IBM 4683 POINT-OF-SALE TERMINAL MODEL 1 AND 2 Announcement Letter Number 186-003 dated January 8, 1986 US - Last Revised on January 8, 1986 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The 4683 Point-of-Sale Terminal model 1 is the primary terminal for the IBM 4680 Store System. It attaches to the IBM 5170 Personal Computer AT/Store Controller model 839 or 899 by a store loop. The 4683 model 2 is the secondary point-of-sale terminal which cable attaches to the 4683 model 1 and is dependent on the model 1 for processing and storage. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Up to sixty-four 4683 model 1s can be loop attached to a 5170 model 839 or 899 o High speed store loop operates at 38.4 kbs o One 4683 model 2 can be attached to each 4683 model 1 o All 4683 components are customer setup o Model 1 includes a base control unit with 1,024K bytes of storage o Each model contains adapters for attaching basic I/O devices and two expansion slots for attaching additional I/O devices. o Either model can be configured in an integrated or distributed environment. o Multiple maintenance service offerings are available through IBM Service/Exchange Centers o Each model contains 2,048 bytes of storage with long term storage retention for vital data and totals o Store loop wiring utilizes the IBM Cabling System components DESCRIPTION The 4683 is a user-programmable point-of-sale terminal for use with the IBM 4680 Store System. Under application program control, the terminal provides the capability to process point-of-sale transactions, collect data, authorize credit, look up prices, and process other inquiry and data entry functions. The 4683 model 1, and the model 2 when connected to the model 1, will continue many sales functions, under application program control, when disconnected from the 5170 model 839 or 899. The 4683 model 1 includes a base unit with 1,024K bytes of storage, a microprocessor, and cable receptacles that allow attachment of basic point-of-sale input and output devices. In addition, the base control unit contains two slots for the installation of feature expansion options to which additional input/output devices can be attached. The 4683 model 1 communicates with the 5170 model 839 or 899 by a high speed store loop at 38.4 kbs. The 4683 model 2 includes a base unit and has the same input and output attachment capability as the model 1. The model 2 must be cable attached to the model 1 and depends on the model 1 for processing and storage. The base control unit of the model 1 contains a customer replaceable battery and a charger that maintains the 1,024K bytes of storage for up to 15 minutes if the power source is interrupted. The data and programs retained will allow transaction restart if power is returned during the battery retention period. In addition, data and programs are maintained through a power supply trickle charge feature. This feature supplies power to storage, independent of the terminal on/off switch position, as long as the 4683 is plugged into a powered wall receptacle. Both models include 2,048 bytes of storage with long-term storage retention by a long-life battery. This storage is used to store vital terminal and customer data including totals. 1,024 bytes of this storage is reserved for customer application use. INPUT/OUTPUT UNITS See "Special Features," "Machine Elements," and "Accessories" below. The basic point-of-sale input/output units that can be attached to the base control unit of both models include a keyboard, cash drawers, printer, and operator display. These units can be attached in either an integrated or distributed configuration. The base unit of both 4683 models also allows the attachment of an IBM 3687 Checkout Scanner model 2 and an IBM 1520 Hand-Held Scanner model A02. A magnetic stripe reader may be mounted on, and attached to, the keyboard. Additional I/O devices can be cable attached to either model by customer setup feature expansion options. Notice to IBM Customers January 8, 1986 IBM 4683 POINT-OF-SALE TERMINAL MODEL 1 AND 2 IBM 5170 PERSONAL COMPUTER AT/STORE CONTROLLER MODEL 839 AND 899 REVISED VOLUME PROCUREMENT AMENDMENTS FOR STORE SYSTEMS Today IBM announced the new IBM 4683 Point-of-Sale Terminal model 1 and 2 and the IBM 5170 Personal Computer AT/Store Controller model 839 and 899. This notice describes transition considerations and modifications to your existing Volume Procurement Amendment (VPA) Exhibit for Store Systems as a result of this announcement. The attached VPA Exhibit No. 3651-3 automatically supersedes your present Store Systems Exhibit. Since this new offering is no less favorable than the offering it replaces, IBM assumes you accept the new Exhibit unless you notify us otherwise in writing. The 4683 may be substituted for other Category T machines in the Exhibit provided that such substituted machines are ordered and shipped within the contract period. If you have a VPA or special bid contract for Category C machines you may wish to revise downward the total quantity of Category C machines and install 5170 model 839s or 899s instead. For those stores in which 4683s are to be installed you may revise your VPA or special bid under the following guidelines: IBM must receive, in writing, before September 30, 1986, your order for 5170 System Unit model 839s or 899s and the requested changes to the existing Store Systems Contract. The existing Store Systems Total Quantity of Machines for Category C will be reduced and the discount percent applicable to 3651 Control Units shipped after the date of receipt of the requested change will be based on the revised Total Quantity of Machines. Category C Settlement and Adjustment charges, if any, will be calculated based on the revised Total Quantity of Machines. All other terms and conditions apply. A copy of the revised Personal Computer VPA Exhibit No.5150-27 is enclosed. An IBM Personal Computer Volume Procurement Amendment or a special bid contract, for which the 5170 System Unit model 839 and/or 899 is approved, reflecting the Order Quantity of 5170 model 839s or 899s must be signed. The quantity of System Units must be equal to or greater than the quantity of 3651 Control Units cancelled. Applicable prices, terms, and conditions of the IBM Personal Computer Volume Procurement Amendment or special bid contract will apply. (SEE HARD COPY FOR EXHIBIT.) For a quantity of 5170 System Unit model 839s and/or 899s ordered in lieu of Category C Store System controllers which is less than the minimum IBM Personal Computer VPA quantity, no discount will be available; however, the Category C commitment may be reduced as described above. If you have an existing IBM Personal Computer VPA or a special bid for which the 5170 model 839 or 899 is approved, you may elect to increase the quantity commitment in Category A by an amount equal to or greater than the reduction in the quantity of 3651 Control Units on your Store Systems VPA Exhibit or special bid. If these additional quantities qualify for a higher discount level, an additional quantity supplement must be signed. The expiration date of the Personal Computer VPA or special bid will be unchanged. Please direct any questions to your IBM marketing representative.
