The IBM Enhanced Keyboard on the 3179 Model 220 is a low-profile keyboard with selectable tilt and sculptured, non-glare key tops that retain the tactile feedback. It provides all the functions required of the 3179 Model 200 in a smaller package with ease-of-use nomenclature to assist new users. The IBM Enhanced Keyboard merges the requirements of three major users: the Office Systems user, the Personal Computer user, and the user who communicates and interacts with larger computer systems. The keyboard layout is arranged in four sections: o Typing section o Numeric pad o Cursor/screen controls o Function keys The function keys are arranged into logical groupings - three groups of four, providing 24 functions in two shifts. The tab, caps lock, shift, and backspace keys have a large striking area. For the touch typist, there are home row identifiers which make it easy to locate the home row without looking at the keyboard. Also, the numeric pad has a home row identifier for easy key location. The familiar layout and enhanced useability of the typewriter area make this an excellent keyboard for the Office System user. On the IBM Enhanced Keyboard, one alternate (ALT) key is placed on each side of the space bar for easy access by either hand. The location of the function keys (F keys) is retained across the top of the keyboard. The function keys are spaced in groups of four to improve selection capability. The cursor control keys are arranged in an inverted T for improved access to the user. The Caps Lock function replaces the Shift Lock to ease entry of upper case characters without changing the shift mode. Consistency across systems is maintained by having identical functions (when available) located in the same position on the keyboard for each supporting system. A consistent keyboard layout makes the transition from system-to-system easier for the user. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL A special non-displayed input mode provides for fields of data to be program-defined so that they will accept data entered from the keyboard without displaying the data on the screen. A Security Keylock prevents modification or display of the data in the display terminal if the key is turned to the "locked" position. These capabilities and the terminal's ability to identify itself to the host program allow customer-supplied security program routines to control access to data and audit of actions. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, for administrative procedures, and for appropriate controls in application systems. If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. For more information on data security controls, see Data Security Controls and Procedures (G320-5649).
