TEMPESTed
Provided by the ASK Keyboard Dictionary
TEMPEST is a NATO-recognised U.S. National Security Agency specification regarding protecting against spying with electronic equipment. If a keyboard is said to be TEMPESTed, it means it has been created or modified for TEMPEST usage and designed to not radiate electromagnetic emanations to counter Van Eck phreaking. IBM did not design entirely new TEMPESTed keyboards though, instead opting to modify existing ones by usually giving their controller cards clay or metal shielding and perhaps changing their cables' plugs from a DIN-style plug to a DE-9 plug. Known IBM TEMPESTed keyboards include the IBM EMR Keyboard I, IBM EMR Keyboard II, IBM TPC Keyboard I, IBM TPC Keyboard II, IBM TPC Keyboard III, IBM TPC Keyboard IV and IBM Enhanced Personal Computer Keyboard T.
