In addition to the menus a small multilingual publication provides guidance in completing choices to be made. Once selections have been made the system will then install OS/2 with out further intervention from the User. After installation the user has the choice of keeping the diskette images on the hard disk or backing up the images on diskettes and then erasing the images to free up disk space for data use. The above OS/2 "Quickload" support both the Basic and Enhanced keyboards. As specified in Note 3 above the keyboard ID is set as part of the OS/2 Quickload Setup. Plug and Play Support IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems support the Plug and Play specifications designed to to make it easier for users to install, upgrade, and make changes to their Personal Computers. Plug and Play systems utilizing Plug and Play adapter cards are self-configuring All IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems have BIOS support and a Plug and Play Utility that support this emerging technology for hardware and software. This utility is intended for use with the IBM ValuePoint Performance Series systems (6472, 6482 and 6492) ONLY. It must NOT be used on other ValuePoint models. Advanced Power Management (APM) IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems support the Advanced Power Management (APM) Specification, Version 1.1 Advanced Power Management consists of several layers of microcode and software that provide a cooperative environment in which applications, operating systems, device drivers, and BIOS (basic input/output system) work together to reduce power consumption. The IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems come with power management features already set up. The Configuration Utility program has a default setting of 30 minutes for automatically initiating power management of the display, processor, and hard disk. BIOS Configuration Utility The BIOS Configuration Utility program has power management options also. This program implements power-saving functions when Power Manager is not installed. Power Manager The Power Manager provides two ways for you to control your system. The Power Manager "Menu Bar" on the desktop offers selections for instantly controlling devices such as processor and display. The Power Manager screen saver offers power management selections that take effect after a specified period of inactivity. Menu Bar The desktop menu bar has a number of power management choices that you can select and implement immediately. The following describe the menu choices available. Help Instant OFF - put all devices in low power state. Display OFF - to immediately activate the current Windows screen saver program Hard Disk Off - to immediately reduce the power and spin down the hardfile. The hardfile is still ready to respond. Processor Slow(Fast) - to immediately slow your processor speed. The Processor will run slow until FAST is selected Setup - to activate the Power Manager Screen Saver's setup function. Power Manager Screen Saver This screen saver provides automatic power management functions using the standard Windows methods of detecting idle periods. The Screen Saver Setup options provide a list of devices which you can select for power management. Setup also has a field for specifying the amount of idle time necessary to activate the screen saver. Compatibility ValuePoint Systems Compatibility Report IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems will be tested for compatibility with numerous IBM and OEM operating systems, software applications, and programs. A documented statement of compatibility will be made available to Marketing and Support channels when testing is completed. This compatibility document will also be made available to users via various IPCC Bulletin Boards. For software not included in the compatibility test report the user should contact the manufacturer or place of purchase to validate compatibility. Limitations With 32 bit addressing the maximum memory address space on IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems models is 4 Giga Bytes (GB). Of the 128MB maximum system memory, the system requires 348K for its use. This leaves the customers with a maximum of 127.6MB of the memory address space for their usage. 72-pin (70ns) Industry Standard Memory SIMMs, 128MB maximum memory. Maximum External (L2) cache memory supported is 256KB. Maximum Video RAM supported is 2MB. Maximum number of 4 hardfiles supported. Maximum single IDE hardfile size supported is 1GB. (Giga Byte) Maximum number of 2 diskette drives supported SVGA DOS/Windows support is on the video driver diskettes shipped with the systems Diskette Factory OS/2 2.11 will initially support 256 color SVGA drivers only. Additional driver support will be available in future updates. OS/2 2.1 does not support the Intel (TM) SL Series processors. A corrective fix is available through support centers. OS/2 1.3 and 2.0 support hardfile partitions up to 528MB only. The IBM Token Ring Network Adapter II is designed and recommended to be used in systems with a maximum of 16MB of memory. If all I/O card slots are populated, average wattage of the I/O cards should be limited to 8.5 Watts. Populating all I/O card slots with options that have an average load of greater than 8.5 Watts will cause recommended thermal limits in the I/O card area to be exceeded. When two IDE devices with differing performance charateristics are attached on the same IDE cable they will be supported at the performance level of the slowest device. In these cases it is recommended that each device be attached on it's own cable (Note: planar has two IDE connectors each supporting an IDE cable with two device attachments for a maximum of four IDE devices being supported dependent upon available file bays.) Planning Information Customer Responsibilities The IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems are designated as customer setup (CSU). CSU allowance is one day. Cable Orders There are no cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard and mouse connections. All cables are provided with the system unit and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. To support more than two IDE devices on the IBM ValuePoint 6482 the optional IDE Hardfile Cable Option (PN 06H3610) is required. (Note: this cable is provided with 6492 Models.) Installability The ValuePoint 6472 and 6482 are designed to function in either the horizontal (desktop) or vertical position using an approved floor stand. The SCI Systems Floor Stand -- Model QMPE1003 is approved for ValuePoint systems. The ValuePoint 6472 and 6482 should not be used in the vertical position when using some CD-ROMs. Consult your CD-ROM manufacturer for information on the proper orientation. The ValuePoint 6492 should not be used in the horizontal position By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard, peripherals and verifies that the AC voltage switch on the power supply is set to the correct position. Power is then turned on and setup is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self tests. The Configuration Utility resides in ROM. In some instances, the user will be prompted to run this utility, or the user may invoke it by pressing the F1 key during memory POST. The IBM ValuePoint Performance Series Systems have a universal power supply that operates with either 115VAC or 230VAC. The setting is selected by manually operating the switch on the rear of the systems. All power supplies have built-in overload protection and surge protection. Problem Determination If a failure is found at initial installation, a message will appear on the screen. If POST is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette via an icon. The trouble-shooting procedures consist of a power-on self test and easy-to-follow trouble-shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element (display, keyboard or mouse) can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions.
