This hardware strength is complemented with OS/2 delivering increasingly powerful networking support. THREE TIER SERVER STRATEGY In March 1992, IBM unveiled its Personal Systems Server Strategy which is to provide a family of compatible offerings with price/performance granularity to accommodate every user requirement. The family of offerings will provide: Balanced performance to optimize application throughput Scalability of processor, memory, DASD, LAN connection, and availability features to ensure a precise fit to user requirements High availability features such as, data mirroring, RAID 5 Disk Arrays, multiple processors, etc. to support the most demanding applications. A variety of compatible software environments which enable optimal performance at each level of granularity The three tier strategy consists of Entry, Advanced Availability, and Fault Tolerant System offerings. ENTRY- Entry level servers are intended for small workgroup LANS of typically five to fifteen clients. These users need entry level function and performance at an affordable price. Entry servers would typically be used in file, print, and communication server environments where fault tolerance is not a primary requirement. ADVANCED AVAILABILITY-Advanced availability servers are the choice for applications which are key in running the business. These high performance systems would typically serve 10 to 250 clients in a workgroup LAN or file server application. Reliability functions such as ECC memory are available in these system solutions. The performance and scalability advantages of the Microchannel with Data Streaming enable a more productive workgroup through enhanced file server performance. These systems fully exploit the OS/2 LAN Server and Netware software. FAULT TOLERANT- Fault tolerant systems are required for those critical applications and critical databases where continuous availability is mandatory. This LAN system may be used by an entire enterprise, or by a very large workgroup. These systems are generally optimized for OS/2 Lan Server, and employ MASS/2 System Management hardware and software. In todays environment these systems are frequently targets for "right sizing" migrations. The systems utilize leading edge technology such as multiprocessors, ECC memory, hot pluggable drives, and RAID-5 disk arrays. SERVER STRATEGY ROLLOUT In March 1992, IBM announced the IBM PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 for Advanced Availability requirements. Models include: 50MHZ processors with integrated numeric coprocessor 40mb/second streaming data Microchannel Error Checking & Correction (ECC) memory and numerous additional advanced features. NEW SERVER SYSTEMS IBM announces today new server solutions to further complete the three tier offering, and enhancements to the graphic capabilities of the current Model 95 family. The new Model 9595 (Model 95XP 486) Systems are enhanced versions of the Model 8595 systems previously announced; the new models contain the new XGA-2 Video adapter which provides non-interlaced, 75Hz flicker-free refresh rate, ISO capable, advanced graphics as standard on these PS/2 leadership brand machines. C2 SECURITY ENABLING As more & more businesses move their critical data onto personal computers and local area networks, security becomes an increasing concern. One of the most stringent requirements for computer security is the "Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria" guidelines of the US Department of Defense; these requirements are frequently referred to as "C2 security". To meet this C2 classification requires a conforming operating system, and numerous physical and logical hardware features. IBM has incorporated the C2 hardware requirements together with additional customer inputs, into the 9556 and 9557 systems, thus "enabling" them for C2 security compliance. Enabling means that these new models, in conjunction with the Enhanced 2.88MB Diskette Drive, the cable cover, a suitable application and operating system provide a platform that is capable of being certified for the C2 level of security. The end result will thus satisfy the security concerns of many business applications as well as the United States Government requirements. These new features make the 9556 and 9557 among the most secure desktop systems available. VITAL PRODUCT DATA: As increasing numbers of personal computers are connected in LAN environments, network asset management becomes a significant task. All PS/2 Micro Channel machines store configuration information which includes the identification of any adapters which have been added to the system. The new Desktop/Client systems additionally store system unique Vital Product Data" (VPD) information. This means that unique System Type/Model/Serial Number information as well as Planar Serial Numbers, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) part numbers, etc. are all contained on the system board. This information can be read by a suitable application program either locally or remotely across a network thus considerably reducing the asset management task, while providing enhanced resource management information appropriate for today's connected environments. The word is derived from the Greek "ergon"- for work, and "nomos"- for natural laws of. Workstation Ergonomics is the science of fitting the workstation to the user. For any given workstation environment, there are numerous ergonomic factors which influence overall user comfort, acceptance, and productivity: these include the ambient lighting level of the office; the audio noise level; office temperature and humidity; the physical fit of the office furniture; the height of the display relative to the eyes of the user. Also the brightness and contrast ratio of the display; the absence of reflections on the work surfaces; the readability of the characters (fonts) being displayed; image stability on the display including the absence of display flicker; a keyboard which can be separately positioned from the display; having adequate workspace, and more. All of these factors must be considered for an optimum system solution. There is considerable interest in workstation ergonomics for two reasons: All other things being equal we can achieve a high degree of user comfort, and user productivity with the proper application of good ergonomic principles Europe is placing a significant emphasis on the legislative aspects of ergonomics as it applies to workstation displays (sometimes referred to as VDT's, Video Display Terminals). ISO & THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY In May of 1990, the European Community (formerly the European Economic Community) released Council Directive 90/270/EEC on the "minimum safety and health requirements for work with display screen equipment". The Directive requires each of the twelve member countries to enact legislation by year end 1992 which sets appropriate standards for new workstation displays. The Directive also requires employers to ensure an adequate work environment beyond the workstation itself. The wording of the Directive is very general, which has caused the countries to search for an accepted standard upon which to base their legislation. A consensus is developing among the European countries to use the requirements being developed by existing and widely accepted standards organizations such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization) as an example of a conforming system. The ISO Standard most often invoked is ISO 9241. Since ISO 9241 does not address electronic emissions from VDT's, a similar consensus is developing to use a Swedish specification (MPR-II) as the basis for this portion of the legislation. ISO CAPABLE VS. ISO COMPLIANT In order to satisfy the requirements of ISO 9241, a complete system must be tested and must comply with all applicable elements of ISO 9241. This system includes for example a display which has sufficiently high contrast, a graphics adapter which drives the display at a fast enough rate to avoid flicker, a CPU which generates satisfactory fonts. Individual components of the system can be identified as being "ISO capable". means that a product will provide performance which meets its portion of the ISO requirements, when used with other compatible "ISO capable" components, as part of a total system. The product contributes to total system ISO 9241 compliance in the same way as an ISO capable work chair which satisfies the chair portion of the ISO requirements; when all contributing system components satisfy their portion of the requirements, as verified by the required total system testing, we have an ISO "compliant" system. INTRINSIC VALUE Independent of the EC Directive, the ISO standard represents an international consensus by over 190 nations for workstation ergonomic excellence. IBM has long enjoyed a leadership position in workstation ergonomics. These new ISO capable systems provide users with visibly obvious benefits Flicker free performance Stable display images Sharp, crisp display characters Increased screen brightness High contrast Reduced glare Customers will appreciate the leadership performance of these products with one demonstration. Users will experience immediate ease of use and ease of viewing improvement which should provide productivity improvements. Operating systems and subsystems agents are provided to allow their resources to be managed by the LANfocus Management/2 managing system. IBM is encouraging vendors to provide agents for their system resources to allow LANfocus Management/2 products to manage them and IBM is supporting those efforts through the provision of technical assistance. IBM LANfocus Management/2 Family - Applications IBM intends to initiate a customer evaluation program for the LANfocus Management/2 family applications beginning early in 1993. Product content and general availability decisions for the applications will be made as a result of this customer evaluation. IBM is encouraging vendors to provide additional applications on this platform and is supporting those efforts with technical assistance. Customers may also choose to implement their own DSM applications on the IBM LANfocus platform. The IBM LANfocus Management/2 family applications exploit a number of IBM and industry standards and each is CID enabled. IBM LANfocus Monitor/2 With version 1 of the IBM LANfocus Monitor/2 program, IBM intends to provide an integrated set of functions to enable performance management within the LANfocus Management/2 framework of critical resources for OS/2 2.0, IBM LAN Server 3.0 and instrumented OS/2 16- and 32-bit user applications. IBM plans to integrate the LANfocus Monitor/2 program with the LAN topology-oriented user interface provided by the LANfocus View/2 program and with the LANfocus Manage/2 framework by using the X/Open Management Application Programming Interface. IBM LANfocus Start/2 Version 2 of the IBM LANfocus Start/2 program, like Version 1, provides an object-oriented, graphical user interface for managing the configuration of OS/2 LAN software in a CID environment. In Version 2, IBM intends to expand the Start/2 program support for configuring different types of connections and to take advantage of the LANfocus Management/2 platform to provide dynamic configuration validation. Additionally, IBM intends to enhance the usability of the Start/2 program by further exploiting the features of the OS/2 2.0 Workplace Shell and to enhance the usability of the CID process by providing integration with the IBM NetView Distribution Manager/2 product. IBM LANfocus Fix/2 The IBM LANfocus Fix/2 program is intended to provide automated problem determination for selected IBM subsystems. Each supported subsystem would be represented as a LANfocus Extended Agent/2 residing on the client workstation. The Fix/2 program would receive fault notifications across the LAN, correlate the fault notifications into problems and determine probable cause. The IBM LANfocus Fix/2 program would maintain a list of active problems, a log of closed problems and would support both a graphical and a textual display of problem information. IBM LANfocus NetView Tie/2 The LANfocus NetView Tie/2 program is intended to enable the NetView operator to register to receive specific notifications from resources managed by the IBM LANfocus Manage/2 program. Registering allows the NetView operator to filter the notifications to be received from a particular LAN. The LANfocus NetView Tie/2 program transforms the notifications from the OSI Alarm format to the SNA alert format and forwards the alerts to the host-based NetView system using the Communications Manager component of the IBM Extended Services product. CID Enablement This solution automates the processes of configuration, installation and distribution in the DSM environments and dramatically improves productivity for system administrators. Though there are several aspects to CID enablement, its primary objective is to provide unattended, remote installation of OS/2, its subsystems, and application software on LAN attached workstations. Today's announcement of CID enabling and enabled products, allows both standalone LAN and host-attached LAN customers to realize a dramatic resource savings in executing the CID processes. In addition to CID enabling our own products, IBM is encouraging vendors to provide CID enabled applications and is supporting these efforts by providing technical information and assistance.
