The IBM 7585 has a Video Electronics Standard Association (VESA) connector that will accommodate VESA Local Bus I/O adapters. Software Requirements: Operating System Software: Operating system software must be provided for the 7585 Industrial Computer. The primary operating system environments for the IBM 7585 will be DOS Version 6.3 and Microsoft Windows 3.11 or OS/2(R) 2.11. Note: Operating system video graphics driver support is required for the IBM 7585 SVGA graphics capabilities. Although these systems will be compatibility tested with the above operating systems, additional video driver support may be required from the operating system vendor. BIOS: FLASH ROM will support Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) and POST. Plug and Play Support: The IBM 7585 supports the Plug and Play specifications designed to make it easier for users to install, upgrade, and make changes to their Personal Computers. Plug and Play systems are self-configuring. The IBM 7585 has BIOS support and a Plug and Play utility that support this emerging technology for hardware and software. Advanced Power Management: The 7585 supports the Advanced Power Management (APM) Specification, Version 1.1. Advanced Power Management consists of several layers of microcode and software that provide a cooperative environment in which applications, operating systems, device drivers, and BIOS (basic input/output system) work together to reduce power consumption. The 7585 comes with power management features already set up. The Configuration Utility program has a default setting of 30 minutes for automatically initiating power management of the display, processor, and hard disk. BIOS Configuration Utility: The BIOS Configuration Utility program has power management options also. This program implements power-saving functions when Power Manager is not installed. Power Manager: The Power Manager provides two ways for you to control your system. The Power Manager "Menu Bar" on the desktop offers selections for instantly controlling devices such as processor and display. The Power Manager screen saver offers power management selections that take effect after a specified period of inactivity. Menu Bar: The desktop menu bar has a number of power management choices that you can select and implement immediately. The following describe the menu choices available. Help. Instant OFF -- Put all devices in low power state. Display OFF -- To immediately activate the current Windows screen saver program. Hard Disk Off -- To Immediately reduce the power and spin down the hard file. The hard file is still ready to respond. Processor Slow (Fast) -- To immediately slow your processor speed. The processor will run slow until "Fast" is selected. Setup -- To activate the Power Manager Screen Saver's setup function. Power Manager Screen Saver: This screen saver provides automatic power management functions using the standard Windows methods of detecting idle periods. The Screen Saver Setup options provide a list of devices that you can select for power management. Setup also has a field for specifying the amount of idle time necessary to activate the screen saver. Compatibility: The IBM 7585 Industrial Computer is compatible with the IBM Personal Computer, Personal Computer XT(TM), Personal Computer AT, and 7531, 7532, and 7537 Industrial Computers at the BIOS interface level (BIOS not identical), and at most hardware interfaces. The IBM 7585 has been designed to maintain compatibility with existing personal computer software and non-timing-dependent features. Due to the high level of integration, features such as IBM Personal Computer XT and Personal Computer AT memory upgrades and graphics adapters are not supported. The IBM 7585 Industrial Computer supports most software and hardware that is compatible with the latest industry standard architecture (ISA) products. Environmental limits may be imposed if office qualified devices (selected hard drives, removable media devices, and so forth) are installed in or attached to the 7585. The 7585 has not been tested with all IBM and non-IBM features and options. Limitations: The maximum memory address space is 128MB. Of this 128MB memory address space, the system requires 348KB for its use. This leaves the customers with a maximum of 127.6MB of the memory address space for their usage. An additional 128KB of the memory address space is required for system usage if BIOS/POST is copied to RAM for execution. 72-pin (70ns) industry-standard memory SIMMs, 128MB maximum memory. Maximum external (L2) cache memory supported is 256KB. Maximum video RAM supported is 2MB. Maximum of four hard files supported. Maximum IDE hard file size supported is 1GB. Maximum of two diskette drives supported. SVGA DOS/Windows support is on the video driver diskette shipped with the systems. The IBM Token Ring Network Adapter II is designed and recommended to be used in systems with a maximum of 16MB of memory. If all I/O card slots are populated, average wattage of the I/O cards should be limited to 8.5 Watts. Populating all I/O card slots with options that have an average load greater than 8.5 Watts will cause recommended thermal limits in the I/O card area to be exceeded. Environmental limits may be imposed if office qualified devices (selected hard drives, removable media devices, and so forth) are installed in or attached to the 7585. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The 7585 Industrial Computer is designated as customer setup. Setup instructions are shipped with the system. The 7585 is shipped without any DASD installed. DASD may be ordered as an optional feature and is installed by the customer. Setup instructions are shipped with the system. Cable Orders: Required cables are shipped with the system. Installability: The IBM 7585 requires about 30 minutes for installation, including unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other adapters and an operating system, and for installing the system in a user-provided rack. By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and peripherals, and verifies that the voltage switch on the power supply is set to the correct position. Power is then turned on and setup is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self tests. The Configuration Utility resides in ROM. In some instances, the user will be prompted to run this utility, or the user may invoke it by pressing the F1 key during memory POST. The IBM 7585 comes with a universal power supply that operates with either 115 V AC or 230 V AC and has built-in overload protection and surge protection. The IBM 7585 should not be used in the vertical position using certain CD-ROM drives. Consult your CD-ROM drive manufacturer for information on the proper orientation. Problem Determination: After installation, the user should run the system level diagnostic routine as described and provided with the system, and proceed as directed. If a failure is found at initial installation, a message will appear on the screen. If POST is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette via an icon. The trouble-shooting procedures consist of a power-on self test and easy-to-follow trouble-shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element (display, keyboard, or mouse) can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. Packaging: System Unit Carton Content: 7585 System Unit (content as selected) Publication and Binder (U.S. English) (one publication, with a diskette) AC Power Line Cord (default or alternate) Mechanical Mounting Parts and Survey Form Supplies: The system uses 3.5-inch, 4.0MB diskettes. 3.5-inch, 2.0MB diskettes may also be used in the media sensing diskette drive that comes with the system. Security, Auditability, and Control Security and audibility features of this product are: A power-on password to prevent the use of the system by unauthorized persons -- set and change capability The IBM 7585 also uses the security and auditability features of the selected operating system software, and any specific security-related programs that are installed (for example, keyboard password). User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
