RS/6000 Notebook 860 is designed to maintain compatibility with standard PCMCIA adapters. For an industry-standard PCMCIA adapter to work in these systems, an associated device driver is required on the specified operating systems. Limitations RS/6000 Notebook 860 may not meet the requirement of Safety and EMC in Korea. When a secondary hard disk drive adapter is installed in the CD-ROM drive bay, a CD-ROM drive cannot be used. The keyboard is an integral part of the system. It cannot be interchanged as can other RS/6000 keyboards. Key caps cannot be exchanged. The Keyboard/Mouse Y connector (#8282) is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the keyboard/mouse port. When running AIX with a tablet instead of the TrackPoint III in the AIXwindows environment, execution of rmdev -1 mouse0 at the command line is necessary before starting the AIXwindows environment. Audio support under AIX requires Ultimedia(R) Services Version 2.1.5, or later. The following functions are supported/implemented with the operating system environment: Motion video capability in GT20 Graphics Adapter Video out function Audio functions Power management functions Suspend/hibernation mode Removal/installation of PCMCIA card during power-on state 1.2MB mode of diskette drive PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Point enablers may interface with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environment is recommended. When two Type II PCMCIA communications cards are installed, cable interference may allow only one card to be used. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: RS/6000 Notebook 860 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup publications are available in the User's Guide that is shipped with the system. Cable Orders: Feature number 8212 (Keyboard/Mouse Y connector) is required when customer connects external keyboard. Token-Ring Auto 16/4, feature number 8040, includes attachment cable (approximately 3 m) with RJ-45 connector to STP wall outlet and Data I/O STP connector for connection to STP wall outlet. Ethernet 10Base2, feature number 8020, includes media access module with cable. Ethernet 10BaseT, feature number 8030, includes an attachment cable (approximate 3 m) with an RJ45 connector. Data Fax Modem feature number 8080 includes PCMCIA to RJ11 cable and coupler for two RJ11 male connectors. Installability: RS/6000 Notebook 860 requires less than an hour for installation. Installation includes unpacking, installing battery, connecting the AC adapter, and powering on the system. Additional time may be required to install PCMCIA cards and other features. Security, Auditability, and Control RS/6000 Notebook 860 provides the following features to help protect the hardware inside the system and the information stored on the hard disk drive: Locking Lever With a chain or cable connected to desk or table, the locking lever helps prevent removal of the system.
