The 5292 uses a colour cathode ray tube to display up to 1920 characters in a 24-row by 80-character format. The seven colours which can be displayed are red, green, turquoise, yellow, pink, blue and white. The IBM 5292 offers, as standard capability, a low profile typewriter-style keyboard with adjustable slope, Cable-Thru and an operator adjustable audible alarm. The display has a ten (10) degree tilt capability, and the screen has been treated to reduce glare. HIGHLIGHTS o Displays up to seven colours o Plug-compatible with 5251 Model 11 o Tiltable screen (0o, +5o, or +10o) o Colour alignment via keyboard o Work station address--set from keyboard o Low profile keyboard--83-key, typewriter style - Movable - Palm rest - Adjustable slope o 24-Command functions o Cable-Thru--standard feature o Operator selectable options - Block or underscore cursor - Cursor blink - Cursor location (row/column) display - Work station address display - Display screen attribute codes - Reduced line space - Limit colour - Set alarm volume o Self-test diagnostics o Display station status including cursor location (row/column) is shown on a 25th line o Display screen standard features - Treated to reduce glare - Underscore - Blink - Nondisplay - Column separator DESCRIPTION The display of colours is achieved through the use of existing attribute codes and can be usedwithout program modification. (For example, the high intensity attribute code will result in white colour; the blink attribute code will result in red colour, etc.) For optimum use of colour, changes to existing programming support for 5251s may be desirable. The 5292 is available for attachment to System/34 (System/34 must be at least SSP Release 7 level or higher), System/38, or to the 5251 Model 2 or 12. The 5292 may be integrated into existing 5251 networks on these systems along with IBM 5251 Models 1, 11, and 999, or IBM 5252. PLANNED AVAILABILITY First customer shipment of the 5292 Colour Display Station is planned for October, 1982. Shipping dates will be assigned sequentially. Orders involving multiple units are subject to an extension of schedules assigned sequentially by each country. PREREQUISITES A 5251 Model 2 or 12 with Cluster (#2550) or Dual Cluster (#2551) feature, or a System/34 (System/34 must be at SSP Release Level 7 or higher, and if the 5292 is to be used as the system console, the System/34 must be at diagnostic Release 9.2 or higher), or a System/38. Programming Support IBM System/34 and IBM System/38 This new display device can be added to existing configurations with no change required to current system or application programs. It can also replace a 5251 Model 11, either local or remote, without reconfiguration. Default colour functions will replace the attributes associated with each field as the formats are displayed on the 5292. IBM System/38 Control Program Facility (CPF) (5714-SS1) IBM System/38 Control Program Facility (CPF) will provide special support for the 5292 Colour Display Work Station on Release 4.1 available in September, 1982. New DDS keywords will be available for each of the displayable colours. These keywords will be effective for 5292 devices only. This will provide an easy, straightforward method of using colours in designing new formats. To make use of the colours keywords or the device-type definition, 5292 device descriptions should be created as they are added to the system. Interactive Data Base Utilities (IDU) (5714-UT1) The Screen Design Aid (SDA) will support the new colour keywords for the 5292 in Release 4.1. As a screen is interactively designed, the user will be able to see the effect of colour selection. SDA is an easy method of preparing Data Description Specifications. If the new device has not been created as a 5292, the colour keywords are ignored. If the format is sent to a display that is not a 5292, fields described with colour will display attributes appropriate to noncolour devices. PLANNING INFORMATION o The 5292 Colour Display Station is a customer-setup machine. It has been designed with ease of setup and relocation in mind. A graphically-oriented manual describing setup procedures step by step will be included in the shipping container.
