DESCRIPTION The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform is a program which provides an environment for RPG II applications by offering a subset of the key utilities and an Operation Control Language (OCL) interpreter. This gives a new or experienced user the ability to enjoy RPG II business applications in a multiuser environment at a lower entry price. A single purchase allows for the attachment of up to eight terminals in addition to the system console. The Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform includes a "terminal manager" which will support the IBM 3151 ASCII Display, Models 310/410 and 360/460, with the IBM Cartridge for Multiuser System Attachment feature. The IBM PS/2, the IBM PC/AT Model 339 and the IBM PC/XT Model 286, all with the IBM Enhanced keyboard, will also be supported as workstations by using the Workstation module provided with the PS/2 RPG II Application Platform. The "terminal manager" provides multiple end users with the ability to execute RPG II applications on the PS/2 central processor. Attached Personal System/2's and Personal Computers may execute standalone DOS and OS/2 PC programs such as word processing or spreadsheet applications. The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit is used in conjunction with the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Platform to write, modify, and compile RPG II application programs. The RPG II Platform is a prerequisite for the RPG II Toolkit. PLANNED ENHANCEMENTS To assist customers in their planning, IBM plans to provide the following enhancements to the PS/2 RPG II Application Platform and Toolkit. o Support for the IBM Token Ring and IBM Network connectivity. o Support for PS/2 LAN workstation running under DOS or OS/2. EDUCATION SUPPORT No new technical education is planned for the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform or the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit. However, IBM courses exist for RPG II, System/36, Operation Control Language (OCL), Data File Utility (DFU), Sort Utility (SORT), and Operating System/2 (OS/2). TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: o An IBM Personal System/2 capable of running the OS/2 Standard Edition 1.0 or OS/2 Extended Edition 1.0. o The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform and/or the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit require a minimum of one (1) megabyte of main memory in addition to the memory requirements of the selected Operating System. To support the maximum configuration of eight (8) users, 2.5 megabytes of main memory is required in addition to the selected Operating System requirements. Note that the RPG II Platform is a prerequisite for the RPG II Toolkit. o The IBM Personal System/2, Model 50 and above, requires six (6) megabytes of disk storage for the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform and two (2) megabytes of disk storage for the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit, in addition to the disk storage requirements of the selected Operating System. o An IBM Personal System/2 display, all models. o An IBM Personal System/2 Dual Async Adapter/A or an IBM Realtime Interface Co-Processor Multiport/2 Adapter, if it is desired that more than one IBM 3151 ASCII Display or independent workstation be attached. o If an IBM 3151 ASCII Display, Model 310/410 or 360/460, is attached to the IBM Personal System/2 it must have the IBM 3151 Cartridge for Multiuser System Attachment feature. o The following may be attached as independent workstations (IW): - IBM Personal System/2, all models, with an IBM Enhanced Keyboard - IBM PC/AT, Model 339, with an IBM Enhanced Keyboard - IBM PC/XT, Model 286, with an IBM Enhanced Keyboard o An IBM Proprinter, all models. Note that full Code Page 850 support is not available on all Proprinters. Please review specific printer requirements. o The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform provides "Proprinter Compatible Processing" for the IBM 4224 Printer, Model 3XX. It may be serially connected only, via the PS/2 Serial port or the IBM Dual Async Adapter/A. It is identified to the PS/2-OS/2 system as COM1. Note that the IBM 4224 Printer is not fully supported functionally as a printer by either the IBM Personal System/2 or the IBM Operating System/2. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS These Conditions of Use programs are designed to work with OS/2 Standard and Extended Editions, Versions 1.0. LIMITATIONS The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform and the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit are designed to support up to eight users, in addition to the system console, on an IBM Personal System/2 capable of running OS/2 Standard Edition 1.0, or OS/2 Extended Edition 1.0. With a maximum eight users attached to the system, 2.5 megabytes of main memory is required by the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform in addition to the main memory requirements of the selected Operating System. RPG II Communications are not supported. The total system workload will limit the practical number of terminals and speed of each terminal. Careful planning and consideration should be taken to ensure that the PS/2 selected adequately meets the user's requirements for growth, number of terminals, and response time and performance, given a potential limitation in disk storage, available slots for communications and memory, and system requirements for the planned application. PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS The response time and performance of applications running under the RPG II Application Platform in a multiuser environment will depend on factors such as processor speed, line speeds, the number, type and organization of terminals, and the amount of processing done by the application program. The end user assumes the responsibility of verifying that the intended applications meet the end user's performance requirements given the planned number of concurrent users. MIGRATION/CONVERSION None PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: IBM Conditions of Use also apply to Dual Media packages; thus the program in a package may only be used on a single machine at any one time, even though the program may be provided in the package on two different sized media. If a customer wishes to use an IBM Conditions of Use program concurrently on more than one machine at a time, irrespective of the size of the medium, he must acquire that number of program packages equal to the number of concurrent users of the program. o The IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Platform and the IBM Personal System/2 RPG II Application Toolkit are designated as customer setup. Installation instructions are included with the program package. o Cable Requirements: The cable requirements are the customer's responsibility. Cable requirements are clearly outlined in the Installation and Using the IBM Personal System/2 RPGII Application Platform publication and should be checked closely to insure that the correct requirements are met for the attachment of various types of terminals.
