FOR SELECTED IBM PRODUCTS 393-020 IBM PROCESSOR GROUP 90 AND 100 GRADUATED CHARGES SYSTEM/370 AND SYSTEM/390 ARCHITECTURE BASED SYSTEMS PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENTS 193-011 IBM SCALABLE POWERPARALLEL SYSTEMS MODELS 001, 002, 003, 004, A01, AND 101 The IBM Scalable POWERparallel Systems (TM) are a family of technical computing products that offers a scalable platform for both serial and parallel applications featuring balanced interconnection bandwidth and latency. Based on RISC System/6000 (R) technology, the first offering, the 9076 SP1, allows customers to select their processing power to meet current needs, while also offering the opportunity to scale the system upward as their computing needs grow. The 9076 SP1 is highly flexible, enabling various combinations of interactive, batch, serial, and parallel jobs to be run concurrently. The basic component of the 9076 SP1 is a system frame containing eight to 16 RISC System/6000 processor nodes. Up to four frames may be connected together for a total system of 64 processor nodes. Each node can be used to execute one or more serial jobs or multiple nodes can be dedicated to parallel jobs. The 9076 SP1 is a scalable system; the availability of multiple configurations offers customers the flexibility to add frames and processors to meet their growing computing needs. The 9076 SP1 requires a RISC System/6000 workstation as a control workstation for managing and maintaining the entire 9076 SP1 system. This workstation, when installed with the AIX/6000 (TM) operating system and system management software, allows a system administrator to manage the entire 9076 SP1 as a single system. The 9076 SP1 also uses one or more NFS (1) file servers for system booting and for user file input/output (I/O). Communication among processor nodes, and between the nodes and file server, is achieved via local area network (LAN) connection. Improved performance for parallel job communication is provided by an optional high-performance switch. This switch provides consistent bandwidth and latency between nodes, as the number of nodes is scaled up. The 9076 runs AIX/6000 Version 3.2.3 or later releases of the operating system and standard AIX/6000 software. In addition, IBM is offering innovative software for the 9076 SP1 that provides system management, job scheduling and management, and an environment for parallel application development and execution. Planned Availability Date: September 17, 1993. MES planned availability is October 29, 1993. These new models provide greater flexibility in reconfiguring central storage between logical partitions, and also include LPAR mode enhancements which were recently made available on the ES/9000 Model 520-based processors, including: o ESCON (TM) Multiple Image Facility o Ten logical partition support o A more efficient LPAR dispatcher o Synergy with MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 - Reducing LPAR's low utilization effect for the MVS partition - Providing increased system capacity o Logical CP vary support o Enhanced recovery o Closer tracking to partition processing weights. Product Enhancements o The new models demonstrate the extendibility of the ES/9000 520-based design with the introduction of the single-sided four-way processor and the eight-way multiprocessor (MP). The result is new growth capability for either the single-sided or MP customer. In addition to this growth option, the entire line of new models has improved performance through enhancements to the technology and design. The technology allows faster cycle times, while the design implements the enhanced technology and provides improved access to instructions and data. Included in the design is the new four-way single-sided/eight-way MP configurations; the ability to configure an MP system with up to 2GB of central storage; a second level high speed buffer with double the capacity of previous 9021 processor models; and a second Integrated Offload Processor (IOP) in the channel subsystem for configurations of greater than 64 channels per side. Technology enhancements include new logic and array semiconductor chips. These and other improvements provide balanced systems configurations to meet performance requirements for current and future customer applications. o The ES/9000 Model 520-based processors have achieved a leadership position for processor availability through a strategy of fault avoidance, fault tolerance, and concurrent maintenance. The ES/9000 711-based systems build upon the achievements of the previous models. Design enhancements have further increased the fault tolerance of the system. Design improvements have also been made to improve the capability to apply Licensed Internal Code (LIC) updates (patches) concurrent with customer operation. This enhancement will be available in March 1994. Complementing the design changes are technology enhancements which have improved fault avoidance. The strategic goal is in achieving continuous availability through reducing incidents and the time required to maintain the system. The improvements to the new models continue to demonstrate IBM's commitment to fulfill this requirement. o Technology and design improvements have also enhanced the environmentals of the new models. These improvements follow the significant enhancements that are in the ES/9000 Model 520-based processors. Reductions in power and cooling requirements and improvements in floor space efficiency contribute to a lower cost of computing. For example, the new Model 982 can achieve a 60% to 70% processor performance improvement in an MVS/ESA commercial environment while requiring approximately the same power and cooling as an ES/9000 Model 900. This comparison is for entry and maximum configurations without the Vector Facility feature installed. Floor space is approximately the same for the ES/9000 Model 982 and the ES/9000 Model 900. o Refer to the Statement of General Direction section on the CICS Availability Enhancement which provides enhanced application availability for CICS/ESA (TM). LoadLeveler can schedule batch jobs on groups of RISC System/6000 workstations. On Scalable POWERparallel Systems, LoadLeveler can schedule both batch and parallel batch jobs. The workstations may be either dedicated compute servers or general purpose personal workstations. Each workstation may be individually configured for LoadLeveler, declaring itself a job submitter, a compute server, or both. Each workstation specifies (to the central manager) the resources it has for running jobs. These resources include such attributes as memory size, architecture, licensed programs installed, and the classes of jobs it will accept. Each workstation may also specify how its resources will be used. Personal workstations may be configured so that their resources are available to LoadLeveler only when not in use by their owners. Dedicated compute servers may be configured to run only certain types of jobs or to have a preference for certain jobs. End users as well as systems administrators can interact with the job scheduler via AIXwindows (R) or the command line. Job placement is done by matching a flexible job description to the machine configuration. It also includes submitting parallel jobs to a static partition of the Scalable POWERparallel Systems. LoadLeveler will also attempt to balance the workload over the workstation pool. Jobs can also be submitted from a simple AIXwindows interface that constructs a default job description and allows the user to specify any additions or changes. In summary, the system will provide the capability to locate, allocate, and deliver resources (that is, facilities of the workstation cluster) to users, while adhering to load balancing, fair scheduling, and optimal usage of resources. This program has been replaced by IBM SAA (TM) ImagePlus (R) Folder Application Facility MVS/ESA (TM) (5695-041), announced in IBM Programming Announcements 290-578, 290-826, 291-196 and 292-606, dated September 5, 1990, December 18, 1990, April 22, 1991 and October 20, 1992. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. 293-064 SQL/DS VERSION 3 RELEASE 4 The Structured Query Language/Data System (SQL/DS (TM)) Version 3 Release 4 product, a key component in IBM's Information Warehouse (TM) strategy, demonstrates IBM's continued commitment to client-server computing with its implementation of Distributed Relational Database Architecture (TM)-Remote Unit of Work (DRDA (TM)-RUOW) server support in the VSE/ESA (TM) Version 1 Release 3 environment. The combination of a host-distributed relational database management system such as SQL/DS, and Extended Services Database Manager with Distributed Database Connections Services/2 (DDCS/2) Version 1.0 or IBM DATABASE 2 (TM) OS/2 (R) Version 1 (DB2 (R)/2 V1) with DDCS/2 Version 2.0, offers an easy and effective way to implement application systems that will capitalize on the strengths of both workstation and host computers. The implementation of server support in the VSE environment in the SQL/DS V3R4 product allows all client applications that support IBM's DRDA-RUOW to access data in an SQL/DS V3R4 database residing on VSE. These clients could be DOS, Windows (1) or OS/2 clients running on a workstation, or they could be SQL/DS on VM, DB2, or OS/400 (R) clients -- any application that uses DRDA interfaces. In addition, for both its VM and VSE customers, the SQL/DS Version 3 Release 4 product provides improvements in functions, usability, performance, availability, and standards. The combination of the SQL/DS V3R4 product for VSE and CICS/VSE (TM) Version 2 Release 2 in the VSE/ESA V1R3 operating system provides more virtual storage for applications through the support of applications beyond 16 megabytes (MB). The achievable number of concurrent users and SQL/DS buffers is also increased. This can improve throughput and transaction response time, if sufficient real storage is available. In the CICS/VSE environment, the SQL/DS V3R4 product now supports the single-phase commit protocol, in addition to the two-phase commit protocol. This gives CICS/VSE the flexibility to use a single-phase commit, when there are no resource integrity exposures, to improve the use of system resources. The manageability of data in the VSE/ESA system is improved with the support of Multiple Database Server Support. This enables the VSE/ESA customer to configure multiple database partitions (up to 36) in a VSE/ESA system to allow logically independent data to be split into different databases. This gives the customer the flexibility to tune each database according to the class of application and ensure the integrity of data without concern for potential corruption from activities in other partitions. The separation of production and test databases, and the capability, for batch applications, to switch between databases, are examples of the value of multiple database server support. For both the VM and VSE environments, the SQL/DS V3R4 product provides performance improvements in several areas. Also, the Performance Tuning Handbook has been added to the SQL/DS Library to help customers monitor and tune their SQL/DS databases. As access to distributed data between the SQL/DS database and DB2 opens new opportunities, the SQL/DS V3R4 product continues to implement many DB2 compatible functions to facilitate the portability of applications to and from DB2. They are: o Referential integrity support with multi-level cascade delete o Host structure support o Removal of the limit of 512 host variables in a program. The EXPLAIN facility has been enhanced to provide more information and to improve its compatibility with DB2. A Database Services Utility (DBSU) job file is being shipped to make the EXPLAIN facility easier to use. Many functions that were introduced for the SQL/DS V3R3 product in the VM environment have been added for VSE in this release. The SQL/DS V3R4 product allows the VSE/ESA customer to exploit the capabilities of VSE/ESA V1R3 and CICS/VSE V2R2, fulfilling the statement of direction (SOD) included in the SQL/DS Version 3 Release 2 and Release 3 announcement, IBM Programming Announcement 290-524, dated September 5, 1990. Planned Availability Date: April 30, 1993, for: o The SQL/DS Version 3 Release 4 product in the VM and VSE environments o The SQL/DS REXX Interface (RXSQL) feature of the SQL/DS V3R4 product in the VM environment o The VM Data Spaces Support (VMDSS) feature of the SQL/DS V3R4 product in the VM environment Planned Availability Date: to be provided later for: o The SQL/DS DataHub (TM) Support/VM feature of the SQL/DS V3R4 product in the VM environment (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (1) Trademark of Microsoft Corporation. 5688-103 SQL/DS Version 3 HIGHLIGHTS o The SQL/DS product is a key component of IBM's Information Warehouse Framework. o The SQL/DS product has added the SQL/DS VSE DRDA-RUOW server function to the distributed database connectivity already provided by the SQL/DS V3R3 product in the VM environment. o SQL/DS VSE enhancements will enable the customer to: - Exploit the 31-bit support available in VSE/ESA V1R3 to optimize on virtual storage and increase the number of achievable concurrent users and SQL/DS buffers - Have multiple databases on VSE and be able to fine tune them individually - Use applications such as Operator Communications Control Facility (OCCF) for automated management of database applications, in an operator-less environment with the enhanced message structure - Benefit from ability of the SQL/DS V3R4 product to make use of the virtual disk support offered in VSE/ESA V1R3 o SQL/DS customers in both the VM and VSE environments may see performance improvements. o The SQL/DS Performance Tuning Handbook has been added to the library. This manual consolidates performance monitoring and tuning information, hints and tips, practical examples, and guidelines for performance-related activities. o The customer will be able to develop and move applications across IBM platforms with more ease, as the SQL/DS V3R4 product provides more DB2 consistency, removes SQL/DS restrictions, and has improved compliance to standards.
