They are high-quality black-on-white CRT display stations with improved ergonomics and a distinctive full-screen black-on-white presentation. They are compatible with the IBM 3180 Model 2 and IBM 3197 D Models, and will operate on application programs written for those products. The 3197 W Models can be used with the IBM System/36 and System/38 for entering, editing, and displaying alphanumeric data, and are particularly attractive for use with text applications. The IBM 3197 W Models provide three user-selectable screen formats: o Up to 1,920 characters -- 24 lines of 80 characters each o Up to 3,564 characters -- 27 lines of 132 characters each o In dual address mode, up to 3,280 characters in two split-screens -- 24 lines of 80 characters each and 17 lines of 80 characters each. In addition, each of the above formats provides operator message and status lines. The 3197 W Models may be attached locally to the IBM System/36 and System/38, or remotely through the IBM 5294 Remote Controller. Cable-through is standard with the auto-termination unit provided. An operator-adjustable audible alarm is provided to alert the operator to special conditions. The IBM 3197 W Models have an etched screen which minimizes glare and is resistant to fingerprints. The 3192 W Model printer port has been enhanced to include local screen copy function and a print screen trim option. The printer port emulates IBM workstation printers in alphanumeric characters only (5256 or 4214 Model 2) for IBM ASCII-attached printers (IBM 4201 Proprinter Models 1 and 2, 4202 Proprinter XL, 5201 Quietwriter Models 1 and 2 or the IBM 5202 Quietwriter III printer). The attached printer is addressable from the host (programs and other workstations). See Printer Prerequisites. The dual address capability is controlled in the logic. The prime workstation address is assigned to the display and the second is assigned to either the printer (D-P mode) or display (D-D mode). In D-D mode, two jobs are controlled concurrently in a split display through a "jump key." The low-profile typewriter-style keyboards, with adjustable slope and 24 application-assigned command functions, provide input and control flexibility. Easy-to-use set-up options, provided from the keyboard, allow the operator to utilize a block or underscore cursor, reverse video image option, select cursor blink or non-blink, control audible alarm and clicker volume, display cursor location (row/column), select auto-dim on/off, and other functions. The cable-connected keyboard can be moved and the video element can be tilted and swiveled to change the screen angle for convenience of the operator. The keyboard is thin and its slope can be adjusted by the user to 6 or 12 degrees. A keylock is standard with a total of 100 possible key combinations. Record/play/pause allows the operator to store up to 1,500 keystrokes for later playback. They also attach remotely to these systems via an IBM 5294. Attachment is by the same type of cable as is used to attach an IBM 3196, 3179 Model 2, 3180 Model 2, 3197 C/D Model and other IBM 5250 Information Display System devices. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: During IPL on System/36 Release 5, AUTO CONFIG must be used to configure the 3197 W Model. The IBM 3197 W Model is supported by the IBM System/36 Release 5.1 SSP or the IBM System/38 Release 8 CPF or later compatible releases. The IBM 3197 W Model must be configured to the System/36 as a 3197 D Model or to the System/38 as a 3180. See Limitations below. COMPATIBILITY: The 3197 W Model is data stream compatible with today's IBM 3180 Model 2 and IBM 3197 C and D Model displays in alphanumeric application environments. Personal Computer printer output, using PC Support/36 Release 5 or PC Support/38 Release 8 Virtual Printer (Data Type-4), can be directed to the 3197 W Model attached printer via the System/36 or System/38 with full printer fidelity. (See Limitations.) LIMITATIONS: In addition to the limitations below, see Printer Prerequisites: o Displaywrite/36: The IBM 3197 Model W20/WE0 when attached via the IBM 5294 Remote Control Unit, supports Displaywrite/36 with the 5294 feature code #3621. o The IBM 3197 W Models support the IBM 5201 Quietwriter Printer using 5256 emulation. With 5256 emulation, letter quality print, one font cartridge and either the continuous forms feed device or the optional single drawer sheet-feed device are supported. 4214 emulation may result in unsatisfactory operation for some applications such as Displaywrite/36 and is therefore not supported. Users requiring 4214 emulation should test their specific software application. o RPQs are not available. o 3180 Reverse Image Key is not available. PREREQUISITES: The 3197 W Models attach to the IBM System/36, System/38, or the IBM 5294 Remote Control Unit via IBM Cabling System, twinaxial cable or equivalent, and telephone twisted-pair cable (using the IBM 5299 Terminal Multiconnector/TTPA). PRINTER PREREQUISITES: IBM 5201 Quietwriter Printer - An IBM Quiet (R) Electronic Font Type A is required for the attachment of the IBM 5201 Quietwriter Printer to the 3197 Model W. These fonts are available in a variety of typestyles and pitches. Consult the Supplies Reference Guide for Information Processing Equipment (71K6162 or G570-2098). The 5201 Quietwriter Printer emulates the 5256. With 5256 emulation, the 5201 supports letter-quality print, one-font cartridge, and either a continuous forms feed device or the optional, single-drawer sheet-feed device. IBM 5202 Quietwriter III Printer - For full-character-set support, an IBM Electronic III cartridge in Code Page 850 is required for attachment of the 5202 to the IBM 3197 W Models. Switch number 1 of switch group 2 in the printer should be set to "On" to select the pluggable font cartridge. Switch number 6 in switch group 2 should be set to "On" to have the printer default to draft print mode when powered on. Switch number 1 in switch group 1 should be set to "On" to select character set 2. For information on setting the switches in the printer, see the printer Guide-to-Operations. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: o Adequate site, system and other vendor preparation. o Receipt at receiving dock, unpacking and placement of the unit. o Physical set-up, connection of cables in customer access area, switch settings and checkout. o During initial set-up, to install Repair Identification Tags (RID) on each element (logic, video, and keyboard) of the IBM 3197 W Model. The RID tag is used to identify each element (logic, video, and keyboard) of all element exchange products. The RID tag is used by IBM for service entitlement. Only the type and serial number of the product is stored in IBM's entitlement system. Therefore, the RID tags are attached to the logic element when it is shipped from the factory. The RID tags must be removed from this element and installed on each element during initial set-up. Detail information on where to install the RID tags is contained in the Display Station Set-Up Instruction Manual which is shipped with each IBM 3197 W Model. Refer to the Set-Up Manual for the exact location of the RID tags. o Contacting IBM Service for attachment of the 3197 W Model communications cable to an on-site serviced IBM control unit where customer access area is not provided. o Determination of the required number of spares - The number of spare units is dependent upon the number of the 3197 W Model units the customer has installed, the application requirements, physical locations, and layout. Determination of the required number of spares is a customer responsibility. The customer should be advised to test spares for correct operation before putting them on the shelf. Spares can be ordered as a complete machine or as individual elements. o Using the Problem Solving guide prior to calling for service. o Calling the Service/Exchange Communication Center (S/ECC) on a toll-free number (1-800-428-2569) for service o Customer is responsible for all keyboard modifications. Customers must remove customer-owned keycaps prior to returning a keyboard for exchange or repair service and return the standard layout keyboard to IBM. A standard layout keyboard will be returned to the customer. o Returning security keys to IBM if any exchange service of logic element is required. (If the keys are not returned to IBM, the customer will be charged for the replacement of the security keys and locks on a time and material basis). o Ordering the IBM 3197 Display Station Description Manual (GA18-2544) for site planning and preparation work since it is not shipped with each machine. CABLE ORDERS: IBM shielded twisted-pair cable, twinaxial cable (or equivalent) is required for product attachment. The customer is responsible for installation and maintenance of the cable and associated accessories. Twisted Pair Cable: For proper identification, installation and application of cable and associated accessories, refer to IBM Cabling System -- Planning and Installation Guide (GA27-3361). (GA21-9337). INSTALLABILITY: The IBM 3197 W Models are customer set-up (CSU) machines. IBM 3197 Display Station Set-Up Instructions (GA18-2788) are included with each machine. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The Operator Reference and Problem Solving Guide contain self-test and diagnostic procedures which assist the customer in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced by calling the Service/Exchange Communication Center. FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) STATEMENT: Warning: This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause interference to radio communications. It has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A computing device pursuant to Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference when operated in a commercial environment. The Set-Up Instructions (GA18-2788), User's Guide (GA18-2790), Problem Solving Guide (GA18-2789) are included in the packaging. KEYS: The 3197 W Models are shipped with two keys. If keys are lost, the tumbler assembly must be replaced. This service is available on an hourly service basis. SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL Data security functions provided by the IBM 3197 W Model are non-displayed field control (specified in the attribute byte) and the security keylock. User management is responsible for implementation of these functions. (Note: If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
