphics monitor adapter. One short slot is used for the combination adapter. Additional 64Kb memory increments are available. Two additional memory increments can be installed on the system board and the remainder on expansion feature cards. The total memory can be a maximum of 640Kb. A 5532 Industrial Color Display, or a suitable video display, is required for video output. Computer-generated video output may vary from a simple 40 x 25 character alphameric display, 80-character per line "text" output, or medium to high-resolution graphics. PUBLICATIONS Two binders are shipped with each system unit. The "Guide to Operations" contains operating instructions, set-up procedure instructions, problem determination procedures, option installation procedures, and relocate instructions. The BASIC reference manual is also provided. The following technical reference and hardware maintenance and service manuals for the IBM Industrial Computer will be available for purchase. For prices, see "Charges" below. * IBM Industrial Computer Technical Reference Manual (feature #6003). * IBM Industrial Computer Hardware Maintenance and Service Manual (feature #6004). A 5532 Industrial Color Display or a suitable video display is required for display output. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: The 5531 supports DOS Version 2 or later. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL The 5531 can be used and managed to limit the risk of unintended modification, destruction, or disclosure of sensitive data. The customer is responsible for the selection, implementation, and adequacy of appropriate measures. The customer is also responsible for the accuracy and integrity of results. If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The 5531 and 5532 are customer setup (CSU) machines. Detailed setup instructions are included with each machine. IBM setup is available at IBM hourly rates and minimum charges. The customer must unpack the system components, attach them correctly, and run the power-on self-test. In the event of a malfunction, the customer is responsible for determining if the problem is in the hardware or the software. INSTALLABILITY: The system unit and keyboard are separate units. The keyboard is connected by a coiled cable through a rear-mounted jack on the system unit. The display is connected via the color/graphics monitor adapter installed in the system unit. Once turned on, the system unit automatically runs a power-on self-test to verify system readiness. If a failure is found, an identifying number appears on the screen. If the power-on self-test successfully completes, the BASIC ROM interpreter is made ready and identified on the screen, and the system is then available for use.
