IBM ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD October 17, 1994 Announcement Number: 194-352 Document's Table of Contents: Abstract DESCRIPTION PUBLICATIONS TECHNICAL INFORMATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS CHARGES (Corrected on October 20, 1994) Under the Limitations section, the audio and communication features bullet is revised as follows: "As the audio and communication features share the hardware resource of Mwave DSP (Digital Signal Processor), their concurrent usage has some restrictions. For example, you cannot use the MIDI audio capability." Abstract New color models of the ThinkPad(R) 755 family emphasize faster performance and advanced function: integrated Mwave(TM) Digital Signal Processor (DSP), providing stereo audio support, .WAV and MIDI audio support, integrated 14.4K data/fax modem support, full-feature telephony support (speaker phone and telephone answering machine) and dial volume control. Integrated infrared (IR) for wireless data/file transfer and an integrated 5.25-inch CD-ROM are also included. The ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD systems are light-weight, battery- or AC-operated portable notebook computers designed to fit into a briefcase. These computers should appeal to business, education, and government professionals who can benefit from a portable system while traveling or at the office or home. A ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, or 755CD system, combined with any one of the four IBM docking solutions offered by IBM, can easily become your primary personal computer, effectively replacing the desktop system unit. Even without the docking solution, the ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, or 755CD can easily serve as a primary system by virtue of its large color display, high-capacity hard disk drive, large RAM capability, local bus video, 100MHz microprocessor and two Type II or one Type III PCMCIA slot. Host connectivity can be provided by PCMCIA PC cards. With its fast processor (100MHz), large capacity hard disk storage up to 810MB (MB = million bytes), infrared, and DSP, these ThinkPads are the notebook of choice. The 755CE and 755CD feature a large 10.4-inch (picture measured diagonally) Active Matrix (Black Matrix on Array), reduced reflectivity, TFT Color Display with 65,536 simultaneous color support. The ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD systems provide innovative technology and instant productivity with preinstalled software, and the outstanding service and support available are valuable complements. If you need more advanced and integrated multimedia capability -- CD-ROM, audio, and video in combination -- consider the ThinkPad 755CD system solution. The integrated CD-ROM, enhanced video card, stereo speakers, and other features make the ThinkPad 755CD MPC2-compliant, allowing it to compete with much heavier and less integrated multimedia systems. The standard multimedia features of the ThinkPad 755CD set it apart from the rest of the ThinkPad family and competition. Displays: With these new models, IBM introduces new LCD technology, providing larger viewing areas, brighter displays, higher contrast ratios, less glare and higher resolution than other LCDs on the market today. These new models have the 10.4-inch (picture measured diagonally) Black Matrix on Array Thin Film Transistor (TFT) or Dual Scan Super Twist Nematic (STN) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). These are bright Active Matrix and Passive Matrix displays. The TFT Black Matrix on Array (reduced reflectivity) display provides superior viewing capability outdoors and lessens the glare indoors. The TFT panel, with the appropriate display driver, can display up to 65,536 simultaneous colors while the Dual Scan STN can display up to 256 simultaneous colors out of a palette of 4,096 colors. Both displays support simultaneous LCD and external CRT viewing. Processor: At the heart of these systems is the IntelDX4 100MHz microprocessor with an internal cache of 16K and floating point processor providing exceptional performance. Memory: The systems come standard with 8MB RAM, upgradeable to a total of 40MB. This high capacity and fast memory (70ns) can handle almost any application the mobile professional may have to execute and provides data integrity through parity checking. PCMCIA: The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. If additional PCMCIA cards are required, the optional ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge may be placed in the ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE and 755CD UltraBay(TM) providing an additional Type III slot. The UltraBay not only can accommodate this new option, but it can also house the optional 2.88MB diskette drive, TV Tuner, or CDPD module. The CDPD module is not available on the ThinkPad 755CD. IBM PC Card Director software is preloaded on the systems and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software "enables" many PCMCIA cards, allowing the user to simply plug the card in. Refer to the PC Card Director section for more details on this software. Keyboard and TrackPoint III: The keyboard has the familiar ThinkPad layout with a function key capability allowing the user to quickly access system functions like Power Management control. The keyboard lifts up allowing access to the diskette drive bay, hard disk drive bay, and battery for quick upgrades or battery changes. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint(TM) II with improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software. The function of the click buttons has been enhanced by adding "drag and drop" capability. This allows the customer to lock and hold the buttons in without having to keep pushing on them. Storage: The hard drives are customer installable and come in capacities of 340MB, 540MB, or 810MB. They are easily removed by lifting up the keyboard. A user could have multiple "systems" just by installing a different hard drive. Systems could also be shared by users who have their own hard drives but no ThinkPad system units. A 1.44MB diskette drive comes standard with all the systems. All of these systems have the UltraBay standard. The UltraBay is an intelligent bay that switches its pin-out signals to allow the installation of a diskette drive, hard disk drive, PCMCIA cartridge, or CD-ROM (755CD only) in what would normally be just the floppy diskette drive bay. The 755CD ships with a 5.25-inch CD ROM with XA (extended architecture), double speed (150/300kps), in the UltraBay instead of the diskette drive. IBM Mwave Digital Signal Processor (DSP): Features the Mwave MDSP2780, operating at up to 60 million operations per second, that integrates audio, games, music, data/fax modem, and telephony into a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). 44.1KHz MPC-2 16 bit audio with real-time compression Simultaneous audio play and record Digital audio mixing with up to eight open .WAV sources General MIDI-compatible, 32-voice wavetable synthesizer Sound Blaster** support 14.4K data/fax modem Full-featured telephone Answering machine with variable-speed message playback and voice compression Hands-free, full-duplex speaker phone Features set can be enhanced simply through upgrading DSP software Electronic Access to Class II Fax Support: The ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, 755CD Class II Fax support may be retrieved electronically through the IBM Personal Computer Company Bulletin Board System (PCC BBS) sponsored by the HelpCenter in Raleigh, North Carolina. The upgrade software will be available on or before November 30, 1994. The PCC BBS is available 24 hours a day on a toll-call basis with no access charge to the bulletin board. To access the PCC BBS call 919-517-0001. Requirements for the asynchronous electronic connection to the PCC BBS are: A modem that supports 1,200 to 14,400 baud Communication software that supports 8-bit file transfers A switched telephone line The modem should be set to: Eight data bits One stop bit No parity At the PCC BBS main menu, type D THKPDCL2.EXE and press the Enter key. Follow the online instructions to download THKPDCL2.EXE to your hard drive. THKPDCL2.EXE is a self-extracting diskette image file. You will need to have a formatted 1.44MB diskette available when you execute THKPDCL2.EXE from your hard drive. When you execute THKPDCL2.EXE, your ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, 755CD Class II Fax support install disk will be created. To install the Class II fax upgrade follow the instructions in the README.TXT file on the diskette. Infrared: The systems have IR transceivers in front and back for wireless file and data transfer. The ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD have been designed for compliance with the IrDA (Infrared Data Association) IR data link specification version 1.0. The systems support three modes of operation: IBM mode (from 57.6 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps)/HP** mode (from 9,600 bps to 115 Kbps)/Sharp** mode (9,600 bps). Software is preloaded that provides wireless file transfer, file synchronization and clipboard data transfer. With the infrared feature, data can be exchanged with the following systems by using the vendor software packages listed below: Systems Software Omnibook 300** LapLink Remote Access** HP 100LX Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX Sharp Wizard PC Interface Software, 9000 Link for PCs, OZ-990(W)** When using the infrared feature to communicate with these systems, the communications distance may be shorter than when communicating with another ThinkPad 755CE, CSE, or CD, depending on the other system's capabilities. Video: The systems have the VESA local bus support with video acceleration providing exceptional video performance. Audio (Also see DSP): The audio capability on the system board (DSP) and the integrated microphone allow voice annotation and audio capability. The systems are equipped with audio in/out jacks for stereo speakers/headphone and external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located to the rear of the keyboard on the system. Other Features: The use of system memory by BIOS, for example, has been significantly reduced. BIOS uses 96KB of system memory (Video: 32KB, all other: 64KB). The systems have the full complement of ports (enhanced parallel port, SVGA, pointer-keyboard, serial). In addition to these, there is a 240-pin connector that supports the four IBM docking solutions: Dock I -- portable docking with a slot and bay; Dock II -- desktop docking with slots, bays and PCMCIA slots; Port Replicator I -- cable manager with a Type III PCMCIA slot; Port Replicator II -- cable manager only. An RJ11 jack is also included because the DSP provides data/fax modem capability with speeds up to 14.4Kbps. ThinkPad 755CD The IBM ThinkPad 755CD is a high-end member of the ThinkPad 755 family. It has all the advanced functions of the 755CE, plus the following integrated functions: 5.25-inch CD-ROM drive XA (extended architecture), double speed (150/300kps) Multi-session Photo CD Enhanced video card The Enhanced Video card provides for additional video acceleration (interpolative scaling or smoothing)/Composite IN and S-Video IN for still image and motion video capture, and overlay/Composite OUT and S-Video OUT to TV, and both NTSC and PAL are supported. Stereo speakers .5W each Located on the keyboard above the function keys MIDI/joystick port The addition of the above function allows the 755CD to comply with the MPC2 multimedia standard. The 755CD has the same preinstalled software as does the 755CE, with the following additions: Digital Video Producer from Asymetrix to perform video overlay and still image/video capture with the Enhanced Video card ThinkPad Multimedia Library -- an assortment of CD-ROMs to take advantage of the integrated CD-ROM drive. The "Microsoft Home CD Sampler with Custom Windows Entertainment Pack" will be part of the ThinkPad Multimedia Library while supplies last. The CD-ROM drive fits in the UltraBay and is mutually exclusive with the floppy diskette drive. To use the floppy diskette internally, the CD-ROM drive must first be taken out, which is easily done by the customer. To use the internal CD-ROM and the diskette drive simultaneously, the diskette drive external enclosure and one of the four docking solutions is required. Note: The ThinkPad 755CD will not accept the Mobile Communications module (CDPD). This is currently scheduled to be available by December 31, 1994, on the PCC BBS by calling 919-517-0001. The PCC BBS is available 24 hours a day with no access charge to the bulletin board. When using the Redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX to exchange data over an infrared link at 115Kbps, the ThinkPad 755CE/CSE/CD should be configured as the requestor. Telephony and answering machine functions do not support PBX. Video acceleration is not supported when the video output is shown on the TV when using the 755CD. When video playback using enhanced video is being shown on the TV, the video will not show on the TFT display of the 755CD. Video performance will be significantly reduced when operating under the 64K color mode. In some applications, color or brightness differences occur in the displayed image between the LCD and CRT when Enhanced Video is enabled and "Video-in/No video equipment" is selected. Disable Enhanced Video or select "Video-out" in this case. The Wall Mount AC Adapter (40W) (84G2148) is for 110 volts/60 cycle use only. The Mwave MDSP2780 (DSP) does not support Cellular phone connection. Software fax programs requiring Class 2 fax support must obtain the Mwave software update from the PCC BBS by calling 919-517-0001. Availability is currently scheduled for December 31, 1994. The system cannot enter the Suspend/Hibernation mode when the Sound Blaster emulation mode is enabled in a DOS environment. IBM Enhanced Mouse (92G7457) cannot be used with TrackPoint III. When using the IBM Enhanced Mouse, TrackPoint III should be disabled. When the MIDI Joystick port is used, it is recommended that the POWER.EXE and FUELDOS.COM be removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. These files may cause intermittent incorrect movement of the joystick. Continuous use of the CD-ROM or hard disk drive, such as reading long video files, will impact battery life. In the ThinkPad 755CD, the use of the enhanced video function will also impact battery life. The fifth PCMCIA slot cannot be identified by the IBM PC Card Director memory device driver when installing the IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge in the diskette drive bay of the system unit when the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator I or ThinkPad Dock II is attached. The IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge cannot be used with the ThinkPad 360 family even though it will physically fit into the diskette drive bay of the 360 family. The Cellular CDPD Communications Module cannot be used with the IBM ThinkPad 755CD systems. The ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD systems have one memory-slot per system. Using 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB IC DRAM optional feature cards, up to 24MB of system memory is possible. Using the DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) technology, the IBM Memory Module Adapter and the 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB Memory Modules, up to 40MB of system memory is possible. As the audio and communication features share the hardware resource of Mwave DSP (Digital Signal Processor), their concurrent usage has some restrictions. For example, you cannot use the MIDI audio capability. The TV Tuner Pack (not available in EMEA) and Analog-to Digital Video Converter Adapter optional features are only supported on the TFT color models. With the TV Tuner option is installed in the UltraBay (diskette drive bay), do not connect the CRT or TV to the system. TV Tuner output to the CRT or TV is not supported. When the IBM ThinkPad TV-Tuner pack is installed, (not available in EMEA or AP) the system power management function will be affected as follows: When the system enters into suspend mode, the TV-Tuner will be powered off. When the TV-Tuner is in control of the LCD screen, the timer will not work for the suspend hibernation mode. But the hotkey operation (Fn+F4), LID/KBD open/close operation will invoke the suspend mode. The system is designed so the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used. PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services Release 2.1. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services Release 2.1. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended. PCMCIA diagnostics programs usually do not recognize slot number greater than two. To diagnose a suspected faulty card, make sure the PCMCIA card is in one of the PCMCIA slots of the system proper. "Point enablers" usually do not support slot numbers above 2. If using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler, make sure that the card is in the slots on the system proper. Video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video pass-through, VESA bus) is not supported by the ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD and the IBM Docking stations. The IBM 8516 "touch screen" color display and IBM ThinkPad Space Saver Keyboard require the TrackPoint III to be disabled before connecting it to the connector. To disable the TrackPoint III, follow the instructions provided in the ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD User's Guide. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. Password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from "partial" suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II. But you will need to type the correct password to operate. If one of these systems is used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II, then for the comfort and convenience of the user the height of the system should be adjusted or an external keyboard should be used. Suspend Mode Operational Considerations: Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode. Suspend mode shuts off power to the PCMCIA sockets. Note: When using Windows 3.11, ensure that the Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed. Non-disruptive battery exchange allows the user to put the system in suspend mode and exchange battery packs without any loss of data or function. During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60mA at 12V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60mA at 12V. Planning Information Cable Orders: All cables are included with the system. Installability: ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD systems require about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory and other optional features. Problem Determination: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction or error code will appear on the screen. The user should note this information and refer to the User's Guide shipped with the system unit. System units that fail at installation or during a power up sequence will automatically go to the system diagnostics to isolate the failing field replaceable unit (FRU) or refer the user to the service representative for the ThinkPad 755CE, 755CSE, and 755CD. The trouble-shooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostic tests and easy-to-follow trouble-shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. Your name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt. Passwords: A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears: Each time the system is turn on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode A supervisor password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The supervisor password protects the system functions from being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The supervisor password prompt appears: When the hardware configuration is changed A hard disk drive password (HDP) protects hard disk drive data from unauthorized users. Once HDP is set, data on the hard disk drive cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in the hard disk drive, the data remains protected even if the hard disk drive is removed to another system. The HDP password prompt appears: Each time the system is turn on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode The user can use the hook on the hard disk locking mechanism to leash with a user-selected padlock and chain or cable. The user can attach the Kensington lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures the internal devices under the keyboard. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
