The 9507 display is 640 x 480 pixels with 512 colors and is VGA compatible. The 211mm x 158mm viewable area is roughly equivalent to a 12-inch conventional CRT display. The 9507 is a technologically advanced display. The physical characteristics, inherent in the technology, enable it to be used in situations where the power of the desktop is required but the ergonomics normally associated with portables are desired. It is ideally suited for attachment to the PS/2 E, where the maximum advantage of the ergonomic design of each can be realized. ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS AND ENERGY EFFICIENT The PS/2 E has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, and a host of other reviewers, as an environmentally friendly product. The PS/2 E will be considered an Energy Star computer when that program officially announces. The use of recycled material and its low power consuming design, address the concerns of landfill management and pollutants that are a result of generating electric power. The PS/2 E is manufactured with recycled plastics for covers and recycled paper for its packaging and documentation. In addition, these parts and others are later recyclable. The system is designed with a high degree of simplified disassembly to enable this recycling capability. The product design is one that uses similar thermal plastic parts that are coded, via an IBM system, that will better facilitate the recycling capability at the end of life of the product. The PS/2 E, consumes less power than conventional desktop systems. When fully configured and active, the system unit will consume approximately 23 watts of power. In the idle state this power consumption will drop to approximately 16 watts. Included with the system unit are power management utilities that allow the user to set the duration of time for the hard drive motor to shut down when it is not active. This utility provides additional acoustical management as well as power management. When the hard drive motor is stopped the system is silent, making for a user friendly environment. The IBM 9507 Color Display consumes 37 watts of power when active and approximately 17 watts when power managed to an idle state. These two products configured together, when fully active, consume less power than a 60 watt light bulb, generate little heat and produce virtually no noise. REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The PS/2 E design addresses a growing demand for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly products. These solutions allow for product installation in environments that are already constrained by existing building electrical distribution capacities and or UPS devices. The PS/2 E consumes approximately 1/4 of the power of a conventional desktop product. Customers of this product will enjoy a reduction in their utility bills and will also benefit by a host of secondary enhancements including the ability to install more computers per branch circuit. More computers on existing UPS devices or the ability run the products longer on existing UPS devices will consume less of the standby power. The product produces little heat and virtually no noise which allows its installation in working environments that are sensitive to the by-products of normal computers. SMALL FLEXIBLE FOOTPRINT/SILENT OPERATION The PS/2 E system unit is approximately 12 x 12 x 2.5-inch. It is designed to operate in a variety of orientations and environments. It can sit in a normal desktop orientation or when used with its vertical stand, can be placed on the floor or on the desk. Two additional and unique orientations are added to this products capabilities. Wall-mounting with assistance of either a custom fixture to accommodate the system unit and the 9507 Color Display or wall-mounting of the system unit (only) via accommodations in the bottom of the system frame. The product can be installed within a drawer for medialess LAN stations. The PS/2 E is designed to operate (fully configured) silently. No fan resides in this mechanical package and a power management utility is provided to turn the hard drive motor off when it is not active. The only noise that the end-user will experience will be that of the diskette drive or hard file when activated. The PS/2 E uses a 486SLC2 50/25MHz processor and XGA-2 graphics. Its basic performance is extremely competitive with machines its size as well as those much larger. Totally unique productivity attributes like PCMCIA 2.01 remote IPL support and Electronic Lock and Unlock facilities allow PS/2 E installations to exist within the frame work of end-user requirements such as asset protection, and intellectual property protection. In addition, one of the most important attributes is "Plug-n-Play". This design point allows the user to install and/or remove appropriate PCMCIA devices without the need to power down or reconfigure the system. The PCMCIA devices are accessible, front and rear, and when inserted in PCMCIA slot the system recognizes the insertion, interrogates the ID Bit and loads the appropriate driver (resident on the 120MB hard drive). That device is immediately available for the end-user. Devices such as PCMCIA hard drives, solid state devices and FAX/Modems can be installed or removed at anytime. This allows for excellent synergy between desktop computers, desktop and mobile computers and the ability to share PCMCIA devices between multiple uses. The Plug-n-Play (or hot pluggability) characteristics of the PS/2 E give it significant expandability and configurability. To complement the flexible orientations of the mechanical package, its silent operation adds an additional user benefit that addresses environments where noise is undesirable (classrooms, hospitals, reception areas, others). The IBM PS/2 E system unit accommodates four PCMCIA devices conforming to the PCMCIA PC Card Standard Release 2.01. The possible configurations within a PS/2 E are as follows: o Four type I adapters (memory) or o Four type II adapters (devices) or o Two type III adapters (DASD) or o Any combination of the above. Most devices are "hot pluggable" and can be inserted and extracted without removing the systems covers. This is termed Plug-n-Play. Additionally, the PS/2 E provides support for Remote Initial Program Load and the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter (with appropriate software and driver support). A unique feature of the PS/2 E PCMCIA design is an Electronic Lock and Unlock utility. This security feature will physically lock the PCMCIA devices in the slots until a password is entered. This feature provides a level of security that defeats the casual theft of assets and intellectual property. It operates with DOS, Windows and OS/2 operating systems. The IBM PCMCIA Type II Communications Adapter provides users with the flexibility of attaching the PS/2 E system to LAN networks, most popular network operating systems, and to host applications. Refer to Product Announcements 192-212, dated September 15, 1992, for 3270 Emulation, 192-213, dated September 15, 1992, for Token-Ring and 192-214, dated September 15, 1992, for Ethernet. Additionally, IBM provides FAX/Modems, and Solid State Mass Storage Cards. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. ENABLE CUSTOMER COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The PS/2 E supports four Plug-n-Play PCMCIA slots, RIPL, booting and security. These are unique attributes to this system and desktop computers. When the PS/2 E is used in concert with mobile computers a business will be able to share devices between desktop workstations and portable systems. User's will be able to transfer hard drives, solid state files and adapters (such as FAX/Modems) between their PS/2 E and a portable or tablet system. This ability allows the user to instantly migrate data bases, operating system environments and/or demonstration files from the desktop to the mobile system and back again with little effort. When the PCMCIA devices are reinstalled in the PS/2 E, customer databases and files are current and the mobile system is available for another employee to utilize. Transportability, shared resources and security are attributes of the PS/2 E. User's can manage personal data, share it with portables, or transfer it to a to home computer. The PMCCIA adapters, low power consumption and rugged design are key attributes to provide synergy with mobile computers. Businesses that install the PS/2 E will realize improved productivity with the ability to migrate data quickly between the different systems. Security is improved for intellectual property by the electronic lock and unlock support in the PS/2 E. The user can remove the DASD device and lock it up in a desk or safe. ISO AND 9241 This is a standard developed by the ISO to address the following aspects of a display's operation: o Character size, spacing and shape o Character clarity -- the luminance contrast ratio between lit and unlit dots o Screen linearity and "squareness" o Screen image stability - flicker and jitter o Reflections and glare o User controls -- brightness and contrast o Display positioning -- adjustment of direction and angle. The hardware requirements of ISO 9241 are met by the PS/2 14" Energy Saver Color Monitor only when operating in one of the high refresh rate display modes. In addition to having a display capable of high refresh rates and having certain minimum specifications in respect of picture linearity and fast attack/decay on character edges to enable sharp, crisp text, there are additional system-related items to be considered before claiming the visual component of a system is ISO compliant: o Use of a graphics adapter capable of high (= or > 72Hz) refresh rates to provide flicker-free viewing o Use of fonts designed to ISO specifications by both operating system and application software o Software use of color and color mixes to achieve good contrast between text, menus and their backgrounds. This is especially important in windowed environments. Refer to Product Announcement 192-273, dated October 20, 1992, for additional information on the background, intent and scope of the standard. MPR-II 1990:08 This is a guideline developed by the Swedish Board for Technical Accreditation (SWEDAC) to limit emissions (radiation) from workstations. Electric and magnetic fields with frequencies between 5Hz and 2kHz are called extremely low frequency (ELF) fields. Those with frequencies between 2kHz and 400kHz are called very low frequency (VLF) fields. It is these fields the Swedish MPR-II guideline is intended to limit. Sources of these fields include the main power supply (50 or 60Hz) from the wall socket and the circuits responsible for sweeping the electron beam across the face of the CRT. High voltages used within CRTs induce an electrostatic field (ESF) on the surface of the display screen. The MPR-II guideline also requires that this charge is minimized. The levels of these fields emitted by the display meet the Swedish guideline. TCO-91 This is a guideline developed by the TCO to further reduce emissions (radiation) from workstations below the levels set by MPR-II. VESA POWER MANAGEMENT This is a technique proposed to the VESA for adoption as an industry standard. It involves the system unit or graphics adapter card to which the display is connected. The stages towards shutdown are controlled by the state of the H and V sync lines on the incoming video signal as follows: STEP H-SYNC V-SYNC DISPLAY STATUS VESA STATE 1 Active Active Normal Operation On 2 Inactive Active Video Off Instant Restart Standby 3 Active Inactive Video and Scans Off Instant Restart Suspend 4 Inactive Inactive Only Micro active Delayed Restart Off When connected to a suitable system unit, the display can operate down to step 4. At step 3, power consumption is reduced below 30 watts. This meets the power consumption requirements of the EPA Energy Star program. At step 4, power consumption is reduced below 8 watts. This meets the power consumption requirements defined in specification 803299 of NUTEK. 9507 COLOR DISPLAY INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS The 9507 Color Display is designed to conform to the following standards: o ISO (International Organization for Standardization) o MPR. PRODUCT POSITIONING PS/2 E The IBM PS/2 E will comply with the EPA Energy Star program. This design point will allow it to compete with other products when that design point is declared by Local, State and Federal Government contracts. The products attributes of Plug-n-Play, energy efficiency, flexible installation orientations, silent operation, TFT display support and PCMCIA expansion are solutions to many existing customer requirements. Environments such as hospitals, banks, libraries, and executive offices are potential opportunities. Industries that require mobile computing will appreciate the synergy between the PS/2 E and lap tops, portables, tablets and palm tops that support PCMCIA 2.01. The hot pluggability/auto-configurability and the ability to share devices effortlessly allow the PS/2 E the unique opportunity to complement the mobile computing product line (conforming to PCMCIA 2.01). The PS/2 E low power consumption and energy efficient design provide end-users a more cost effective desktop computer solution. Additionally, the product will appeal to customers with environments that are constrained either by existing power distribution capabilities or existing Un-interruptible Power Supply (UPS) capability. Customers with intentions of relocating to new buildings will have a considerably smaller electrification cost by installing systems that consume approximately 1/4 of the power of current desktop solutions. Requirements for asynchronous electronic connection to the PCC BBS include: o 1200 to 9600 baud modem set to eight data bits, one stop bit, and no parity bits o Communication software that supports eight data bit file transfer o A switched telephone line. When connected to the PCC BBS, search for one of the following: DOSDPMV for DOS OS2DPMV for OS/2 . NOTE: The planned availability for the DOS version of these programs is July 1993; and for the OS/2 version it is October 1993. PS/2 E PCMCIA SUPPORT FOR THE WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT PCMCIA Card support: o Communication Cards: - IBM Token-Ring - IBM Ethernet - IBM 3270. These PCMCIA Cards can be used in Windows environments with the following restrictions: o The cards must be inserted and enabled before Windows is loaded, that is, during power on. o These cards will not support hot pluggability. Although, these cards' client device drivers may support hot pluggabilty, most of the communication programs and the protocol stack expect the hardware to be present at all times. The same applies in DOS and OS/2 environments. o The user must use DOS CS aware device drivers for these cards (except 3270, it currently has a Card Services aware driver). o Modem Cards: - IBM Low Speed Data/Fax Modem - IBM High Speed Data/Fax Modem. The following restrictions apply: o Cards must be inserted and enabled before Windows is loaded. o Modems will not support hot insertion. Windows kernel (communications VxD) checks the existence of all available communication ports at its startup. If the cards are not installed during setup, Windows will not recognize the card. o The user must use a DOS CS aware client device driver. PCMCIA SOLID STATE MASS STORAGE CARDS The PS/2 E will support the following cards when available: o Solid State Mass Storage cards in various capacities. There are limitations for the use of these cards. Refer to publications supplied with respective cards. PCMCIA SLOT AND CARD LOCK/UNLOCK UTILITY o OS/2 o Windows Lock/unlock supported under DOS via a command line entry. COMPATIBILITY: Refer to the 9533 Sales Manual pages, or contact your IBM representative, for a complete list of supported features and options and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated periodically. PS/2 E The following versions of OS/2 are compatible when the system unit is used with the diskette drive and hard file only or as a LAN Station. These versions do not support PCMCIA: o OS/2 1.30.1 both SE and EE o OS/2 1.30.2 both SE and EE o OS/2 2.0 including the service pack. Version 1.1 of the adapter software is required for support of Card Services and RIPL (Token-Ring only). Customers with the earlier level support can obtain the latest level electronically in the US via MKTTOOLS, via the National Support Center -- Bulletin Board Service, Directory 32, at 404-835-6600 or via the Personal Systems HelpCenter (R), at 800-PS2-2227. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. PS/2 14" ENERGY SAVER COLOR MONITOR The signal cable of the PS/2 14" Energy Saver Color Monitor is fitted with the same 15 pin D-shell video connector as previous IBM displays. The displays can be driven from existing adapters such as VGA, PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A or PS/2 XGA-2 Display Adapter/A with the appropriate device drivers, and are designed to maintain compatibility with current IBM PC Systems. 9507 COLOR DISPLAY The 9507 Color Display operates in all VGA BIOS modes. LIMITATIONS: PS/2 E The systems support only 2MB, 4MB, and 8MB 70 nanosecond single in-line memory modules (SIMM). With 24-bit addressing, the maximum addressable memory space is 16MB. The system reserves .5KB of memory when BIOS/POST is copied to RAM for execution in systems with less than 16MB of planar memory. The customer will have 15.5MB available when 16MB of memory is installed. Refer to the PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS AND COMPATIBILITY sections for operating systems limitations. When using the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter, or Credit Card Adapter for Ethernet be advised that Version 1.1 of the adapter software is required for support of Card Services and RIPL (Token-Ring only) Customers with the earlier level support can obtain the latest level in a number of methods. Refer to the Compatibility section. PS/2 14" ENERGY SAVER COLOR MONITOR Not all the display modes available run at the high refresh rates that are necessary for flicker-free performance. Display modes at lower refresh rates are available for compatibility. Supported display modes are a function of the attaching system unit. The full range of display modes available with these displays may not be available or supported with all combinations of system units, their operating systems and application software. The number of colors that can be shown in any display mode depends upon the capabilities of the adapter to which the displays are attached. The power management functions of the PS/2 14" Energy Saver Color Monitor are not invoked until initiating signals are received from the attaching system unit and/or graphics adapter. The method used to implement power management in the PS/2 14" Energy Saver Color Monitor follows the VESA proposal. Implementation of this proposal must also be present in the attaching system unit and/or graphics adapter before display power management can be enabled. 9507 COLOR DISPLAY 16 Color Operation -- The 9507 Color Display gives optimum Front-of-Screen performance when using the 16 default colors of the Operating System device drivers. It can also be run in 640x480 256 color mode, although some front-of-screen degradation may be experienced. This degradation can cause some breakup of large areas of uniform color and is dependent on the colors used. It is possible to remove the effects by changing the colors selected. For this reason support for 640x480 256 color mode has not been claimed. Sub-Pixel Defects -- Screens with a maximum of 10 sub-pixel Lit Defects will be considered suitable for customer shipment. This falls well within the requirements of the Flat Panel Addendum (draft) to ISO 9241. It should be noted that there are almost one million sub-pixels on each display panel, and a small number of defects will not be intrusive. Some defects will not be detectable at all. Screen Streaking Effect -- A small number of dither patterns may cause screen streaking and it is recommended that such patterns are not used. The most significant known occurrence is with the "50% GRAY -- DESKTOP" pattern in Windows 3.1.
