IBM 4694 POINT OF SALE TERMINAL MODEL 001 Announcement Letter Number 193-150 dated June 1, 1993 US - Last Revised on June 1, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 4694 Point of Sale (POS) Terminal is a new POS controller/terminal for customers who want basic function and a smaller footprint. The 4694 consists of a single model that can be tailored via features to deliver a variety of controller, terminal, or controller/terminal configurations. The 4694 provides an open hardware platform with an Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus, and a 25-MHz 80386SX microprocessor. Standard with every system unit are 2MB of random access memory (RAM), 32KB of non-volatile RAM, a 1.4MB floppy disk drive, 10 ports for various input/output (I/O) devices, a built-in Ethernet network interface adapter, and two full-size ISA expansion slots. Available system unit upgrades include options for a hard disk drive, video graphics array (VGA) function, Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) capability, and expandable RAM to 16MB on the planar. All of these options can be added to the system unit and still leave both expansion slots free to be used with up to two full-size ISA-compatible feature cards. In addition to the basic PC function provided by the system unit, the 4694 can attach a limited number of I/O devices designed for the retail environment and provide basic POS function. Offered with the hardware, the 4694's POSS/DOS feature provides drivers that enable the POS I/O for a DOS environment. The 4694's I/O devices are modular. This allows configurations to be either partially integrated or distributed, based on the installation requirements. The 4694 uses the same I/O announced for use with the IBM 4693 Point of Sale Terminal. However, as a basic-function solution, the 4694 will operate with a smaller number of I/O than the higher-function 4693. The 4694's open platform is designed to facilitate the use of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) as well as IBM features and attachments. Most of today's PC marketplace is compatible with the ISA format. IBM will provide components that can be used to complete solutions for the majority of our customers. However, with its two RS-232 ports and ISA bus, the 4694 allows customers to utilize non-IBM I/O and feature cards. While not supported by IBM, these hybrid solutions may provide a better fit for the specialized needs of some customers. The 4694 is included in Category A of the Volume Discount Exhibit for IBM Store Systems Products (SSP). Planned Availability Date: July 23, 1993, with the following exceptions: o September 24, 1993, for - National language support (NLS) publications - I/O Integration Kit (feature code 3375) o December 17, 1993, for - Color Video Display -- Distributed (feature code 3914) - Color Video Display -- Integrated (feature code 3910). IN BRIEF . . . o Industry standard design - Investment protection - Industry Standard Architecture - Variety of choices - Standard microprocessor and components - Basic POS and PC function o Small footprint - Designed for small checkstand environment - Flexibility to accommodate a variety of environments o Modular input/output devices - Integrated configurations - Distributed configurations Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION INDUSTRY STANDARD DESIGN The 4694 was designed to utilize industry standard hardware to enable a basic-function platform. Several examples of this include the 4694's use of the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus, the 80386SX microprocessor, Ethernet 10Base-T standard on the base unit, and four PC ports in addition to the six ports for retail I/O. INVESTMENT PROTECTION: The 4694 hardware platform was designed with industry standard components while still providing IBM quality. Its ISA bus provides compatibility with current and future ISA-compatible cards. This ideally positions the 4694 to take advantage of the large selection of basic-function feature cards that are available in this format. VARIETY OF CHOICES: The large number of ISA-compatible feature cards provides customers with more choices. Many customers want greater freedom to pick and choose from a variety of available OEM options. They value this freedom and control. The ISA format provides them this value. STANDARD MICROPROCESSOR AND LAN: Like the ISA bus, the 80386SX microprocessor and the Ethernet 10Base-T local area network (LAN) are widely used standards in the PC industry. The more universal the standard is, the more flexibility provided to the customer. More applications and connectivity options are available for the most popular standards. BASIC POS AND PC FUNCTION: The 4694 provides 10 I/O ports. A PC keyboard port, a mouse port, and two RS-232 ports provide flexibility to operate a variety of PC I/O devices. Four RS-485 ports and two cash drawer ports allow the 4694 to connect a variety of POS devices designed specifically for the retail environment. Additional options provide flexibility for additional POS or PC function. SMALL FOOTPRINT Physically, the 4694 is substantially narrower than 4683, 4684, and 4693 terminals. This will make it more attractive in some environments, but the reduced footprint does place limitations on the 4694's ability to integrate. The 4694 design is such that in all configurations, at least one module must be distributed. SMALL CHECKSTAND ENVIRONMENT: The 4694 system unit is 37 percent narrower than either the 4683 or the 4684. With a distributed cash drawer and a non-video environment that utilizes a Retail POS Keyboard, the system unit becomes the base on which the keyboard, printer, and display can integrate. The result is a clean looking, integrated terminal (cash drawer not inclusive) that is ideal for small checkstand environments. DISTRIBUTED CONFIGURATIONS: The footprint of distributed configurations is a function of how the selected input/output devices are placed in the particular checkstand. TRADITIONAL RETAIL ENVIRONMENTS: For environments where video and/or large keyboards are required, the system unit can be distributed instead of the cash drawer. In this configuration, an optional kit can be utilized to integrate all of the input/output devices onto the cash drawer as the base. The result in this case is a clean looking, integrated terminal (system unit not inclusive) that is suited for checkstand environments less sensitive to footprint. While larger than the small checkstand configuration, this configuration is 10 percent narrower than either the 4683 or the 4684. NOTE: This configuration requires the I/O Integration Kit feature (feature code 3375) which will not be generally available until September 24, 1993. MODULAR INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICES The 4694 was designed to extend still more flexibility in its use of IBM's retail I/O devices. The I/O line has been completely refreshed with a new look and the added functionality of improved modularity. This allows customers to configure solutions that are integrated, distributed, or somewhere in between. In all cases, the result is a clean solution that functions as though it was designed specifically for that customer's chosen configuration. INTEGRATED CONFIGURATIONS: The input/output devices are designed to integrate with either the system unit or an optional kit that allows the I/O to be integrated with the cash drawer. In both of these configurations, the I/O fit together to create an integrated cluster of the I/O most important to that customer's store environment. Either the cash drawer, the system unit, or both, are distributed. DISTRIBUTED CONFIGURATIONS: Through the I/O's unique design, the customer's flexibility is extended to provide the capability to fully distribute any and all I/O. This provides the capability to custom tailor the 4694 environment to suit virtually any checkstand environment by distributing the desired I/O to work with even the most restrictive space environments. OPEN ENTERPRISE o Hardware Bus Architecture - Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) - Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) standard o Disk Operating System Version 5.02 PRODUCT POSITIONING The 4694 Point of Sale Terminal is designed for customers wanting basic POS and PC function on an open architecture platform. Based on this requirement, the 4694 is offered as IBM's basic POS hardware solution. Primary segments that will be served by various 4694 solutions are: o Specialty o General/mass merchandise o Grocery/supermarket o Gas/convenience. If you are focused on maximum performance or growth, the 4694 is probably not the appropriate solution. Solutions built using IBM's performance POS hardware solution, the 4693 Point of Sale Terminal, will better meet the needs of customers interested in function such as 80486 and higher processing speeds, communications that exploit the Micro Channel (R) architecture, advanced graphics, programmable power, and memory retention. The 4694 offers price advantages over the 4683 and 4684 as well as several functional advantages. In addition to the RS-232 ports and the built-in Ethernet communications, the 4694 operates in a DOS environment, and offers pluggable memory up to 16MB. Options such as video, a hard disk drive, and PCMCIA are all supported as well without the need to utilize either of the 4694's two available ISA expansion slots. However, like the 4693, both the 4683 and the 4684 support a larger number of input/output devices than does the 4694. For those environments where such support is not necessary, the 4694 provides a lower priced hardware platform for basic POS solutions.
