The IBM 3979 Expansion Unit extends the configuration by adding the ability to connect the IBM 5277 Mouse, IBM Color Jetprinter (3852 Model 2), and IBM 7371 or 7372 Color Plotter. The 3179 G models consist of the following workstation elements: Model G1 G2 Video X X Logic X X Typewriter Keyboard X Typewriter/APL2 Keyboard X Pedestal X X Power Cord - 2.8 m (9.0 ft) X X Video Cable X X A modifiable keyboard with 122 keys provides 24 individual program function keys, a numeric pad, and improved cursor-move keys. A keyboard definition utility is supported in the 3179 G models to allow definition of customer-specific keyboard layouts. A keycap removal tool is standard, so that keycaps can be interchanged conveniently. Cursor movement has been improved. When cursor keys are depressed, the cursor accelerates. Two cursor types are provided: alphameric and graphic. The graphic cursor (Cross and Cross Hair) supports picture element (PEL) level resolution. The IBM 5277 Mouse may be used to control both alphameric and graphic cursors on the screen. The graphic cursor controlled by the cursor-positioning keys or the 5277 Mouse provides coordinate (x, y) input via the 3979 Expansion Unit. The Selectable Field Tab key and Cursor Select key provide for selection of light-pen detectable fields in lieu of a light pen. The Response Time Monitor and the Alert capability are supported. Entry Assist is standard. An audible alarm and the security keylock are standard. The security key is removable in both LOCK and UNLOCK positions. The low-profile keyboard provides three angles of inclination (6, 12, or 18 degrees) and a coiled cable. The screen characteristics are as follows: o An all-points-addressable, 14-inch CRT color display provides a bright, steady presentation of 720 x 384 picture elements in a viewable area of 240 mm (9.4 inches) by 172 mm (6.8 inches). o The display requires no color convergence adjustments. o Transient patterns associated with buffer loading of programmed symbols (PS) are eliminated. o The etched, enhanced-contrast CRT screen is designed to reduce light reflections and fingerprint smudges to produce high-quality, high-resolution output. o Two fixed-character fonts can be selected by host application programs for data presentation: - Up to 1,920 characters can be displayed as 80 characters by 24 lines. - Up to 2,560 characters can be displayed as 80 characters by 32 lines. The video pedestal, provided as a standard feature, provides 19.4 degrees of tilt (+15 degrees to -4.4 degrees) and 180 degrees of swivel (+ or - 90 degrees from the center position) to allow the display to be individually positioned. Through the use of error indicators, offline tests, and the Operator Reference and Problem Solving Guide, the customer may isolate a failing element for repair or replacement. SCHEDULE First customer shipments of the IBM 3179 Models G1 and G2 and IBM 3279 are planned for June 1985. TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS: The 3179 G models require the IBM 3274 Control Unit with Configuration Support D (Microcode Release 64 or higher) and the IBM 3274 Load Diskette (#9301). Note: Since #9301 is used to support both the 3290 and the 3179 G models, customers should read the diskette label. The label will state if the IBM 3179 G models are supported by that diskette. SYSTEM ATTACHMENT: The 3179 G models attach to IBM System/370, 43XX, 303X, 308X, and 3090 processors, and to the IBM 8100 System via an IBM 3274. All attachment environments are supported (SNA local channel, SNA remote, non-SNA local channel, and BSC remote). Attachment to the 3274 is via the same type of coaxial cable as is used to attach an IBM 3178, 3179, 3180 Model 1, 3278, or 3279. PRINTERS: Local copy print operation (alphamerics only) from the 3179 G models to printers attached to the IBM 3274 Control Unit requires the SNA character string (SCS) feature. Specify #9660 is required on the 3287 Printer for printing alphameric information. For printing graphic information via GDDM, the programmed symbols (PS) feature is required. Refer to GDDM General Information (GC33-0100). Programmed Symbols-4A (#5783) must be specified on the 3287 Printer. The 3268 Color Printer Model 2C requires RPQ 530277. Additionally, one IBM Color Jetprinter (3852 Model 2) can be connected directly to the 3179 Model G1 or G2, providing the capability for local screen copy of alphameric and graphic information. The Color Jetprinter may be alternatively attached via the 3979 Expansion Unit. (Note: The Printer Interface Cable, #2058, must be specified for the IBM Color Jetprinter.) SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: The 3179 G models are supported, like the 3279, by the current levels of DOS/VSE, OS/VS1, MVS/370, Multiple Virtual Storage/Extended Architecture (MVS/XA), Virtual Machine/System Product (VM/SP), VM/SP High Performance Option, and SSX/VSE for System 370, 43XX, 303X, 308X, and 3090 processors. The 3179 G models are supported by DPPX/SP Release 2 and DPCX Release 5 for 8100 Systems in alphameric mode only. Non-SNA IMS and TCAM are not supported. GDDM RELEASE 4 SUPPORT: An extension to Release 4 supports the new interactive graphic display (see 'Prerequisites"). GDDM utilizes the interactive graphic display (see 'Prerequisites"). GDDM utilizes the 3179 G model device intelligence for offloading vector-to-raster conversion (one of the most processor-bound stages of picture generation) and default vector and some image symbol sets, thus reducing host processing. GDDM provides direct host plotter support to the 3179 G models for 7371 or 7372 Color Plotters attached via the 3979 Expansion Unit. Note: Only one plotter may be attached. Specify the IEEE488 interface (#9920) and cable (#5040) for the plotter. OPERATING ENVIRONMENT: The operating environments of configurable input/output units are different. IBM 3179 Model G1 and G2, 3979, 5277, 7371, and 7372 environments are Class C: 10 - 40.6 degrees C (50 - 105 degrees F); 8 - 80% relative humidity. The IBM 3852 Model 2 environment is Class B: 15.6 - 32.2 degrees C (60 - 90 degrees F); 20 - 80% relative humidity. COMPATIBILITY AND MIGRATION: The new 3179 G models are data-stream compatible with today's 3270 displays in alphameric application environments. The 3179 G models will accept 3270 data streams and will support extended highlighting and colors. Existing alphameric applications will run unmodified on the 3179 G models (in their current screen sizes). No programming changes are required of current alphameric applications unless the program is affected by IBM 3274 Control Unit configuration restrictions (such as no Category B terminals) or required hardware functions not available with the 3179 G models (such as magnetic readers, light pens, triple-plane programmed symbols, encryption/decryption, or unsupported screen sizes). Host applications that support the IBM 3279 Model S3G and employ query may have to be modified to be capable of receiving additional query response data from the 3179 Models G1 and G2. Mainframe interactive graphics applications that run under GDDM Release 3 can run largely unchanged on the 3179 G models with an enhancement to GDDM Release 4 and extensions as noted under 'Prerequisites." However, applications that access the programmed 'Prerequisites." However, applications that access the programmed symbol sets directly or use triple-plane programmed symbol sets may require modification. Temporary storage requirements should be considered. When graphics applications are run under ISPF Version 2 and GDDM Release 4, the ISPF split function is not available. PERFORMANCE: The use of the vector-to-raster conversion in the 3179 G models may offer graphics performance advantages as compared to the 3279 Model S3G. Host processing service time will be reduced. It will now be more practical to run graphics applications on entry-level IBM 43XX systems. The graphical output response time of the 3179 G models is faster or slower than that of the 3279 Model S3G depending on the application, length, and content of the data stream. Customers should be apprised that special character fonts and complex graphic output composed of many short vectors increase the data stream length and require longer processing time in the 3179 G models than corresponding operations in the 3279 Model S3G. Host application programmers should be aware of the enhanced terminal functions provided by the 3179 G models to improve performance: o If the 'area fill" function is specified to the terminal in lieu o If the 'area fill" function is specified to the terminal in lieu of being implemented by vectors from the host, the data stream content is simplified and performance is improved. o If programmable and image symbols are loaded in the 3179 Model G1 or G2 storage, subsequent screen refresh due to graphic modification will improve performance by not invoking a symbol reload. o If the default vector symbols stored in the IBM 3179 G models are utilized, performance is improved. However, excessive use of default vector symbols may result in longer processing time in the IBM 3179 G models than corresponding operations in the IBM 3279 Model S3G. When 3179 G terminals are used for alphameric data only, they will have performance characteristics that are similar to other 3270 display stations. For additional performance information, contact your IBM representative. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL Data security functions provided by the 3179 G models are nondisplay field control (specified in the attribute byte) and the security keylock. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of these features, for administrative procedures, and for appropriate controls in application systems. If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY: The 3179 G models and 3979 are designated as customer setup (CSU) machines. A copy of the Setup Instructions (GA18-2262 and GA18-2272), which contain detailed CSU information, will be shipped with the respective machines. Customers are responsible for all modifications they make to the IBM 3179 Model G1 or G2 keyboard. Customers are also responsible for handling any keyboard changes necessary in the event of a maintenance action. That is, the customer should remove all special keycaps prior to submitting a keyboard for exchange or repair. A keyboard with the standard key layout should be sent to IBM and a keyboard with the standard key layout will be returned to the customer. LIMITATIONS: o Only one 3979 Expansion Unit may be attached to the 3179 G1 or G2. o The Printer Interface Cable (part number 6342058, #2058) must be specified when attaching the Color Jetprinter (3852 Model 2). o Plotters are only supported via IEEE488 interface. o The BSC copy command is not supported. o The graphics escape required for APL2 is supported. o Programmed symbols (PSA and PSB only) are supported in single color. o The following are not available: - RPQs - Magnetic reader control and accessories - Monocase switch - Selector light pen - Video output.
