ISO INFORMATION WORKSTATION ERGONOMICS AND THE ISO 9241 STANDARD There is considerable interest in workstation ergonomics because under proper conditions, we can obtain a high degree of user comfort and productivity. In addition, the European Community (EC) has issued a Directive on workstation safety and health which requires each of the member countries to enact legislation which sets workstation requirements. A consensus is developing among the European countries to use an international standard, ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9241, as the basis for their legislation. The EC Directive addresses a wide range of elements in the workstation environment including a suitable display, clearly formed display characters, a proper keyboard, adjustable furniture, adequate lighting, a proper work chair, etc. All of the elements of the EC Directive constitute a "complete workstation environment". ISO 9241 specifies requirements for most of these same elements. Since this product, the IBM ThinkPad 7oo/700C, is only one of the elements of the "complete workstation environment", by itself this product cannot be compliant with all parts of ISO 9241. We call these individual elements or components "ISO capable". ISO capable means that this product will provide performance which meets it's portion of the ISO 9241 requirements, when this product is used with other compatible "ISO capable" components, as part of a total system. This product contributes to total system ISO 9241 compliance just as an ISO capable work chair would satisfy the chair portion of the requirements; assuming the other system components satisfy their portion of the requirements, we have an ISO compliant system. Totally independent of the EC Directive, ISO is an accepted international standard for workstation ergonomic excellence. Compliance with the ISO standard assures users significant benefits, including: o flicker free performance o stable display images o sharp, crisp display characters o increased screen brightness o high contrast o reduced glare The resultant highly readable display provides readily apparent ease of viewing benefits to the user, and potential productivity gains for the organization. Systems Management The display, keyboard, power management, and packaging technologies used in the all three models improves user satisfaction with the convenience, and usability of a battery or AC adapter-powered portable notebook system. The design provides: Convenient weight and size for carrying in a briefcase. The IBM ThinkPad 700 and 700C has 85 key keyboard with the IBM integrated TrackPoint II. The TrackPoint II is an easy-to-use, ergonomic design pointing device. The TrackPoint II emulates all the existing mouse function without any unique software to drive the TrackPoint II. The ThinkPad 700 PS/2 has an easy-to-read, 9.5-inch LCD with 640 x 480 VGA resolution, and cold fluorescent backlighting. Depending on the application, up to 64 grey scales can be addressed on the LCD. It displays black characters on a white background and it may be reversed to a white on black mode by a simple switch operation. The ThinkPad 700C PS/2 has an easy-to-read, 10.4-inch thin film transistor (TFT) active matrix color LCD with 640 x 480 VGA resolution. Depending on the application, up to 256 of 4096 colors may be addressed on the LCD. Efficient power management: To allow productive use of the mobile user's time, a suspend/resume function is provided. An application is suspended by closing the clam shell leaving the power switch on. When the clam shell is opened, the application resumes at the point it was suspended. During suspension system components are automatically powered off except for the real time clock and application memory. For changing the rechargeable battery pack without disrupting the application, an internal backup battery is provided. To conserve battery power, the hardware supports sleep mode. Sleep mode conserves battery power during idle times between clock cycles and key strokes by putting system components in an idle state resulting in low power usage. Application, operational, operating system, and environmental characteristics will affect actual battery duration between recharges. In summary, the internal battery life charging times are: Model 700 Model 700C (Hours) Monochrome Color --------------------------------------------------- Battery Life 3.8 - 7.5 2.0 - 4.0 Suspend Life (Partial)* 6.0 6.0 Suspend Life (Full)* 48.0 36.0 Power Off Charge 2.0 1.4 Operation Charge 3.0 1.5 Full Suspend Charge 2.0 1.4 Partial Suspend Charge 2.0 1.4 Quick Charger Time 1.4 1.4 * Assumes partial or fully charged battery The IBM ThinkPad 700 and 700C supports APM (Advanced Power Management) interface.
