The necessary procedures are described in the 9370 manuals: ASCII Subsystem Customization and Programmer's Guide, SA33-1564, and Using Terminals With The ASCII Subsystem, SA33-1562. 2 = CPT-TWX 33/35 (TTC2) protocol only. 3 = Series/1 with Multi-function attachment feature (#1310), with Feature-programmable 4-line Adapter feature (#2096), or with Asynchronous Terminal 8-Line Adapter (RPQ D02350). Information: The IBM 3151 attaches to a wide variety of IBM and non-IBM hosts via the main communications port. The IBM 3151 supports RS232C communications via a modem or direct attachment for a distance of up to 40 feet. The IBM 3151 Cartridge for Emulating IBM and DEC Terminals, IBM 3151 Cartridge for Connectivity, IBM Cartridge for Expansion and IBM 3151 Cartridge to emulate Data General, TeleVideo, and Zentec terminals provide the ability for the IBM 3151 to support RS422A communications for the emulations provided on those cartridges. The RS422A interface supports a point-to-point direct coupling with a maximum cable length of 4,000 feet. The main communications port has a selectable transmission rate from 50 bps to 38,400 bps, inbound and outbound XON/XOFF pacing (inbound pacing is the default and not selectable), and echo/character/block modes, and supports 7-or 8-bit word length and no/odd/even/mark and space for parity. On the IBM 3151 the auxiliary port is enhanced with a bidirectional data capability. This allows the attachment of output devices, such as a printer, as well as input devices, such as ASCII terminals. Transmission rates from 50 bps to 19,200 bps are selectable independent of the main communications port speed settings. Rolm CBX Support: As an alternative to a modem attachment, the 3151 may be directly connected to a ROLM CBX at speeds up to 19.2K bps through one of the following devices with RS232C (CCITT V.24/28) interface: Rolmphone Datacom Module (DCM), Data Terminal Interface (DTI), rack-mounted version of the DCM or DTI. Printers: The 3151 has an auxiliary port that can connect an ASCII printer over an RS232C direct connection. A print key allows local printing of the screen, while the software commands allow remote printing from a host. For example, the 4201/4202 Proprinter may attach via its serial (RS232C) interface to the 3151 for direct printing of text-oriented screens (or graphics and text via host programming). The I/O cable (see CABLE ORDERS below) should be used for 4201/4202 attach. Applications that require ANSI 3.64 compatibility should use one of the DEC VTxxx modes of the IBM 3151 Cartridge to Emulate IBM and DEC Terminals available for the IBM 3151 01374 Models 30x/40x. COMPATIBILITY The IBM 3151 models generate an ASCII datastream that is compatible with the IBM 3161 ASCII Display Stations. The 3101 mode on the IBM 3151 Models 30x/40x will accept and generate 3101 Model 23 datastreams. There are some operational differences in the screen management facilities and key nomenclature and key positions. The operator may receive new and different messages. The IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station Reference Manual (GA18-2634) documents these differences. It is recommended that current 3101 users refer to this manual for migration planning. LIMITATIONS The IBM 3151 Reference Manual describes specific limitations and enhancements to the datastreams emulated within the base of each model. The applicable User's Guides shipped with each machine and/or cartridge document specific limitations and enhancements to the emulations supported. These manuals should be referenced for migration from and compatibility with the various displays being emulated. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES The IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station is designated as a Customer Set-up machine. The IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station Guide to Operations is shipped with each machine and describes the procedure for setting up the IBM 3151. CABLE ORDERS The IBM 3151 models provide female main and auxiliary communications ports. Specific attachment cables are provided by many IBM systems for attachment to the host. For attachment to non-IBM hosts, refer to the IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station Reference Manual for a detailed description of the main and auxiliary communications ports pin layout. It is the customers responsibility to provide cables for these systems. Cables are readily available from a cable vendor. In some cases, a user can adapt an existing cable with a female to male converter plug. A cable for the DEC VT220 (which has a male communications port) could be converted in this manner by the user. Except for Germany, a 3 meter (10 feet) Modem cable (P/N 6343332) can be ordered as an accessory for attaching a modem requiring RS232C Communications to the 3151 main port. An 1.2 meter (4 feet) I/O cable (P/N 6343373) can be ordered as an accessory for attaching an IBM 4201 Proprinter or IBM 4202 Proprinter XL to the 3151 auxiliary port. In Germany, the 1.2 meter (4 feet) I/O cable can be ordered for attachment to modems. A Multi-Function Attachment cable (P/N 8310553) can be ordered as an accessory for attaching the IBM 3151 to a host via the IBM Cabling System, with RS422A communications. INSTALLABILITY The IBM 3151 is a Customer Set-up machine with a 1 day allowance. PROBLEM DETERMINATION The IBM 3151 provides operator warning messages, operating status, and communications status on the bottom (25th or 26th) line of the display. The IBM 3151 performs a number of diagnostics at power up time. The IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station Guide to Operations, which is shipped with each IBM 3151, describes the messages and procedures to follow for problem determination.
