IBM 3194 DISPLAY STATION Announcement Letter Number 186-119 dated June 16, 1986 US - Last Revised on June 16, 1986 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 3194 Display Station is an advanced function, easy-to-read 14" color display station which displays up to 1920 characters. It has a choice of typewriter style keyboards whose ergonomic design contributes to operator usability and satisfaction. Integrated microcode provides additional functions beyond data entry and retrieval. A resident set of utility functions makes use of the 3.5" diskette drive located in the logic element. Multiple sessions (up to two notepads and one to four host sessions, with windowing) and a keystroke record/play function are also supported. RPQs to modify the user interface will be accepted. Planned general availability for the 3194 Model H50 is fourth quarter 1986; for the 3194 Model H20 is third quarter of 1987. 3194-H50, 122-key Typewriter Keyboard - Purchase Price $2,895 3194-H20, 102-key IBM Enhanced Keyboard - Purchase Price $2,895 Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS HARDWARE SUMMARY o Logic Element - Small footprint (14.2" x 13.2" x 3.2"; 14.3 lbs.) - 3270 communications adapter - Integrated 3.5" diskette drive; 720Kb capacity - Security keylock o Monitor - 14" color - Easy-to-read font - 1920-character screen (24 x 80); an additional line is allocated to the Operator Information Area, OIA - 7 colors plus black - Black background o Keyboards - 122-key Typewriter Keyboard (Model H50) - 102-key IBM Enhanced Keyboard (Model H20) o Ergonomic Highlights - Monitor tilt & swivel pedestal - Keyboard slope adjustment CONTROL CODE SUMMARY - Up to two notepads - Keystroke record/play; up to 30K characters - One to four host sessions - Window management (size, move, hide, etc.) - Foreground and window border color selection - Enlarge key - Copy from session to session (all sessions eligible) - Local utility session with functions such as . file transfer (from/to host/diskette) . diskette management (directory display, erase, copy, etc.) . memory dump . patch . trace . pre-defined customization profiles . customization DESCRIPTION The 3194 is a 3270 data stream compatible device for use in a main frame interactive (MFI) environment. The high resolution 14" color monitor supports a 24 x 80, 1920-character screen with an easy-to-read font. It is a high function, alphameric member of the 3270 Information Display System family, offering functional capabilities and convenience features, such as keystroke record/play and multiple host sessions with windowing. These advanced functions are provided by integrated microcode. RPQs will be accepted to modify the user interface. Three default customization profiles are pre-defined, each providing additional function. These environments can be scanned, serially, with a few simple key strokes. An additional keystroke ensures that the selected profile is restored with each subsequent power-on sequence. These user environments can be modified, or additional environments can be defined, through a customization process with the assistance of a DP professional. The record/play function allows storage of up to 30K characters. Using this function, a task requiring repetitive duplicate keystrokes, as might be the case when completing a multi-part form with duplicate information, could be accomplished with minimal keystrokes. A file transfer function, provided by the Utility Session, is available to efficiently transfer data to and from a cooperating host. The Utility Session File Transfer function requires one of the following Host File Transfer Programs at the participating host: o MVS/TSO (5665-311) o VM/SP (5664-281) o CICS Version 1 Release 6 (5798-DQH) The 122-key keyboard (Model H50) offers the operator two sets of Program Function (PF) keys. Operators accustomed to the keyboard arrangement of the IBM 3278 and 3279 displays can use the numeric key pad and adjacent keys as PF keys. Operators familiar with the IBM 3178 and 3179 displays can use the PF keys positioned near the top of the keyboard. The key pad will operate in numeric state by first pressing the numeric lock key. The IBM Enhanced keyboard (Model H20) separates cursor movement keys and system function keys from the numeric pad area and PF keys are separated and repositioned above their equivalent numeric keys across the top of the keyboard. The typewriter style of this keyboard is consistent with other IBM keyboards designed for the office environment. During 3194 and 3174 or 3274 customization, two host interactive modes may be set: o Distributed function terminal (DFT) mode: One to four sessions operating as a 3270 24X80, 1920 character screen via a 3274 with Configuration Support D, Release 64.2 or later, or a 3174 with equivalent support. One physical port is occupied and from one to four logical addresses are allocated. o Control unit terminal (CUT) mode: One session operating as a 3270 24X80, 1920 character screen via a 3174 or 3274. Connection to the 3174 or 3274 is via coaxial cable, IBM Cabling System media, or telephone twisted-pair via IBM/ROLM 3270 Coax-to-Twisted-Pair Adapter.
