IBM ThinkPad 755CD Pentium Models Announcement Letter Number: A95-1025 Document's Table of Contents: ABSTRACT IN BRIEF... DESCRIPTION Key Technologies Features Common to all Models Competitive Positioning Preloaded Software New Options Publications Education Support Security Features Security, Auditability and Control ORDERING INFORMATION TERMS CHARGES Allowance and Discounts ABSTRACT The new ThinkPad 755CD models push multimedia notebook technology to new heights adding Intel Pentium 75MHz performance and high capacity 810MB or 1.2GB hard disk drives to these complete multimedia solutions for the road. For mobile users who take multimedia presentations out to smaller groups, or who use separate projection systems when presenting to large groups, the ThinkPad 755CD is the multimedia notebook of choice. The ThinkPad 755CD is a complete, MPC2-compliant travelling multimedia machine with a removable double-speed CD-ROM, standard stereo speakers, and hardware-assisted software motion video acceleration for smooth, realistic full-screen video playback. Standard video-out port for displaying Think Pad presentations on a colour TV and standard video-in port for capturing still images or video clips to create impressive presentations. IN BRIEF... DESCRIPTION Key Technologies The new ThinkPad 755CD models are new additions to the IBM ThinkPad family offering advanced function across all areas of the system. Integrated CD-ROM Drive The integrated 5.25-inch CD-ROM drive is an XA (extended architecture) double-speed (150/300Kbps) drive with multi-session Kodak Photo CD compatibility. Display These 755CD models have a 10.4" (maximum viewable area when measured diagonally) Black Matrix TFT with VGA (640x480) resolution and can display up to 65,536 simultaneous colors. The Black Matrix display has a special coating which helps reduce reflectivity and provides superior viewing capability outdoors and indoors. The systems also have VESA Local Bus support with video acceleration providing exceptional video performance. Processor - Innovative 'Heat Pipe' Design These systems have a Pentium 75MHz processor and also incorporate 256KB of L2 cache to enhance the total system performance. The 755CD systems also incorporate an ingenious method of cooling the ThinkPad given the heat generated by the high-performance Pentium 75MHz processor without using heavy, large fan mechanisms. A 'Heat Pipe' fits around the processor in a 'horse shoe' shape and acts as a superb heat transporter. It contains a liquid medium which evaporates while absorbing latent heat around the processor card. Heat is moved at near sonic speed from one end of the Heat Pipe to the other, away from the processor card. Once there, the 'steam' is cooled down, the heat is dissipated, and the liquid continues the cycle by returning to the processor end in a process similar to an air conditioner. Memory These systems are designed to use non-parity memory. The systems have 8 MB of RAM standard and are upgradeable to a total of 40MB using DIMM Memory Modules and a DIMM Memory Module Adapter. IC DRAM Memory Modules can also be used to expand the memory. IBM Media Processor The IBM Media Processor (Mwave MDSP2780 operating at up to 60MHz) integrates audio, games, music, data/fax modem and telephony capability into these ThinkPad systems. It has the following features: o 44.1KHz MPC-2 16-bit audio with real-time compression o Simultaneous audio play and record o Digital audio mixing with up to eight open .WAV sources o General MIDI compatible, 32 voice wavetable synthesizer o Sound Blaster support o 14.4K data/fax modem o Full-featured telephone o Answering machine with variable speed message playback and voice compression o Hands-free, full-duplex speakerphone o Features can be enhanced simply through upgrading DSP software The audio capability and integrated microphone allow voice annotation and audio capability. The systems are equipped with audio in/out jacks for stereo speakers/headphones and external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located to the rear of the keyboard on the system. Infrared The systems have IR transceivers in front and back for wireless file and data transfer. Their design complies with the IrDA (Infrared Data Association) IR data link specification version 1.0. The systems support three modes of operation: o IBM mode (from 57.6 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps) o HP mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps) o Sharp mode (9600 bps) Software is pre-loaded to provide wireless file transfer, file synchronization, and clip board data transfer. With infrared, data can be exchanged with the following systems using the vendor software packages listed below: -System -Software -Omnibook 300 LapLink Remote Access -HP 100LX Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX -Sharp Wizard PC Interface Software, 9000 Link for PCs Features Common to all Models TrackPointTM III The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint II with improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software. The function of the click buttons has been enhanced by adding "drag and drop" capability. This allows the customer to lock and hold the but tons in without having to keep pressing them to drag objects on the display. The keyboard has the familiar ThinkPad layout with a Function Key allowing the user to quickly access system functions like Power Management control. The keyboard also lifts up allowing access to the UltraBayTM (diskette drive bay), hard disk drive (HDD) bay, and battery pack for quick upgrades or batter y changes. PCMCIA The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I or two Type II, or one Type III PC card. If additional PCMCIA cards are required, the optional ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge may be used in the ThinkPad 755CD UltraBayTM providing an additional Type III slot. The UltraBay cannot only accommodate this new option, but it can also use the optional TV Tuner. IBM PC Card Director software is also pre-loaded on the systems and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, version 2.1. This software "enables" many PCMCIA cards allowing the user to simply plug the card into the PCMCIA slot. Storage The hard disk drives are customer installable and optional capacities of 540MB, 810MB, or 1.2GB are available. They are easily removed by lifting up the keyboard. A user could have multiple "systems" just by installing a different hard disk drive. Systems could also be shared by users who have their own hard drive, but no ThinkPad system unit. A 1.44MB diskette drive is standard with all systems. The diskette drive plugs into the UltraBay which is an intelligent bay which switches its pinout signals to allow the installation of the diskette drive, or PCMCIA cartridge. Limitations o Some special effects of the "Presentation F/X Pro", such as Zoom and Highlight, can prevent the display of motion video on the ThinkPad 755CD. o The OS/2 version of Mind Path Presentation F/X Pro is available. Information can be obtained from Mind Path Technologies Inc at 1-800-736-6830 (in the USA) or 214-479-1564 (outside the USA), or from the IBM PCCo BBS in Raleigh at 919-517-0001. o Either the Mind Path IR remote controller device driver or the IBM IR device driver can be enabled at any time in the Windows SYSTEM.INI file. It is necessary to disable the Mind Path IR remote controller device driver when the ThinkPad IR port, or an application which uses the COM1 port for data transmittal, is used as this port is used by the Mind Path Remote Controller. In the infrared panel of the Mind Path Presentation F/X Pro setup program, click the "off" radio button in the infrared box to disable the IR remote controller and enable the IBM IR driver. To use the remote controller, click on the ThinkPad Internal radio button. o If the ThinkPad enters suspend mode while a video is playing using Video for Windows, Presentation F/X Pro and the Mind Path Remote Controller, the ThinkPad may not resume properly. Close the Presentation F/X Pro software prior to suspending the system, if a video is playing. o Some options or applications may use the COM1 port. IBM OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM1 port is already in use. Only one such option or application using COM1 (e.g. communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a time. For example, the Mind Path IR Remote Controller uses the COM1 port. This Controller must be disabled to use another application that also uses COM1. o The OS/2 Warp Fixpak XR0W005 is required for audio, modem, and printer support if OS/2 Warp needs to be reinstalled. o Fixpak XR_A087 is required for audio, data/fax modem, and telephony functions under OS/2 2.11. o To install OS/2 (2.11, OS/2 for Windows or OS/2 Warp) on a ThinkPad 755CD from CD versions requires the external diskette drive enclosure (p/n 66G3618) and any one of the following docking options are required; Port Replicator Model I, Port Replicator Model II, Dock I, or Dock II. o The 640 x 480 x 65,536 colour driver is available in IBM OS/2 Warp Version 3.0. The 65,536 colour display driver for OS/2 2.11or OS/2 for Windows can be obtained from the IBM OS/2 Bulletin Board. o The MIDI/Joystick Port on the 755CD is not replicated on ThinkPad Docking Stations and Port Replicators. The port is not usable when these options are attached. o Infrared functions through Puma TranXit applications and IBM IR device drivers for Windows have the following limitations under WIN-OS/2 sessions of OS/2 2.11, OS/2 for Windows or OS/2 Warp. Only HP and SHARP modes work with a lower speed (up to 38.4 kbps). The IR functions for native OS/2 sessions are scheduled to be available by June 30, 1995 on the PCCo BBS. o When using the Redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX, the ThinkPad 755CD should be configured as the requestor to exchange data at 115 kbps. o Installation of the software update named WIN311.ZIP is required to use WIN-OS/2 when OS/2 for Windows is used under Windows 3.11. This is currently available on the IBM PCCo BBS. o Telephony and Answering machine functions do not support PBX. o Video acceleration is not supported when the video output is shown on a TV. o When video playback using enhanced video is being shown on a TV, the video will not show on the 755CD display. o Video performance will be reduced when operating in the 64K (65,536) colour mode. o In some applications, there could be colour or brightness differences in the displayed image between the LCD and CRT when Enhanced Video is enabled and "Video-in/No video equipment" is selected. Please disable Enhanced Video or select "Video-out" in this case. o The Mwave MDSP2780 (DSP) does not support cellular phone connection. o The system cannot enter Suspend or Hibernation mode when the Sound Blaster emulation mode is enabled in a DOS environment. o IBM Enhanced Mouse (p/n 92G7457) cannot be used with the TrackPoint III. When using the IBM Enhanced Mouse, the TrackPoint III should be disabled. o When the MIDI/Joystick port is used, it is recommended that POWER.EXE and FUELDOS.COM be removed from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. These files may cause intermittent movement of the joystick. o Continuous use of the hard disk or CD-ROM drive, such as reading long video files, will impact battery life. o Use of the Enhanced Video function will impact battery life. o The fifth PCMCIA slot cannot be identified by the IBM PC Card Director memory device driver when installing the IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge in the UltraBay of the ThinkPad when the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or ThinkPad Dock II is attached. o The IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA Cartridge cannot be used with the ThinkPad 360 products even though it will physically fit into the diskette drive bay on those products. o In Japan, the RI (Ring Indicator) resume is not supported by the PCMCIA Push POP Modem (14.4K data/fax), which is an option for Japanese models. o The CDPD Mobile Communications Module cannot be used with the IBM ThinkPad 755CD systems. o As the audio and communication features share the same hardware resource (the Mwave DSP), their concurrent usage has some restrictions. For example, when you are using any of the communication features, you cannot use the MIDI audio capability. o The ThinkPad 755CD systems have one memory slot per system. Using 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB IC DRAM options, up to 24MB of system memory is possible. Using the DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) technology - the IBM DIMM Adapter and the 4MB, 8MB or 16MB DIMM Memory Modules - up to 40MB of system memory is possible. o The system is designed so that a customer can install or remove a PCMCIA card without turning the system off, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used. o PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Card and Socket Services Release 2.1. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Furthermore, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Card and Socket Services Release 2.1. Additional customer testing in their specific environment is recommended. o PCMCIA diagnostics programs usually do not recognize a PCMCIA slot number greater than two. To diagnose a suspected faulty PCMCIA card, make sure the PCMCIA card is in one of the PCMCIA slots of the ThinkPad system unit. o Point Enablers usually do not support slot numbers greater than 2. If using a PCMCIA card with a Point Enabler, make sure that the card is in one of the slots of the ThinkPad system unit. o Video capture adapters that require VGA pass-through (video pass-through, VESA bus) are not supported by the ThinkPad 755CD and the IBM Docking stations. o The IBM 8516 "touch screen" colour display and IBM ThinkPad Space Saver Keyboard require the TrackPoint III to be disabled before connection. To disable the TrackPoint III, follow the instructions provided in the User's Guide. o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector (p/n 54G0441) is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external mouse port. o The password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from "partial" suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II. The correct password must be entered in order to resume. o If the ThinkPad 755CD system is used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or Dock II, then for the comfort and convenience of the user, the height of the system should be adjusted or an external keyboard should be used. Suspend Mode Operational Considerations Do NOT remove or install PC cards during suspend mode. Suspend mode turns the PCMCIA socket power off. Note: When using Windows 3.11, ensure the Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed. Non-disruptive battery exchange allows the user to put the system in suspend mode and exchange battery packs without any loss of data or function. During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60mA at 12V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60mA at 12V. Supported Products The IBM ThinkPad 755CD systems are designed to be compatible with the following peripherals and software products. Other peripherals may also work, but have not been tested by IBM. The personalized name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps if the ThinkPad misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system non-volatile memory and is displayed with the password prompt. Passwords A Power-on Password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears: o Each time the system is turned on o When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode by opening the LCD of the computer or by pressing the Fn key. If the return to normal operation is caused by the timer or an incoming call through modem, the password prompt does not appear. The LCD remains blank until the correct password is entered. A Supervisor Password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The Supervisor Password protects the system functions from being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The Supervisor Password prompt appears: o When the hardware configuration is changed. The Hard Disk Drive Password (HDP) is a feature of the systems. It is used to protect hard disk drive data. Once the HDP is set, data on the hard disk drive cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Since the HDP is stored on the hard disk drive, the data remains protected even if the hard disk drive is moved to another system. The HDP password prompt appears: o Each time the system is turned on o When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode. Physical Security The user can use the hook on the hard disk drive locking mechanism to leash with a user selected padlock and chain or cable. The user can attach a Kensington MicroSaverTM lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures the internal devices. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
