Except for a minor NLS Keyboard Support change, it provides all the functions of the IBM 5394-Release 1 and several additional functions to enhance National Language Support, 3270 Device Emulation, and Communications with an IBM AS/400 or IBM System 36/38 Host Systems. IBM 5394 Remote Control Units communicating with an AS/400-Release 2 must have 5394-Release 2 microcode installed to maintain functional consistency between local and remote workstations. Also announcing is the attachment support for the IBM Printers 6262- models T12 & T14, 4224-models 1E3 and 1A3 on IBM 5394- Release 1 & Release2. GENERAL AVAILABILITY: October 27, 1989. PRODUCT NUMBER Description Machine Type Models IBM 5394-Remote Control Unit 5394 All Release 2 Microcode HIGHLIGHTS o Keyboard functions - Typeahead - Insert key Toggle - True Monocasing o Support for Special Character Keyboard Set o Enhanced 3270 Device Emulation o Communication Enhancements o Enhanced Problem Determination Capabilities o Support for Additional IBM Printer Models o National Language Support Enhancements - Change IBM Enhanced Keyboard IDs to country requirements - Update Diacritic Support o Auto-quad selection for Bi-Di Countries(Arabic & Hebrew) o Front face Text Assist support for Hebrew 1A keyboards o Change IBM Enhanced Keyboard support from Shift lock to Caps lock for Iceland, Arabic, and Hebrew DESCRIPTION The IBM 5394-Release 2 microcode replaces IBM 5394-Release 1.X microcode. Except for a minor NLS Keyboard Support change, the Release 2 microcode provides all the functions of the 5394-Release 1.X, and enhancements to National Language Support, 3270 Device Emulation, and Communications with an IBM AS/400, IBM System 36/38 Host Systems, while maintaining functional consistency between workstations communicating with an AS/400 via an IBM 5394-Remote Control Unit and those that are directly attached. The additional functions supported by the 5394 Release 2 microcode are: o Keyboard functions - Typeahead: Typeahead is a mode that allows a user to continue keying even if the keyboard becomes locked. Keys that are pressed while the keyboard is locked are saved into a workstation controller buffer (except for some special cases). When the keyboard unlocks, keystrokes saved in the buffer are processed before any new key strokes. This support applies to both office and data processing environments. - Insert key Toggle: With this feature selecting and Resetting Insert mode can be accomplished by toggling the Insert key (Reset key depression not required to exit insert mode) - True Monocasing: This feature enables the Caps lock to become true monocasing. In this mode, any alpha character selected would be capitalized regardless of what shift position it occupies on the keyboard. o Support for Special Character Keyboard Set - This is an additional keyboard layer added to the IBM Enhanced keyboard. It is accessed via the ALT + SHIFT key sequence. It provides the user access to extended graphic characters, there by providing the ability to enter Country extended Code Page (CECP) characters from the keyboard. This feature supports all displays that support IBM Enhanced keyboards. o Alt Shift/Caps Lock - This feature provides the alternate function of the designated lock function via the ALT key. That is, if the base keyboard supports 'Caps Lock', then, ALT key + Caps Lock key enables the Shift Lock function or if the base keyboard supports the 'Shift Lock' function, then, ALT key + Shift Lock key enables Caps Lock function. o 3270 Device Emulation Enhancements - The following new functions are now available on 5250 devices operating in 3270 Device Emulation mode. - Row 1,Column 1 (Pre-requisite: AS/400 Release 2): This feature allows the Host Program to define an input field with the first character position that can be entered beginning in Row 1, Column 1. - Allow exit from field in Insert mode: This function will enable a field to be exited while in Insert mode without having to exit the Insert mode first. - Suppress Leading and Embedded nulls (Pre-requisite: AS/400 Release 2): A new 5250 Data stream command (Read MDT Alternate) can now be used to suppress the transmission of Leading and Embedded Nulls to the Host. - Roll function in Insert mode: Roll UP/Down keys may now be used while in Insert mode without having to exit the Insert mode first. o Communications Enhancements - V.25 bis Autodial Support: V.25 bis Protocol may now be used on a 5394-Model 01A or 01B configured for SDLC operation (a modem supporting V.25 bis Protocol is required). The V.25 bis auto dial is for call establishment and clearing on a switched telephone network. - X.25 - 512 bytes packet support: Support for 512 byte packets is now provided for improved performance - X.25 - Variable size RU: X.25 performance has been improved by optimizing the RU size for each packet size. This performance enhancement will be more evident when communicating with a System/38 or with an AS/400 than with a System/36. - X.25 - Link level reinitialization: When the 5394 is configured for a single Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) or a single Switched Virtual Circuit (SVC) Answer only, operator intervention is no longer required to re-establish connection at the link layer following disconnection as part of the link level error recovery. - X.25 - Auto SVC Answer Mode: The 5394 can now be configured for X.25 SVC auto-answer mode. When so configured, at Power on time, the 5394 will establish the link and wait for an incoming call with no operator intervention. o Support for keyboard IDs to meet country requirements - The IBM Enhanced Keyboard IDs for the following countries have been changed: -- Spain- Changed from 172 to 173 -- Italy- Changed from 293 to 142 o Improved Diacritic Support - This support enables certain accent keys to be spaced to meet unique country requirements. o Front Face Text Assist Support - New Text functions defined in the front face of Hebrew 1A keyboard are now supported. o Auto-quad selection of BI-DI countries (Arabic and Hebrew) - This feature automatically selects the appropriate layer and shift lock status whenever the cursor direction is changed. The screen indicators inform the operator of the shift lock status and the layer selected. o 5394-Release 2 does not support the following Keyboards: Keyboard Language Config.Code 06 Belgium 23 Mixed Swiss French/French 24 Mixed Swiss French/French Multinational 25 Mixed Swiss German/German 26 Mixed Swiss German/German Multinational 27 Swiss French 29 Swiss German This minor NLS change will enable the workstations attached to the 5394 Remote Control Unit to be functionally consistent with locally attached workstations communicating with an AS/400 Release 2. Also announcing is the support for attachment of IBM 6262 Printer-Models T12 & T14 and IBM 4224 Printer-Models 1E3 & 1A3 to the IBM 5394 Remote Control Unit. These printers are now supported by 5394-Release 1 & Release 2. NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT The IBM 5394-Release 2 supports all languages that are currently being supported by the IBM 5394-Release 1 with the following exception; The 5394-Release 2 microcode does not support the following Keyboards: Keyboard Language Config Code 06 Belgium 23 Mixed Swiss French/French 24 Mixed Swiss French/French Multinational 25 Mixed Swiss German/German 26 Mixed Swiss German/German Multinational 27 Swiss French 29 Swiss German This change from 5394-Release 1 microcode will enable the workstations attached to the 5394-Remote Control Unit to be functionally consistent with locally attached workstations communicating with AS/400 Release 2.
