The 3196 can be attached to the IBM System/36, System/38, or the IBM 5294 Remote Controller (IBM 3196 Models A10 and B10 only). The 3196 is an attractively priced, 1,920 character, 12-inch monochrome CRT with a smudge-resistant screen that is available in green or amber-gold phosphor. It is compatible with the IBM 5291 Display Station Model 2 and applications written for that product will operate on the 3196. It is a high-quality, monochrome CRT display station with improved ergonomics, function, and price. It is compatible with the IBM 5291 Model 2 and application programs written for that product will operate on the 3196. It can be used with the IBM System/36 and System/38 for entering, editing, and displaying alphanumeric data. The 3196 displays up to 1,920 characters with 24 lines of 80 characters each. A 25th line is dedicated to the display of operator information. The 3196 may be attached locally to the System/36 and System/38, or remotely through the IBM 5294 Remote Controller (Models A10 and B10 only). Cable-through is standard with the auto-termination unit provided. An operator-adjustable audible alarm is provided to alert the operator to special conditions. The 3196 has an etched screen which minimizes glare and is resistant to fingerprints. Security key is removable in both lock and unlock positions. o Low-profile keyboard providing two angles of inclination (6 or 12 degrees) with coiled cable o Screen Characteristics - The 12-inch CRT monochrome (green or amber-gold) display provides a bright, steady presentation of 720 x 384 picture elements in a viewable area of 220 mm (8.6 inches) by 143 mm (5.6 inches). - The etched, enhanced contrast CRT screen is designed to reduce light reflections and fingerprint smudges to produce high-quality, high-resolution output. o The video pedestal, a standard feature, provides 19.4 degrees of tilt (plus 15 degrees to minus 4.4 degrees) and 180 degrees of swivel (plus or minus 90 degrees from the center position) to enable the display to be individually positioned. o Through the use of error indicators, offline tests, and the IBM 3196 Display Station Problem Solving Guide, the customer may isolate a failing element for repair or replacement. Models A20 and B20 are not supported on the 5294. TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT o Air Temperature - 10 degrees to 40.6 degrees C (50 degrees to 105 degrees F) o Humidity - 8 to 80% RH o FCC Class: C SYSTEM ATTACHMENT: The 3196 attaches directly to System/36 and System/38 Processors. The 3196 Models A10 and B10 also attach remotely to these systems via an IBM 5294. Attachment is by the same type of cable used to attach an IBM 5291, 3179 Model 2, 3180 Model 2, and other IBM 5250 Information Display System devices. SOFTWARE SUPPORT: The 3196 Models A10 and B10 are supported, like the IBM 5291, by the current System/36 and System/38 System Releases 4 and 7. (See Prerequisites for details.) Models A20 and B20 also operate like the IBM 5291, but require RPQs on systems. The 3196 is also supported by IBM application programs such as Manufacturing Accounting and Production Information Control System (MAPICS), Distribution Management Accounting System (DMAS), Construction Management Accounting System (CMAS), Displaywrite/36, Query/36, and Personal Services/36. COMPATIBILITY AND MIGRATION: The 3196 is data stream-compatible with today's 5291 displays in alphanumeric application environments. The 3196 will accept IBM 5291 and 3180 Model 2 data streams, and will run existing alphanumeric applications unmodified (except for possible changes due to screen size or to take advantage of added function). Note: The IBM 3196 must be properly configured on the System/36 or System/38. PREREQUISITES: The 3196 Models A10 and B10 attach to the System/36, System/38, or 5294 Remote Control Unit via the IBM Cabling System, twinaxial cable, or equivalent. Programming support is as follows: o System/36 - Release 4, or higher o System/38 - Release 7, or higher o 5294 - On System/36 Release 5, or higher. Release 4 with PTF Diskette Level DK2203, or higher. - On System/38 Release 8, or higher. Release 7 with Interim EC 837998F. The 3196 Models A20 and B20 attach to the IBM System/36 and System/38. Programming support is: o System/36 - Release 5, or higher o System/38 - Release 8, or higher Interim programming support is provided by new releases of microcode being made available as Standard RPQs. (See Notes below for ordering instructions). Support is provided as follows: o System/36 - Release 4 of the System Support Program (SSP) (5727-SS1 for 5360) with RPQ P84112* - Release 4 of the SSP (5727-SS1 for 5362) with RPQ P84113* - Release 4 of the SSP (5727-SS6 for 5364) with RPQ P84114* Note: Customers who have ordered the Office Enhancement (5727-SS1, #6240) for Release 4 (for 5360 and 5362 only) will have this RPQ function as part of the microcode update being shipped with the enhancement. Separate installation of an RPQ is not required. o System/38: Release 7 of CPF (5714-SS1 for 5381) #9119*. o The 5294 does not support Models A20 and B20. RPQs for the System/36 (P84112 for the 5360) and the specify #9119 for the System/38 (5381) requires installation by an IBM customer service representative. * RPQs for the System/36 (P84112, P84113, P84114) and the specify #9119 on the System/38 will be withdrawn with the availability of the System/36 Release 5 and System/38 Release 8. RPQ LIMITATIONS: The following limitations apply to the support of the Enhanced Keyboard using System/36 Release 4 RPQs: o The IBM 3196 Models A20 and B20 are not supported on Port 0 with an address of 0 used as a system console with Release 4 and the above RPQs. With Release 5, this limitation is removed. o The above RPQs and the support in the Office Enhancement (5737-SS1, #6240) changes the workstation microcode. Any other workstation RPQ is mutually exclusive. RPQ ORDERING INFORMATION: All items are no-charge. The following items should be taken into consideration when selecting the 3196 keyboard: o 122-Key Typewriter Keyboard - Similar layout to the IBM 3179, 3180, 3290, and 3270-PC. - Is not modifiable. o 102-Key Enhanced Keyboard - Is not modifiable. - Is not supported on the IBM 5294 Remote Control Unit. - RPQs may be required on IBM System/36 and System/38. (See the Prerequisites section.) PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY: The 3196 is designated as a customer set-up (CSU) machine. A detailed copy of the set-up instructions will be shipped with each machine. PHYSICAL PLANNING: See the IBM 3196 Display Station Description (GA18-2481) for detailed physical planning information. POWER RATINGS AND LINE CORD: Power - 120V AC, 1-phase, 3-wire, 60Hz; a 2.8 meter (9.0 foot) line cord with non-locking plug is available as standard. A 1.8 meter (6 foot) line cord with non-locking plug is also available. PERFORMANCE: The 3196 will have performance characteristics equal to or better than the IBM 5291 Display Station Model 2. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL Data security functions provided by the 3196 are non-display field control (specified in the attribute byte) and the security keylock. User management is responsible for implementation of these functions. If sensitive data is sent over external communications facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. IBM will assist the customer on-site in performing CPAR procedures using the same documentation available to the customer. All on-site assistance is provided at an hourly service basis at the applicable rates and minimums. REPAIR IDENTIFICATION TAG: The repair identification tag is used to identify each element (logic, video and keyboard) of all element exchange products. The repair identification tag is used by IBM for service entitlement. Only the type and serial number of the product is stored in IBM's entitlement system. Therefore, the repair identification tag is used to tie the logic, video and keyboard elements to the product type and serial number. The required number of repair identification tags are attached to the logic element when it is shipped from the factory. The repair identification tags must be removed from this element and installed on each element during initial set-up. Detail information on where to install the repair identification tags is contained in the Display Station Set-Up Instruction manual which is shipped with each element exchange product. Please refer to the set-up manual for the exact location of the repair identification tags.
