Description Business Solutions: IBM Data Interpretation System's LAN based architecture and end-user tools let individuals and work groups exchange applications and collaborate on analyzing and presenting information. Because the IBM Data Interpretation System's user interface is based upon familiar office objects and graphical depiction, end users can easily create, modify, and distribute applications. IBM Data Interpretation System's fast and flexible data access functions allow the user to: Run a Capsule application which combines analysis and presentation of data. Easily modify an existing Capsule application for different products, markets, or other variables. Create ad-hoc queries using graphical depictions of the IBM Data Interpretation System data dictionary for better analysis and decision making. Access host applications and data interactively using Distributed Application Services for additional host processing and analysis. Distributed Application Services can be used to run existing applications, develop new cooperative processing applications, and to access and manipulate host data including non-relational formats. Data may be located in multiple databases and on multiple systems. IBM Data Interpretation System provides a single consistent appearance for the professional while its own LAN services directs the data request to the appropriate host. Once the data is retrieved, it can be analyzed, presented and communicated with the integrated IBM Data Interpretation System tool set. Because IBM Data Interpretation System combines a graphical, object-oriented interface and tightly integrates various business professional tools, it is a total business solution for data-reliant professionals. User Productivity: The IBM Data Interpretation System increases business professionals' productivity and effectiveness. The interface represents individual functions and applications as icons on a personalized electronic desktop where each user can use them individually or put them in file drawers to be shared with others. The IBM Data Interpretation System: Reduces time for users to access information. Provides timely creation of reusable applications. Empowers users with access to data and the tools to interpret the data. Enables distribution and sharing of formatted information (memos and applications). IBM Data Interpretation System workstation tools help increase productivity by encouraging end user participation in all phases of application creation. The data flow from task to task is represented graphically, therefore, individual tasks can more easily be solved and built into a complete application icon. When specialized data handling and analysis procedures are required, transformer icons are available for statistical analysis, data conversion, and data manipulation. Transformer icons can also be included to call functions written in BASIC or C language. BASIC programs can also be called within spreadsheet cells. Entire applications, including any array of icons within it, can be mailed to other users, rather than having to be recreated. The syntax-free approach to application creation, coupled with the independence from database storage formats, help make applications readily convertible from one database to another. These IBM Data Interpretation System capabilities enhance end user productivity by improving availability and access to data, sharing of applications, and enabling personal computing. System Management: IBM Data Interpretation System provides system management functions including: Centralized LAN filing system with controls for restricting of shared access. A graphical interface for system and database administration. Consistent Database Administration (DBA) tools and commands over multiple relational databases using IBM Data Interpretation System data dictionary. Object-oriented access and authorization for administration and security. Tape backup and restoration facilities. Database security based on user name and password. Communication logging and statistics. Provide system integrity while supporting management of a shared environment. Host Distributed Application Services security based upon user name and password. An IBM Data Interpretation System data dictionary may be managed using the graphical DBA tool. The DBA can use a single workstation on any interconnected LAN to manage tables from multiple connected hosts and databases. Investment Protection: Users and applications running on previous IBM or Metaphor Computer Systems Data Interpretation System releases will easily migrate to IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3. In addition, Metaphor hardware will interoperate on an Ethernet LAN with IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3. Users may install distributed work group solutions with IBM 80386/80486 PS/2s as the hardware base in a Token Ring or Ethernet LAN environment. Applications created by IBM Data Interpretation System can access data stored in System Application Architecture(TM) (SAA(TM)) relational databases SQL/DS(TM), DB2(TM), OS/400(R) SQL, and the OS/2(R) Database Service. The communications server uses OS/2 EE communications support based upon SNA LU 6.2. All of these facilities are industry recognized. The IBM Data Interpretation System also provides Inter-Network Routing (INR) support to a Metaphor system running under an Ethernet LAN. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Growth Enablement: IBM Data Interpretation System's distributed LAN-server architecture, based on the PS/2, supports various sizes of work groups and provides flexibility in accommodating growth and balancing performance, including: Multiple work groups sending mail and applications and sharing database access facilities via connecting LANs and using internetwork routing described below. One or more database hosts that may be connected to a network of LANs A System Network Architecture (SNA) backbone network that can be used to connect multiple LANs and hosts. Up to seven secondary file servers that may be added to expand the file system capability on each LAN by ordering the applicable number of additional cost services. Use of multiple print servers and communication servers. Use of multiple database and mail gateways. Adapting IBM Data Interpretation System to the work group's physical location using communication servers to connect multiple geographically dispersed IBM Data Interpretation System LANs. A capability called internetworking permits a workstation on one IBM Data Interpretation System LAN to transparently use data base and communication services on any other IBM Data Interpretation System LAN. The internetworked LANs can be any combination of IBM Token-Ring or Ethernets LANs. Technical Information Specified Operating Environment Machine Requirements New Functions Distributed Application Services - MVS - Allows an IBM Data Interpretation System user to access an MVS/ESA or MVS/XA mainframe application and run TSO/E applications from the Data Interpretation System desktop or within a Capsule application. The host application must be non-interactive (run without terminal I/O). The user can pass parameters and data to the host and retrieve results and messages on the IBM Data Interpretation System desktop. Access to mainframe databases will be available to the TSO/E application. Upon receipt of the mainframe results, the IBM Data Interpretation System Capsule application may perform additional analysis and produce plots, spreadsheets, and reports as desired. Access to the TSO/E applications is achieved via customer-written programs or scripts. These scripts must be written in a procedural language (e.g. REXX) supported by the required version of TSO/E. Distributed Application Services can be used to run existing applications, develop new cooperative processing applications, and to access and manipulate host data including non-relational formats. Distributed Application Services - VM - Allows an IBM Data Interpretation System user to access a VM/SP, VM/HPO or VM/ESA mainframe application. The user can pass parameters and data to the host application and retrieve results and messages on the Data Interpretation System desktop. Access to mainframe databases will be available to the VM application. Upon receipt of the mainframe results, the Data Interpretation System Capsule application may perform additional analysis and produce plots, spreadsheets, and reports as desired. Access to the VM applications is achieved via customer-written programs or scripts. These scripts must be written in a procedural language supported by CMS (at the required VM version). Distributed Application Services can be used to run existing applications, develop new cooperative processing applications, and to access and manipulate host data including non-relational formats. SQL Database Support on AS/400 - Allows direct access to SQL relational database data, enabling AS/400 customers to use the IBM Data Interpretation System as their decision support solution. Each user request for database access is passed from the requestor's workstation to an OS/400 SQL Data Access Services gateway. The database gateway relays the request to the appropriate communications server, which passes it to the AS/400 host using APPC protocol. The workstation, database gateway and communications server reside on a token ring or Ethernet LAN. DOS Windows Support (Suspend/Resume) - Permits Data Interpretation System to be invoked from DOS Windows 3.0 in real or standard mode. On a PS/2 running Windows 3.0, you start the IBM Data Interpretation System by selecting its icon from an ordinary startup window. The IBM Data Interpretation System workstation software then takes full control of the PS/2 until you close the desktop, exit IBM Data Interpretation System and return to the Windows environment. However, even while the IBM Data Interpretation System has full control it provides an icon-based interface to IBM DOS files. DOS Windows Support (Terminate/Restart) - Permits the IBM Data Interpretation System to be invoked from DOS Windows 3.0 in 386 enhanced mode. If Windows is running in "386 enhanced" mode, starting the IBM Data Interpretation System terminates any active Windows applications. In "real" or "standard" mode, starting the IBM Data Interpretation System just suspends other Windows applications. Novell Support (Suspend/Resume) - You can start the IBM Data Interpretation System on a PS/2 that is running IBM DOS (Version 3.30 or later) by entering a simple command. If that PS/2 is also connected to a token-ring LAN and is running Novell NetWare (5) 386 (Version 3.1 or later), that PS/2 can maintain network access to a NetWare server while the IBM Data Interpretation System is in use. Such access is not permitted on an Ethernet LAN. Communication Services Installability - SAA Networking Services/2, simplifies the installation process of a Data Interpretation System communications server for APPC and APPN under OS/2EE. Console Backup Password - Adds a separate password for the backup function. This creates a second level of authorization and allows system access strictly for backup purposes without enabling other System Administrator functions. Host Client for VM DCSS Support - Enables the VM Host Client modules to be installed in a CMS Discontiguous Shared Segment (DCSS). The programs in this DCSS can then be shared by all Host Client virtual machines, resulting in improved main storage utilization, and reduced paging. Host Client for MVS Enhancements - Pre and post SQL processing exits are added to enable additional customization.A user configuration option causes the DB2 clients to set the current SQL ID to the user name in the icon. This supports the additional connection options presented by host knowledge of the desktop name and LAN name. All host client control blocks in CSA have been moved to Extended CSA. Product Enhancements IBM Data Interpretation System Version 1.3 incorporates several significant enhancements. These enhancements include improvements to existing functions as well as the addition of new functions. Enhancements To Existing Functions Reporter Capture SQL Log Button - Allows the user to create an SQL log when running Reporter. When the user selects the 'Start Capture' button on the Reporter auxiliary menu, a reporter log icon will be created, placed on the desktop, and opened. When the user selects 'Show Data' in the Reporter, a copy of the SQL associated with the request will be logged. Each time 'Show Data' is selected, the new SQL is appended to the old. The user can stop the capture processing by closing the log. Closing the Reporter will also close the log. Heading Information Displays - Displays the heading's print name, internal name, and type/description for reference in the heading options window when a heading is renamed. Template Indication for Hidden Headings - Provides an indication using a dotted box in the template whenever a heading has been hidden. Automatic Data Aggregation - Improves memory usage and enables a new class of applications, providing simple cross-tabulation capabilities in reports. Suppression of N / A and Aggregation Messages on Reports - When N / As are encountered during computation, an N / A message is generated. Also, if aggregated facts are present in the report, a warning message is generated. The user may now select whether either or both warning messages are displayed or suppressed on the report. Sort Dimension Headings by User Preference - Permits sorting in order of a user's constraint list (for example, geographically). Support @ Variables as Constants - Permits the user to specify a constant as either a number or an @ variable in calculations when used in Capsules. Update Category Button - Allows the user to re-read the category from the Workstation Tools Data Dictionary (WTDD) even if the Database Administrator (DBA) has not updated the WT Versions table. Hide Headings Without Hiding Subheadings - Allows the user to suppress a specific heading without suppressing its subheadings. This will facilitate the creation of reports that use a Sort Sequence, without actually having to display the sequence information. Report Builder Format Transfer for Plot and Spreadsheet II - Allows reports to be transfered to other tools (such as Plot, Spreadsheet II) in formats different from the formats displayed and printed by Report Builder.Enables more flexible use of Report Builder in Capsules. Sort by User Preference - Permits sorting in order of a user's constraint list (for example, geographically). This will allow users to create customized and simplified reports. Sort by External Document - permits sorting in the order that items appear in a text document. Document can be centrally located and shared. Global constraint choices - Provides a Show All Choices button in the Constraint Options Window to allow the user to display all choices for a column. Forms Design/Data Entry Tool Multi-Section Form Validation - Provides a new choice parameter which allows entry and validation of data on forms containing multiple sections. This allows support for forms that do not fit on a single display window. SQL Constraint Building Flexibility - Enhanced to improve construction of constraints for browse lists or post-entry SQL that may involve multiple data items. Data Validation Frequencies - Provides choice between two types of field data validation; 'Always' causes validation every time the user presses 'Enter'; 'If Changed' causes validation when the user presses 'Enter' only if the field changed since it was opened or last validated. This improves the performance of data entry icons. Component Value Validation - Allows the forms designer to specify whether a field accepts single or multiple values. This will improve the handling of field values consisting of multiple data items in Update and Enter forms. Browse Update - Provides the ability to automatically update browse lists only when the browsed tables have changed, thereby improving the performance of the Data Entry tool. Capsule Reference Capsule - Enables creation of reference Capsules containing frequently-used routines to be shared by many users. This reduces file storage space requirements for a Capsule used by multiple users and provides a centralized reference Capsule application library. Placeholder Icon - Speeds Capsule development by allowing an icon inside a Capsule application to be removed, updated, and replaced without losing the connections to other icons in the Capsule application. DBA - enhanced to allow OS/400 SQL data access on AS/400. SPP (Sequence Packet Protocol) and Source-Routing Performance - Improves efficiency of Data Interpretation System routing algorithm, improves response of Data Interpretation System to heavy traffic situations and adds capability for Data Interpretation System automatically to adjust the routing information when bridges go off line. 3270 Emulation Icon Keyboard Mapping - Changes the keyboard mapping schema for the 3270 emulation icon to improve usability. DB2 Security - Enables passing of the desktop name (user ID) and the network ID to the mainframe host,in addition to the user name and password. Host security administrators can use this information to manage access to host databases. Compressed Screen Capture - Allows the Screen Capture Icon to compress screen images it represents. However, printing overhead can adversely affect File Service performance. In configurations with large printing requirements and/or critical response time requirements, one or more separate Print Services on separate servers is recommended (the desired number of Additional Print Services must be ordered as an additional charge function). Optionally, up to seven additional Secondary File Services may be attached to the configuration (this is done by ordering the desired number of extra charge Secondary File Services). The Secondary File Services does not require the IBM 6157 Tape Drive or adapter. However, the attachment of an IBM 6157 Tape Drive is recommended to improve performance and flexibility of backup operations. The number of physical file services and total DASD space required is related to the capacity and performance expectations of the configuration. The IBM Data Interpretation System Primary and Secondary File Servers will support a maximum of three physical disk drives. Any Primary or Secondary File Server may contain one, two, or three disk drives for use by Data Interpretation System. Disk drive types ESDI and SCSI can be mixed in any combination for a total of three drives, but, due to PS/2 hardware restrictions, no more than two of the drives can be ESDI. Print Services requires a PS/2 model 55SX, 65SX, 70, 80, 90, or 95 with the following minimum features: Minimum memory required is as much as is available on the largest workstation that the print server will support. 16/4 Mbit Token Ring adapter(#1133) or 3COM Etherlink/MC adapter (3C523) 8503 display (8503-001) Enhanced keyboard The IBM Data Interpretation System's Mail Gateway and Database Gateway Servers (SQL/DS, DB2 and OS/400 SQL Data Access Services) consist of a PS/2 model 55SX, 65SX, 70, 80, 90, or 95 with the following minimum features: 4 MBytes of memory 16/4 MBit Token Ring adapter (#1133) or 3COM Etherlink/MC adapter (3C523) 8503 display (8503-001) Enhanced keyboard SQL/DS, DB2, and OS/400 SQL Data Access Services Gateways and Mail Gateway functions can be combined in the same physical server, within hardware limits. The following displays currently satisfy this criterion: 8507 display (8507-001) 8512 display (8512-001) 8513 display (8513-001) 8514 display (8514-001) 8515 display (8515-001) 8604 display (8604-001) As additional testing of run-under support for new hardware and software is completed, support information will be available. Contact your IBM marketing representative. LAN Configurations A complete IBM Data Interpretation System configuration for access to a DB2, SQL/DS, or OS/400 SQL database must contain File, Mail, Print, Communications Service, and Database Gateway functions, and one or more workstations with one Complete Workstation Tool Set. Within hardware and performance limitations, the File, Mail, and Print Service functions may be combined in a single PS/2 processor. SQL/DS, DB2, and OS/400 SQL Data Access Services Gateways and Mail Gateway functions may also be combined in a single processor. The Communications Service code runs as an OS/2 Extended Edition (EE) 1.3 application and cannot co-reside in the same processor as other IBM Data Interpretation System services. Larger configurations can separate Print, Mail Gateway, and Database Gateway functions to individual PS/2s. At least one Streaming Tape Drive and adapter (attached to the File Service) are required. A complete LAN configuration for access to an OS/2 Relational Database must contain File, Mail, Print, OS/2 Database Service functions and one or more workstations. No Communication Service is needed unless mail or queries to and from other LANs or a System 370/390 host are going to be used. A "satellite" IBM Data Interpretation System (containing one or more workstations, a combined File, Print, and Mail Service, and a Communications Service) can connect to a complete IBM Data Interpretation System via the Communications Service Internetwork Routing function and access the Database Gateway and other resources of the complete system. Distributed Application Services requires a separate gateway on the LAN to act as an intermediary between a mainframe host and the IBM Data Interpretation System workstations. The gateway requires a Token Ring 16/4 adapter or 3COM 3C523 Etherlink/MC adapter, depending on the LAN topology, and can optionally be linked to the host via an IBM PS/2 multi-protocol adapter for SDLC communications. Interoperability IBM Data Interpretation System Version 1 Release 3 running in an Ethernet LAN environment will allow the attachment of Metaphor Computer System's Workstation IIs and Workstation 2XPs as well as other selected hardware and software combinations. Ethernet support also includes interoperability with selected hardware and licensed software from Metaphor Computer Systems. IBM Data Interpretation System Version 1 Release 3 will allow the customer to combine on a single Ethernet LAN Metaphor hardware and IBM products. IBM Data Interpretation Systems running on either a Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN will continue to support internetwork routing (INR) between connected Metaphor Computer Data Interpretation Systems. Compatibility between Metaphor Release 11 and IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 has the same limitations as compatibility between IBM Data Interpretation System V1.2 and IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3. Please refer to the section entitled "Software Requirements, IBM Data Interpretation System LAN Requirements, Compatibility" for details. IBM Data Interpretation System Host Client (5706-113) IBM Data Interpretation System Host Client is designed to operate on any IBM System 370/390 running a VM or MVS system satisfying requirements listed under the Software Requirements section of this document. Host Client SQL/DS requires one 2 MByte virtual machine for each client operator and one 2 MByte virtual machine for each client server (does not include storage for VM Host Client modules installed in a CMS Discontiguous Shared Segment (DCSS)). Host Client PROFS/VM Notes or OfficeVision/VM Notes requires 2 MBytes virtual storage for each mail gateway connected to the host. Host Client Distributed Application Services MVS has the same storage requirements as Host Client DB2. In addition, Distributed Application Services requires virtual storage for the user's application. Host Client Distributed Application Services VM has the same storage requirements as Host Client SQL/DS. DB2 Security requires approximately 50 bytes per user in Extended Common Storage Area (CSA). Host Client DB2 requires the following storage estimates. Common Storage Area - Approximately 10K bytes of CSA plus an additional 75 bytes for each client address space is required. Control Address Space - 2 MBytes of private virtual storage. The programs and data comprise approximately 1 MByte and can run above the 16 MByte line. The run time libraries must run below the 16 MByte line. Client Address Space - Each client address space requires 3 MBytes of private virtual storage; 1 MByte below the 16 MByte line for run-time libraries and data areas and 2 MBytes above the line for programs and data. Link Pack Area (LPA) Requirements - Approximately 15K bytes of Extended LPA is required for subsystem code, a supervisor call and the connect exit. Client address space programs may optionally be loaded into the Extended LPA to improve the real storage utilization. This reduces the client address space private virtual storage requirement. OS/400 SQL Data Access Services (5696-182) IBM Data Interpretation System Host Client OS/400 SQL Data Access Services is designed to operate on an AS/400 satisfying requirements listed under the Software Requirements section of this document. This facility performs a similar function for the AS/400 system that Host Client Database Services performs for an MVS and VM system. The OS/400 Host Client consists of a Control component and multiple Client components. Each Client component services OS/400 database requests from one workstation user (icon) at a time. Communications between the OS/400 Host Client and the LAN based OS/400 SQL Data Access Services Gateway are handled by a Data Interpretation System Communications Server using the Advanced Program to Program Communication (APPC) protocol. The AS/400 host system requires OS/400 Version 1 Release 3 or Version 2 Release 1 for an operating system. Host Client OS/400 SQL Data Access Services requires 5.5 MBytes for the base Host Client code plus 100K per gateway and 300K per client component. The AS/400 uses either System Data Link Control (SDLC) or token ring as its host connection. The OS/400 SQL Data Access Services requires a Data Interpretation System Communications Server, even if the AS/400 is on the local Ethernet or Token Ring LAN. The AS/400 System Units and models supported are: Machine Type 9404 Models C20, C25, D20, and D25 Machine Type 9406 Models B35, B45, B50, B60, B70, D35, D45, D50, D60, D70, and D80 Software Requirements The IBM Data Interpretation System has the software requirements listed below. Compatibility IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 is fully upward compatible from IBM Data Interpretation System V1.2 and Metaphor Release 11. Backward compatibility is limited in the following ways: Because of tool backing file changes, some icons created on an IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 network will not open on networks running earlier versions of IBM Data Interpretation System software. These are Reporter, Report Builder, Forms Design, Data Entry, and Screen Capture icons. All other icons are interchangeable between IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 and IBM Data Interpretation System V1.2/Metaphor Release 11. Facilities introduced in IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 will not operate in earlier versions. For example, a Distributed Access Service Transformer program will not run on a pre-IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 network. Host Client software is compatible in both directions. For example, IBM Data Interpretation System V1.2 data access tools can retrieve data from a host running IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 software, and IBM Data Interpretation System V1.3 tools can retrieve data from an IBM Data Interpretation System V1.2 host. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities The customer must provide the minimum hardware and software environment for operation, and is responsible for program setup, operation, and implementation of backup procedures. In general, it is advised that the customer assign one or two workgroup members to serve as system administrator and a database administrator. Individuals should be selected, who are knowledgeable in data processing networking concepts and terminology. These individuals should be responsible for tailoring IBM Data Interpretation System to the customer's planned environments. This may include such tasks as the writing of exit routines to handle specialized security requirements. Problem determination and problem source identification are licensee (customer) responsibilities. Location and Organization Providing Support - EMEA The following items summarize the service and support strategy for the IBM Data Interpretation System. The Country Support Organizations (CSO) will provide initial Level 1 contact and technical support. The boot strap program is required to initiate the communications between the workstation and file server during the initial installation process. The Host Client product is available for shipment on 9/1600 bpi tape or 9/6250 bpi tape or 3480 cartridge or 1/4 inch tape luge (VM only). Host OS/400 Services are ordered when the OS/400 SQL Data Access Services have been specified. Detailed information is contained in the "Ordering" section of this announcement. Security, Auditability, and Control Access to data from the IBM Data Interpretation System product is controlled by two separate mechanisms. Access to data within the IBM Data Interpretation System filing system is implemented by the File Service and administered by the system administrator and workstation user. Access to relational data is implemented by the relational database management system and administered by the database administrator. Desktops Each user's desktop is created with an associated password. Desktops can be designated as belonging to one or more access groups. Several password management features are available. Icons When created, icons are designated with the userid of the icon creator. Icons on a user's desktop cannot be seen or accessed by other users. Access privileges may be set for an icon to control read or write access to the icon by the owner or when the icon is in a shared location such as a file drawer, by groups of users or all users. Icon access can also be set to inherit access characteristics for the container icon in which it resides. Relational Data Access to relational data can be controlled by user or database access icons constraints and relational database management facilities. Database access icons can be configured with a database name, database (or desktop) user name, and password. In addition, the desktop and network name are passed to the host for optional use by the customizable security exit. The database administrator may control access to relational data by use of facilities of the database management system. Host Distributed Application Services security based upon user name and password User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Asset Management Software Configuration has been improved. The new routine significantly minimizes customer concern regarding potential legal exposure due to unauthorized copying of software. Customers will also know that the software inventory is accurate for the Data Interpretation System environment. This product-embedded asset management routine provides controlled distribution of product features from the primary file server to other PS/2s on the same logical LAN. The routine is designed to provide both control and flexibility. It ensures that the installable limit of each feature is consistent with the customer order, while also allowing the limits to be expanded for up to fourteen (14) days (i.e. the "grace period"). The "grace period" is invoked by entering a simple command and when reconfiguring the LAN. If the 14-day grace period expires without installing a new installation file, the system will automatically revert to the "pre-grace period" status, and the "grace period" configuration will no longer be available. IBM will provide the needed installation file for each initial customer order and for each subsequent order. Information on this process will be provided in the software program directory (delivered with the product from IBM's Software and Publications Distribution Centre). The file contains: a network registration id (LAN ID), a timestamp, the name of each feature ordered and the corresponding quantity and a verification number (checksum number). The installation file can be transmitted to the customer in the following ways: electronically or by telephone, FAX, or IBM Electronic Mail System (e.g. PROFS, OV/VM, etc.). Please review this with your customer(s). When customers have received the Data Interpretation System software, the customer should contact the IBM Software and Publications Distribution Centre, in Copenhagen, to ensure that customers will receive the appropriate installation file and (if desired) will request an IBM provided LAN Identification Number. Customers will be asked to provide pertinent information to support the installation. Subsequently, customers will need to provide this information, for verification purposes, when upgrading the configuration. The customer should provide a customer contact name, customer location address, customer commercial telephone number, the IBM contact name, IBM address, and IBM local commercial telephone number, plus any additional data required to identify the order (and verify it within the IBM Advanced Administrative System (AAS)) and the preferred method of contact the customer wishes to utilize in the future (FAX, telephone, through IBM, etc.) The procedures for upgrading a previously installed IBM Data Interpretation System and also obtaining an upgraded software installation file will be the same as for the initial ordering procedure stated above. Any adjustments to the above procedures will be documented in the software program directory delivered with the product. Assignment of unique LAN ID: Each Data Interpretation System LAN must be assigned a LAN ID to identify it for communication purposes. If LANs having the same LAN ID attempt to communicate, Data Interpretation System will not work. Therefore, IBM strongly urges the assignment of a LAN ID that is unique among all customers. IBM will provide a unique LAN ID when contacted for the Data Interpretation Installation File, if you so choose. The benefits of such an assignment include: Enabled LAN-to-LAN communication among Data Interpretation System LANs worldwide Simplified Systems Management and Administration Effective Data Interpretation System Asset Management Improved Configuration Management and Problem Identification IBM suggests that even stand-alone LANs be assigned a unique LAN ID in anticipation of possible future LAN-to-LAN communication. Assignment of unique Data Interpretation System LAN IDs is performed by IBM Software & Publication Distribution (SPC). Detailed instruction on how to obtain the LAN ID will be provided with the software delivery. Ordering Information Consult your IBM Marketing Representative. Current users must reorder this update.
