Technical Support International Warranty Service for full range of service and support IBM Helpware IBM ThinkPad Proven Description ThinkPad 360PE The new ThinkPad 360PE offers power, performance, and pen input capability at a surprisingly affordable price. The ThinkPad 360PE also improves the productivity of mobile professionals who work while traveling. Designed to fit into a briefcase and weighing only 6.8 pounds, the ThinkPad 360PE system is convenient to carry with you anywhere. IBM's unique TrackPoint II offers pointing device convenience - no additional space is required for operation and there is no need to carry an external mouse. The 9.5-inch (maximum diagonal size of viewable area) Dual Scan colour VGA display can be pivoted around a central hinge, and laid down over the keyboard for more convenient pen input. The ThinkPad 360PE offers flexibility and uncompromising performance with the Intel i486 DX2/50 microprocessor with 8KB of cache, a 340MB removable hard disk drive, and 4MB standard memory (expandable to 20MB using customer-installable IC DRAM memory cards or affordable non-parity IC-DRAM memory options, available in 4MB, 8MB, or 16MB increments). ThinkPad 360PE Pen-based Environment The ThinkPad 360PE provides two interfaces for the mobile worker - keyboard and pen. The great advantage of pen interface is that the ThinkPad 360PE can take the place of the paper system for most workers. Unlike a keyboard, the pen is not obtrusive in nature when used in front of a customer or in a group meeting. It enables the mobile worker to take notes as if on paper. Additionally, the pen input creates an electronic image which may be stored, transmitted, or shared with others like any computer file. In many instances it may be necessary to obtain another participant's confirmation such as a client's signature after taking an order. The ThinkPad 360PE enables signature capture which aids in quicker paperless transaction processing. In addition, the pen-enabled ThinkPad 360PE has the ability to transform printed letters into computer recognisable text. ThinkPad 360PE Communications Environment The ThinkPad 360PE provides communication application integrity by not entering into a suspend or hibernation mode while the PCMCIA modem option is in busy status. Note: When certain Type II PCMCIA communications cards are used simultaneously some cable interference may be encountered, requiring use of only one communication card at a time. When the ThinkPad 360PE system is used with either the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II, then for the comfort and convenience of the user, the height of the system should be adjusted or an external keyboard should be used. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. ThinkPad 360PE Additional Features Standard advanced design features of the ThinkPad 360PE include: Untethered 'batteryless' pen TrackPoint II pointing device Pop-up keyboard for easy customer access to add memory, replace the battery, remove the diskette drive, or upgrade the hard disk drive capacity Plug-in flexibility with PCMCIA slot supporting one Type III or two Type I/II PCMCIA cards VESA local bus 1MB video RAM for enhanced graphics performance Sleek black design synonymous with the ThinkPad, plus free optional nameplate personalisation Preloaded Operating Systems and Application Software The following preinstalled, complimentary software applications enable you to become immediately engaged in the mobile computing experience. ThinkPad NiMH Battery Pack The battery pack is an internal power source to the computer when the AC adapter is not available. The battery pack is rechargeable and is charged within the system unit when atteched to the AC adapter, either when the system is operating or switched off. With a fully charged battery pack the user can operate the computer up to 7.0 hours depending on the application and the configuration usage. PC Cards which do not support the power management function may cause the shorter battery operation hours. Battery operation hours and charging hours are: Function TP360PE Power off/suspend charging 1.5 hrs Charging during operation 2.0 hrs Quick charging 1.5 hrs Battery Operation (Range) (*1) 3.0-7.0 hrs Note (*1): Power management and application dependent. In the table above, the lower figure was derived using the Veritest SteepleChase(**), the higher figure using the PC Bench(**) Battery Rundown tets. Using the Fuel-Gauge Program, the user can see on the screen how much battery power is remaining. Advanced Power Management The ThinkPad 360PE system provides a power management system which is almost transparent to the user. The highly advanced power management hardware and software provide longer battery life. Automatic and manual power mode operations (standby/suspend/hibernation) for energy conservation reduces battery consumption. The ThinkPad 360PE system also provides a ThinkPad Features Program allowing you to control power usage of the computer. The Fuel-Gauge Program shows remaining battery power. While using the external power, the program indicates whether the battery pack is fully charged or still charging. The ThinkPad Features Program allows the user to preset the power management mode for battery operation: low, medium or high performance. Power modes only affect the computer when the battery pack is in use. You can select settings for component time outs and select the processor speed. The timeout setting shuts off certain components temporarily when no activity occurs for a preset amount of time. The timeout options are: Suspend Timer -- The computer is placed in a suspend mode. In suspend mode the computer is off, however the information in the memory remains intact. LCD Off Timer -- The LCD is turned off, however the display contents remain in the memory. Hard Disk Timer -- The hard disk drive motor is turned off. Processor Timer -- The user can select the speed of the processor. The computer runs faster at higher speed settings. However, lower speed settings allow the computer to run longer on a battery charge. The processor runs at full speed when busy, and slows down when the computer is idle. The following power modes can be initiated automatically or manually: Standby Mode -- Entered for short periods of time, such as when you are having a short conversation Suspend Mode -- Entered when you are going to be away from the computer for short periods of time Hibernation Mode -- Entered when you leave your office, but return the following day. The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port. Video Before connection to an ThinkPad 360PE, the IBM 8516 "touch screen" colour display and IBM ThinkPad Space Saver Keyboard require the TrackPoint II to be disabled. To disable the TrackPoint II, follow the instructions provided in the ThinkPad 360PE User Guide. Video capture adapters which require VGA pass-through (video pass-through, VESA Local Bus) are not supported by the ThinkPad 360PE when used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II. The Analog-to Digital Video Converter Adapter optional feature is not supported on the ThinkPad 360PE when used with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I. PCMCIA When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference and in some cases it may only be possible to use one communication card. The PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) diagnostics program usually does not support slots numbered greater than two. Re-install the PCMCIA adapter into the computer PCMCIA slot (slot number one or two) to diagnose suspected failing PCMCIA adapters installed in the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II (slots number three or four). "Point Enabler" (one of the device drivers of the PCMCIA adapter) doesn't support slots numbered greater than two. A PCMCIA adapter (PC Card) installed in the slot of the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator Model I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II PCMCIA slot (slots number three or four) cannot be used with a point enabler. PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing defined interface for the Socket and Card Services. These point enablers may interfere with other device drivers which use the defined interface. This may result in problems that are hard to diagnose. Users must ensure that their their specific environment is not affected by PC Card point enablers which bypass defined interfaces. The IBM High Speed PCMCIA V.32bis Data/Fax Modem achieves transmission rates of 19.2Kbps with applications which use BIOS for communication to a serial port. Many applications which bypass the BIOS may approach the theoretical limit of 57.6Kbps. Passwords The Supervisor Password is not supported by the ThinkPad 360PE. The HDD password (HDP) is not supported when the HDD is installed in a IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II. Remove the hard disk password when the HDD is installed (or re-installed) in the computer, then use with the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II. The Hard disk drive is secured by the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II security lock and tie-down capability. The password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from "partial" suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad Dock I or IBM ThinkPad Dock II. However, the correct password must still be entered before the system will operate. Battery Pack When the intelligent IBM ThinkPad NiMH battery pack is used, the remaining power (hours and percentage) is displayed. However when the IBM ThinkPad 360 NiMH battery pack is used, only the percentage of remaining power is displayed. The Battery Discharge function in ThinkPad Features is not supported. Compatibility ThinkPad 360PE systems are designed to be compatible with the IBM Personal System/2 (*).
