Programming Requirements Operating System Software IBM ValuePoint 6381 will be compatible with the following operating systems: PC/DOS 5.02 PC/DOS 6.1 PC/DOS + WINDOWS 3.1 OS/2 1.30.1 SE and EE OS/2 1.30.2 SE and EE OS/2 2.0 OS/2 2.0 Service Pak OS/2 2.1 NetWare 2.2 NetWare 3.11 SCO UNIX 3.2v4 AIX 1.3 NOTE: Operating System and video graphics driver support is required for IBM ValuePoint 6381 SVGA graphics capabilities. SVGA support may not be available on some operating systems. NOTE: The ValuePoint 6381 will have Novell certification at general availability. BIOS FLASH ROM will support Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) and POST. Compatibility The IBM ValuePoint 6381 are compatible with the IBM Personal Computer, Personal Computer XT (TM) and Personal Computer AT (R) at the BIOS interface level (BIOS not identical) and at most hardware interfaces. The IBM ValuePoint 6381 have been designed to maintain compatibility with existing personal computer software and non-timing dependent features. Due to the high level of integration, some features, such as Personal Computer XT and Personal Computer AT memory upgrades and graphic adapters are not supported. The IBM ValuePoint 6381 has not been tested with all non-IBM features/options. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporations (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation . Limitations With 32 bit addressing the maximum memory address space on IBM ValuePoint 6381 models is 64 Megabytes (MB). Of this 64MB memory address space, the system requires 384K for its use. This leaves the customers with a maximum of 63.6MB of the memory address space for their usage. An additional 128KB of the memory address space is required for system usage if BIOS/POST is copied to RAM for execution. 72-pin (80ns, 70ns) single RAS Memory SIMMs, 64MB maximum memory. Maximum External (L2) cache memory supported is 256KB (Mxx models). Maximum Video RAM supported is 1MB. Maximum number of hard files supported is 2. Maximum IDE hardfile size supported is 528MB. Maximum number of 2 diskette drives supported SVGA DOS/Windows support is on the video driver diskettes shipped with the systems The IBM Token Ring Network Adapter II is designed and recommended to be used in systems with a maximum of 16MB of memory. If all I/O card slots are populated, average wattage of the I/O cards should be limited to 8.5 Watts. Populating all I/O card slots with options that have an average load of greater than 8.5 Watts will cause recommended thermal limits in the I/O card area to be exceeded. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities The IBM ValuePoint 6381 are designated as customer setup (CSU). CSU allowance is one day. Cable Orders There are no cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard and mouse connections. All cables are provided with the system unit and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. Installability The IBM ValuePoint 6381 is designed to function in either the horizontal (desktop) or vertical position using an approved floor stand. The following floor stand is approved for PS/ValuePoint systems: For information call your IBM HelpWare Number. By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard, peripherals, and verifies that the AC voltage switch on the power supply is set to the correct position. Power is then turned on and Setup is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. The Configuration Utility resides in ROM. In some instances the user will be prompted to run this utility, or the user may invoke it by pressing the "F1" key during memory POST. The IBM ValuePoint 6381 have a universal power supply with an external switch and may, therefore, be used worldwide. Problem Determination If a failure is found at initial installation, a message will appear on the screen. If POST is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette via an icon. The troubleshooting procedures consist of a power-on self test and easy-to-follow troubleshooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element: display, keyboard, or mouse, can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions.
