SCREEN READER VERSION 1.1 Announcement Letter Number 289-578 dated October 24, 1989 US - Last Revised on October 24, 1989 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability Screen Reader (TM) Version 1.1 is a replacement for the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Screen Reader Version 1.0. It provides a user interface to the IBM Personal Computer or Personal System/2 that enables a blind or visually impaired user to hear screen information. Screen Reader software consists of a terminate and stay resident (TSR) program, utility program, special profiles, and a compiler. Screen Reader hardware consists of a keypad that attaches to the pointing device port on a PS/2 and an adapter to attach the keypad to an IBM Personal Computer. It is compatible with and transparent to applications, including terminal emulators and networks. Screen Reader controls voice output to OEM text-to-speech synthesizers attached to the serial port and runs with IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 3.3 or later. The Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter is a personal computer family adapter that accepts input from the Screen Reader Keypad and passes it along to the Screen Reader Version 1.1 program. The user presses keys on the keypad to hear screen information and control voice output from the Screen Reader. Screen Reader Version 1.1 runs with both PS/2 and any IBM Personal Computer that contains a fixed disk drive. Expanded Memory Support -- Screen Reader Version 1.1 will place a portion of itself into expanded memory if the system is equipped with expanded memory. Product Documentation in Four Types of Media -- Screen Reader Version 1.1 is shipped with documentation in print, online, and on audio cassettes. Braille documentation is available separately. Special Profiles -- Special profiles for some of the most-used applications are shipped with Screen Reader Version 1.1. They provide for automatic speaking of messages and screen boundaries around pop-up and pull-down windows. Profile Access Language and Compiler -- A profile access language is provided with Screen Reader Version 1.1, so that customers can create and compile their own special profiles. An OEM text-to-speech synthesizer is also required. The Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter is needed for operation on an IBM Personal Computer. It requires one half-slot, uses interrupt 7 and can not be used in slot eight of the 5160. The Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter may not be used with the General Purpose Interface Adapter (GPIB), (6451503). It will operate in any of the following IBM Personal Computer Models: o 5160 - Except the PC XT/370 o 5162 o 5170 - Except the PC AT/370. It requires a short slot and can not be used in slot eight of the 5160. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Screen Reader Version 1.1 requires DOS 3.3 or later. LIMITATIONS: The Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter can not be used with the IBM General Purpose Interface Bus Adapter, (6451503). USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: The Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter addresses numerous customer requests and satisfies fully the personal computer requirements submitted by the Screen Reader User Group. Conversion programs are supplied for updating message and text-to-speech files. Version 1.0 profiles will have to be recompiled with the Version 1.1 compiler and instructions supplied. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must provide at least the minimum hardware and software environments in which the Screen Reader Version 1.1 will operate. The customer must also install Screen Reader Version 1.1 programs and adapter. The Adapter requires at least a short slot in the 5160, 5162, or 5170. The cable that connects to the Screen Reader Version 1.1 Adapter is provided with Screen Reader Version 1.1 for the IBM Personal Computer package. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: A test program and documentation are provided with the Screen Reader Version 1.1. INSTALLABILITY: Message tables and text-to-speech files may be converted from Screen Reader Version 1.0. Version 1.0 profiles may be recompiled using the Version 1.1 compiler.
