ThinkPad Proven ThinkPad Proven is an innovative program where IBM is working with a number of industry-leading manufacturers whose products and services meet our standards for ThinkPad compatibility, warranty, and technical support. ThinkPad Proven not only broadens the customer's choice of products, but gives peace of mind as well. Before a third-party product can use the ThinkPad Proven emblem, the manufacturer must state that the product has been tested, warranted, and supported to demanding ThinkPad compatibility standards. The ThinkPad Proven emblem signifies that: The manufacturer has stated to IBM that the product has completed an IBM-developed test procedure that assures compliance with ThinkPad compatibility standards The product has been approved for use on specific ThinkPad models, which will be listed on the emblem The manufacturer warrants a hardware product for a minimum of three years; a software product for 90 days System Expandability PCMCIA The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems have a PCMCIA slot that can accommodate two type-II cards or one type-III PC card. The PCMCIA card slot conforms to the PCMCIA PC Card Standard release 2.01 and the PCMCIA Card and Socket Services Specification release 2.0, dated November 1992. This emerging standard allows for the insertion of many devices, such as mass storage, memory and communications. The ThinkPad system also supports suspend/resume function when the PCMCIA card is installed. For example, when the user is operating with a communications application and PCMCIA card, after suspend/resume operation is completed, the user does not need to restart the operating system or communications application. PC Card Director PC Card Director is provided as part of the preload for DOS, Microsoft Windows, and OS/2. PC Card Director helps you obtain the status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in the system. On Microsoft Windows, PC Card Director can register an application program for PCMCIA cards and execute them automatically. A listing of supported PCMCIA cards by Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver is available from IBM. Advanced Power Management Power Management: The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems provide a power management system that is almost transparent to the user. The highly advanced power management hardware and software provides longer battery life. Automatic and manual power mode operations (standby/suspend/hibernation) for energy conservation reduces battery consumption. The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems also provide a ThinkPad Features Program allowing you to control power usage of the computer. The Fuel-Gauge Program shows remaining battery power. While using the external power, the program indicates whether the battery pack is fully charged or still being charged. The ThinkPad Features Program allows the user to preset the power management mode for battery operation: low, medium or high performance. Power modes only affect the computer when the battery pack is in use. You can select settings for component time outs and select the processor speed. The timeout setting shuts off certain components temporarily when no activity occurs for a preset amount of time. The timeout options are: Suspend timer -- The computer is placed in a suspend mode. In suspend mode, the computer is off, however the information in the memory remains intact. LCD off timer -- The LCD is turned off, however the display contents remain in the memory. Hard Disk timer -- The hard disk drive motor is turned off. In addition, the user can select the speed of the processor. The computer runs faster at higher speed settings, however lower speed settings allow the computer to run longer on a battery charge. The processor runs at full speed when busy, and slows down when the computer is idle. The following power modes can be initiated automatically or manually. Standby Mode -- Entered for short periods of time, such as when you are having a short conversation Suspend Mode -- Entered when you are going to be away from the computer for short periods of time Hibernation Mode -- Entered when you leave your office, but return the following day Publications The following publication is shipped with the product. Limitations The audio control of Fn+F5/F6 key combination or ThinkPad features is beep on/off control only, if the internal audio card is not installed. The beep setting is always on when the ThinkPad 360CE or 360CSE system is installed in the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II without installing the internal audio card. Supervisor Password is not supported by the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE. The Percentage of remaining power (indicated by percentage) appears but duration of remaining power (by hours) does not appear when the 360 NiMH battery pack is used. Duration of remaining power (hours) only appears when the ThinkPad 750 NiMH Battery Pack is used. The Battery discharge function of the ThinkPad features is not supported. The System does not enter suspend or hibernation mode while the internal or PCMCIA modem option is in busy status. The total memory capacity, above the standard memory of 4MB, you can obtain by using the IC DRAM cards is 8MB, 12MB or 20MB. Parity memory function is not supported. Modem support for the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems and the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I is provided through the external modem attachment to the RS-232 serial port (rear), or a PCMCIA PC optional feature card utilizing the PCMCIA slot that can accommodate two type-II or one type-III PCMCIA cards. The ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE systems and the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I conform to the PCMCIA PC Card Standard release 2.01 and the PCMCIA Card and Socket Services Specification release 2.0, dated November 1992. The system has been designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference and in some cases only one communication card may be able to be used. PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that can not be anticipated. Also point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended. Video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video pass-through, VESA Local Bus) is not supported by the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE and the IBM ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. The IBM 8516 "touch screen" color display requires the TrackPoint II to be disabled before connecting it to the external display connector. To disable the TrackPoint II, follow the instructions provided in the IBM ThinkPad 360 family Users Guide. Dual display mode is not supported when IBM 9515/9517/9518 displays are attached to the ThinkPad 360CE. Lines may extend across the LCD screen. Set the display mode to 'CRT' and watch the CRT display and not the system LCD display. High-performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. High Speed PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem V.32bis data compression is limited by applications that utilize the BIOS controlling the serial port. Data compression for applications that do not bypass the BIOS is limited to 19.2Kbps. Many applications bypass the BIOS, therefore, they allow data compression approaching the theoretical limit of 57.6Kbps, or four times the data compression. If a ThinkPad 360CE or 360CSE system is used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II, for the comfort and convenience of the user the height of the system should be adjusted or an external keyboard should be used. The HDD password (HDP) is not supported when it is installed in the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. Remove hard disk password while it is installed (or re-installed) in the computer, then use with the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. The Hard disk drive is secured by the ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II security lock and tie-down capability. Password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from "partial" suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad Dock I and ThinkPad Dock II. The PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) diagnostics program usually does not support slot number greater than two. Re-install the PCMCIA adapter into the computer PCMCIA slot (slot number one or two) to diagnose a suspected failing PCMCIA adapter installed in the ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or ThinkPad Dock II (slot number three or four). "Point Enabler" (one of the device drivers of the PCMCIA adapter) does not support slot number greater than two. A PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) installed in the slot of the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or ThinkPad Dock II PCMCIA slot (slot number three or four) cannot be used with point enabler. Use the built-in microphone of the IBM PCMCIA Audio Adapter if the external microphone gain is not sufficient. To play back MIDI audio in a Windows environment, do either of the following: Disable Card Service and Socket Service software by following the instructions supplied with the IBM PCMCIA Audio Adapter Use Windows VGA display driver instead of the ThinkPad SVGA display driver. Planning Information Cable Orders All cables are included with the system. Installability The ThinkPad 360CE or 360CSE system requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory, an operating system, and other features. Problem Determination If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction or error code will appear on the screen. The user should note this information and refer to the User's Guide shipped with the system unit. System units that fail at installation or during a power up sequence will automatically go to the system diagnostics to isolate the failing field replaceable unit (FRU) or refer the user to the service representative for the ThinkPad 360CE and 360CSE. The trouble-shooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow trouble-shooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. Security, Auditability and Control Standard Security Features Passwords A Power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears: Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode by opening the LCD or pressing the Fn key. If the return to normal operation is caused by the timer or an incoming call through modem, the password prompt does not appear. The LCD remains blank until the correct password is entered. The HDD Password (HDP) is a feature of the systems. It is used to protect HDD data. Once HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is moved to another system. The HDP password prompt appears: Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from a suspend mode Physical Lock The user can use the hook on the hard disk locking mechanism to leash with a user selected padlock and chain or cable. Security Optional Features Security Base: The Security Base acts as a cradle for the system, which provides the following physical security measures: Bolts the system to the desk Keylocks the system in the security base with the hard disk Locking mechanism (padlock is user's choice) Keylocks the Port Replicator Models I and II in the security base with the PCMCIA cards (Model I) Protects removal of hard disk Protects access to the screw holes in the system Protects access to the System Expansion and I/O connectors User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
