Memory The ThinkPad 365X/XD systems are designed to use non-parity 64-bit EDO SO DIMM memory. 8MB of memory is standard, but can be expanded to a maximum of 40MB. This is a new type of memory and only the IBM ThinkPad 64 bit 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB EDO SO DIMMS 3.3V, non-parity memory options or equivalent announced with the 760EL family systems can be used. This new memory cannot be used with previously announced 365, 755, or 760 IBM ThinkPads. An internal slot is provided for additional Memory Modules as standard with the systems. One 64 bit Memory Module(s) of 3.3 volt, non-parity technology can be installed in the system for memory expansion. Keyboard and TrackPoint III The keyboard has the familiar 85-key layout of an IBM ThinkPad with a function key in the lower left corner enabling quick access to the following system functions: - Battery power status and display - Standby/Suspend/Hibernation - System Set-up Screens - Power Management The keyboard lifts up allowing access to the HDD bay and battery for upgrades or battery changes. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint(TM) II with improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software. The "drag and drop" function of the click buttons is enhanced. You can lock and hold the buttons in without having to keep pushing on them. Infrared The system has an IR transceiver for wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 365X/XD is designed to be compatible with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link specification Version 1.0. The system supports the following mode of operation: o IrDA 1.0 mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps) Preinstalled software provides wireless file transfer, file synchronization, and clipboard data transfer. With the infrared feature, data can be exchanged with any system, accessories, or PDAs supporting the same specifications and data transfer speed. May require separate purchase of the appropriate hardware. When using the infrared feature to communicate with this system, the communications distance may be shorter than when communicating with other ThinkPad systems, depending on the capabilities of the other systems. Video The ThinkPad 365X/XD systems have PCI bus support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance. Common Features (to all models) PCMCIA The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I or two Type II, or one Type III PC card. IBM PC Card Director software is pre-installed and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software enables many PCMCIA cards allowing the user to simply plug in many different PCMCIA cards. PC Card Director with Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver: PC Card Director helps get status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in the system. In addition, in OS/2 and Microsoft Windows, PC Card Director can register an application program for PCMCIA cards and execute them automatically. Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. Supported PCMCIA cards by Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the Supported Products section. Storage The customer-upgradeable hard drive is 810MB or 1.08GB standard, depending on model. Optional 810MB and 1.08GB hard disk drives are available. A 1.44MB diskette drive (FDD) ships with all ThinkPad 760 systems. The 365XD comes with an integrated 5.0-inch CD-ROM, 4X-speed (150/600 Kbps), with an externally attached diskette drive. The FDD is shipped with the system. Audio o Supports Sound Blaster** Pro-compatible applications The system is equipped with jacks for external stereo speakers or headphone, and external microphone. A separate slide volume control is located to the rear of the keyboard on the system. Other Features The system has the full complement of ports --enhanced parallel port, SVGA (external display), pointer-keyboard-keypad, and serial. An additional connector supports the IBM 365 port replicator. Security Features Standard Security Features Electronic Personalization Electronic Personalization is like a name tag on the ThinkPad. The personalized name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps if the ThinkPad misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system non-volatile memory and is displayed with the password prompt. Passwords A Power-on Password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears: o Each time the system is turned on o When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode by opening the LCD of the computer or by pressing the Fn key. If the return to normal operation is caused by the timer or an incoming call through modem, the password prompt does not appear. The LCD remains blank until the correct password is entered. A Supervisor Password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The Supervisor Password protects the system functions from being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The Supervisor Password prompt appears: o When the hardware configuration is changed. The Hard Disk Drive Password (HDP) is a feature of the systems. It is used to protect hard disk drive data. Once the HDP is set, data on the hard disk drive cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Since the HDP is stored on the hard disk drive, the data remains protected even if the hard disk drive is moved to another system. The HDP password prompt appears: o Each time the system is turned on o When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode. Physical Security The user can attach a Kensington MicroSaverTM lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures the internal devices. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. For example, PC DOS 6.3, OS/2 2.11, Microsoft Windows 3.0, MS DOS 6.0 etc.. Compatibility The ThinkPad 365 family systems contain BIOS/Easy Setup/Diagnostics in their Flash ROM and also provide a graphical user interface to set up the system and power management features for OS/2 and Windows users. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT, Personal Computer AT, and the PS/2 family. Limitations: o System audible alarm will not sound under some setup modes. It can be enabled by using ThinkPad Features program. o I/O Port Addresses for Audio and Token Ring conflict with each other. When Token Ring is used, either Audio or Token Ring I/O Port Address needs to be changed for proper function. o External FDD of ThinkPad 365C/CS/CD/CSD/E/ED does not work on ThinkPad 365/X/XD. o External CRT which supports only VGA resolution can not be installed if display mode is both LCD and CRT because display port always has SVGA signal as long as LCD screen is on. o These systems support PCMCIA PC Cards that draw a maximum of 2.64 Watts (0.8A at 3.3VDC). o Enabling I/R on the host system during a co-sessions host session is not supported. o Microsoft NT Workstation V3.51 - the limitations, tips and techniques, and device drivers may be obtained, at no charge from IBM, from the PC Company BBS at (919) 517-0001 (Toll call). Also, customers with access capability, can obtain it from the Internet at FTP.PC.IBM.COM and from the ThinkPad Forum on CompuServ. o Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive, such as PCMCIA Type III drive. o A suspend/resume operation during a modem application in the Windows DOS box may cause the application to hang. The modem application should be closed before entering a suspend. o A suspend/resume operation during audio recording may result in unexpected results. Audio recordings should be stopped before entering suspend. o When using Windows 95 or OS/2 Warp Version 3, a suspend/resume operation during AVI file, MIDI, WAV, or other audio feature operation, may cause an audio/video synchronous problem or the application to hang. The application should be closed before entering a suspend. o The 32-bit disk access driver for Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in the preloaded utilities shipped with the system can only be installed in a directory named "Windows." If the "Windows" directory has been renamed, for example WIN311 or WFWG311, this driver cannot be installed by the utilities diskette. o Some optional features or applications may use the COM2 port. OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM2pport is already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses the COM2 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a time. o The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video support for Indeo**-format video file playback functions. o When using the redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an infrared link at 115 Kbps, the ThinkPad 365XD should be configured as the requestor. o At 800 x 600 resolution, the 72Hz refresh rate is not supported if 64K color is selected with an external Display (CRT). o IRQ for Sound Blaster Pro is 5 or 7 only. o Continuous use of the HDD drive and/or CD-ROM drive, such as reading long video files, will impact battery life. o The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used. o PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended. o In text mode of DSTN models, image will be shown in full screen only. o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. o In case of DSTN LCD model, screen in text mode, such as DOS or OS/2 full screen, is displayed in extended format. Suspend Mode Operational Considerations o Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode. o When using Windows 3.11, ensure that the Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed. o System should be either in hibernation or "off" when exchanging battery. o During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 100 mW at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.
