Advanced Power Management Power Management: The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems provide a power management system that is almost transparent to the user. The highly advanced power management hardware and software provides longer battery life. Automatic and manual power mode operations (standby/suspend/hibernation) for energy conservation reduces battery consumption. The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems also provide a ThinkPad Features Program, which allows you to control power usage of the computer. The Fuel-Gauge Program shows remaining battery power. While using the external power, the program indicates whether the battery pack is fully charged or still being charged. The ThinkPad Features Program allows you to preset the power management mode for battery operation: low, medium, or high performance. Power modes only affect the computer when the battery pack is in use. You can select settings for component time outs and select the processor speed. The timeout setting shuts off certain components temporarily when no activity occurs for a preset amount of time. The timeout options are: Suspend timer -- The computer is placed in a suspend mode. In suspend mode, the computer is off; however, the information in the memory remains intact. LCD off timer -- The LCD is turned off; however, the display contents remain in the memory. Hard Disk timer -- The hard disk drive motor is turned off. In addition, the user can select the speed of the processor. The computer runs faster at higher speed settings; however, lower speed settings allow the computer to run longer on a battery charge. The processor runs at full speed when busy and slows down when the computer is idle. The following power modes can be initiated automatically or manually. Standby Mode -- Entered for short periods of time, such as when you are having a short conversation Suspend Mode -- Entered when you are going to be away from the computer for short periods of time Hibernation Mode -- Entered when you leave your office but return the following day PRODUCT POSITIONING The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE performance models round out the ThinkPad 360 family line of competitively priced full-function notebook computers. Duration of remaining power (hours) only appears when the ThinkPad 750 NiMH Battery Pack is used. Battery discharge function of ThinkPad features is not supported. Internal modem is turned off when ThinkPad CDPD module is installed. Communication function of CDPD module, modem PC card, or external modem unit may be used for data/fax transmittal. The internal IBM modem card is not available in all ThinkPad 360 models in all countries. System does not enter suspend or hibernation mode while the internal or PCMCIA modem option is in busy status. Electrical specification of Travel AC Adapter (wall mount) (30W) input is 100-125 V AC. Socket type is 3-pin for U.S. and Canada wallet plug. In a country where the AC voltage exceeds 125 V AC, use optional 40W (49G2165) or 50W (66G3541) AC adapter. Total memory capacity you can obtain by using the IC DRAM cards is 4MB, 6MB, 8MB, 12MB, or 20MB. Parity memory function is not supported. Modem support for the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems and the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I are provided through the internal modem card (if supplied by IBM), or external modem attachment to the RS-232 serial port (rear), or a PCMCIA PC optional feature card utilizing the PCMCIA slot that can accommodate two Type II or one Type III PCMCIA cards. The internal IBM modem card is not available in all ThinkPad 360 models in all countries. The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems and the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I conform to the PCMCIA PC Card Standard release 2.01 and the PCMCIA Card and Socket Services Specification release 2.0, dated November 1992. The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference, and in some cases, only one communication card may be able to be used. PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended. Video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video pass-through, VESA Local Bus) is not supported by the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE and the IBM ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. The TV Tuner Pack and Analog-to Digital Video Converter Adapter optional features are not supported on the ThinkPad 360CSE. If internal audio card is installed and the audio device driver is disabled, periodic noise will be heard with some applications (such as Storyboard(TM) Live). To avoid the noise, it is recommended to enable the audio feature (audio feature is enabled by the default setting): Enable the audio device by PS2.EXE (DOS) or ThinkPad Features Program (Windows 3.1, OS/2). Install the audio feature by following the instructions "Installing the Audio Device Driver" in the User's Guide. Note: The internal IBM Audio card is not available on all IBM ThinkPad 360 models in all countries. The IBM 8516 "touch screen" color display requires the TrackPoint II to be disabled before connecting it to the external display connector. To disable the TrackPoint II, follow the instructions provided in the IBM ThinkPad 360 family User's Guide. High-performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. High Speed PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem V.32bis data compression is limited by applications that utilize the BIOS controlling the serial port. Data compression for applications that do not bypass the BIOS is limited to 19.2Kbps. Many applications bypass the BIOS; therefore, they allow data compression approaching the theoretical limit of 57.6Kbps or four times the data compression. America Online, PRODIGY, FaxWorks, and Lotus cc:mail, e-mail for Advantis Network will not run without an appropriate modem. If a ThinkPad 360CE or 360CSE system is used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II, for the comfort and convenience of the user, the height of the system should be adjusted or an external keyboard should be used. The HDD password (HDP) is not supported when it is installed in the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. Remove the hard disk password while it is installed (or re-installed) in the computer, then use it with the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. A PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) installed in the slot of the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or ThinkPad Dock II PCMCIA slot (slot number three or four) cannot be used with point enabler. Dual display mode is not supported when IBM 9515/9517/9518 displays are attached to the ThinkPad 360CE. Lines may extend across the LCD screen. Set the display mode to "CRT," and watch the CRT display and not the system LCD display. Use the built-in microphone of the IBM PCMCIA Audio Adapter if the external microphone gain is not sufficient. To play back MIDI audio in a Windows environment, do either of the following: Disable Card Service and Socket Service software by following the instructions supplied with the IBM PCMCIA Audio Adapter. Use Windows VGA display driver instead of the ThinkPad SVGA display driver. Planning Information Cable Orders: All cables are included with the system. Installability: The ThinkPad 360CE or 360CSE system requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory, an operating system, and other features. Problem Determination: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction or error code will appear on the screen. The user should note this information and refer to the User's Guide shipped with the system unit. System units that fail at installation or during a power up sequence will automatically go to the system diagnostics to isolate the failing FRU or refer the user to the service representative for the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE. The trouble-shooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow trouble-shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions.
